Conclusion 111 Bibliography 117 FOREWORD It is the aim of this thesis to present the findings of a study of the educational development, of Northampton, Massachusetts from the colonial period to the present, 1663 - 1940. The term "education* is used in the broadest sense, to inolude the work of both public and private schools, from elementary grades through secondary schools to the College. It may thus be possible to gain from this local study of the educational conditions of one of Massachusetts* oldest towns, a better understanding of the whole set-up of education in this country.
