The Amityville Horror, by Jay Anson. Prentice-Hall, Englewood Cliffs, N.J., 1977. 201 pages, $7.95. Reviewed by Robert L. Morris This book claims to be the true account of a month of terrifying "paranormal" events that occurred to a Long Island family when they moved into a house in Amityville, New York, that had been the scene of a mass murder. Throughout the book there are strong suggestions that the events were demonic in origin. On the copyright page, the Library of Congress subject listings are "1. Demon- ology—Case studies. 2. Psychical research—United States—Case studies." The next page contains the following statement: "The names of several individuals mentioned in this book have been changed to protect their privacy. However, all facts and events, as far as we have been able to verify them, are strictly accurate." The front cover of the book's dust jacket contains the words: "A True Story." A close reading, plus a knowledge of details that later emerged, suggests that this book would be more appropriately indexed under "Fiction—Fantasy and horror." In fact it is almost a textbook illustration of bad investigative jour- nalism, made especially onerous by its potential to terrify and mislead people and to serve as a form of religious propaganda. To explore this in detail, we first need an outline of the events that supposed- ly took place, as described in the text of the book, plus a prologue derived from a segment of a New York television show about the case. On November 13, 1974, Ronald DeFeo shot to death six members of his family at their home in Amityville.

  • Cinemeducation Movies Have Long Been Utilized to Highlight Varied
Cinemeducation Movies have long been utilized to highlight varied areas in the field of psychiatry, including the role of the psychiatrist, issues in medical ethics, and the stigma toward people with mental illness. Furthermore, courses designed to teach psychopathology to trainees have traditionally used examples from art and literature to emphasize major teaching points. The integration of creative methods to teach psychiatry residents is essential as course directors are met with the challenge of captivating trainees with increasing demands on time and resources. Teachers must continue to strive to create learning environments that give residents opportunities to apply, analyze, synthesize, and evaluate information (1). To reach this goal, the use of film for teaching may have advantages over traditional didactics. Films are efficient, as they present a controlled patient scenario that can be used repeatedly from year to year. Psychiatry residency curricula that have incorporated viewing contemporary films were found to be useful and enjoyable pertaining to the field of psychiatry in general (2) as well as specific issues within psychiatry, such as acculturation (3). The construction of a formal movie club has also been shown to be a novel way to teach psychiatry residents various aspects of psychiatry (4). Introducing REDRUMTM Building on Kalra et al. (4), we created REDRUMTM (Reviewing [Mental] Disorders with a Reverent Understanding of the Macabre), a Psychopathology curriculum for PGY-1 and -2 residents at Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. REDRUMTM teaches topics in mental illnesses by use of the horror genre. We chose this genre in part because of its immense popularity; the tropes that are portrayed resonate with people at an unconscious level.

Melvin Harris, a researcher and broadcaster for the BBC, has written a fascinating expose of long-lived "psychic mysteries." Investigating the Unexplained examines many claims made by the proponents of the paranormal. Harris' work led him into the worlds of ghosts and demons, haunted houses, and spirit mediums. He checked up on reports of reincarnation, poltergeists, a mummy's curse, and eyewitness accounts of "little green children."This book gives us the real facts behind the famous Amityville Horror hoax, the hypnotic regressions to past lives recorded on the much-publicized Bloxham tapes, the "psychic detectives" involved in the search for Jack the Ripper, and many other "fully authenticated" but incredible tales.Harris went back to the primary sources of these stories and found he was always able to say, "Sorry, you've been duped!" For every legend he debunks, Harris present the facts. He shows us how and why a hoax was perpetrated. Often the public grasps on to someone else's story and, before long, these tales are mythologized and believed to be truths. B L O O M TTHHEE AAMMIITTYYVVIILLLLEE HHOORRRROORR Directed by Stuart Rosenberg Produced by Elliot Geisinger and Ronald Saland Distributed by American International Pictures Released in 1979 irst of all, just because a story is based on a true-life event, that doesn't mean there can't be F alterations. And if some are inevitable, drop the true-to-life spin-doctoring and tell a great story inspired by real life. The Amityville Horror keeps the one element of the real-life story that most disappoints— the Lutzes' departure. Something far more spectacular would be preferable. The climax involves George going back to rescue the family dog (and some of the greatest dread generated by the story involves worries of what's going to befall that dog [which is an indictment of the paucity of sympathetic human characters]). George falls into the Hell portal and the dog attacks him before realizing that this unrecognizable blob is his master. George emerges from the house with the dog. That's it. Wouldn't it have been more satisfying if the little girl who is friendly with the spirits had to die in order to break the curse, and George is the one to do it since he's got an axe and he's not her father? (This might feel too much like The Omen , though.) Another possibility, hinted at when Kathy asks her daughter what "Jody" has been saying, is that the daughter could be fooled into divulging critical information that could be used to destroy the spirits.

  • The Determinants of Box Office Revenue for Horror Movies
The Determinants of Box Office Revenue for Horror Movies Neil Terry, West Texas A&M University, USA Robert King, West Texas A&M University, USA Jeri J. Walker, West Texas A&M University, USA ABSTRACT This paper examines the domestic box office revenue determinants of movies from the horror genre. The sample consists of 225 films released during 1978-2010. Regression results indicate the primary determinants of box office revenue for horror movies are number of theatres showing the movie during the opening weekend of release, critical rating, sequels, restricted rating, production budget, and theme. Specific results include the observation that within the horror movie genre the slasher theme adds approximately fifteen million to domestic box office revenue, while the zombie theme stalls at the box office with earnings totaling as much as twenty-one million less than other movies in the genre. Nudity, vampire theme, comedy theme, and holiday release dates are not statistically significant determinants. INTRODUCTION Since the first horror movie, Le Manoir Du Diable or The Haunted Castle, people have been drawn to a genre of film that is specifically designed to frighten and scare the viewer. Dracula is the second most portrayed character in film behind only Sherlock Holmes (Robertson, 2001). The 1897 publication of Bram Stoker’s Dracula in 1897 opened up the entire world’s mind to the idea of vampires and their lifestyles, which increasingly came to creative life once depicted on the big screen. Building on the success of vampire films, horror began branching into other realms such as monsters and ghosts.
