Box 1200 02015 HUT Finland Greetings from the General Secretary Hello IGSM! So… Welcome you all to IGSM2004, it is first time when we Finns have got this wonderful happening to arrange. This is also the first time in the whole Nordic Countries (which are Finland, Sweden, Denmark, Norway and Iceland) and I really hope that this IGSM is not going to be the last one in Finland or either in the Nordic Countries. But what was the history for this IGSM now? In 2001 in Newcastle some people asked or in fact we were almost forced to arrange IGSM already in 2003. But we didn’t know what to do, Newcastle was first IGSM for so many Finns that we decided not to take IGSM2003. But when IGSM2002 in Slovenia approached, we decided to take the next one for us! And show how we live, how we feel and what we can do! And now we are here. I can say that everything has been wonderful. It has been nice and very educational to arrange this year’s IGSM. But of course it has been also quit tiring. We started to organise the meeting so early that it must be tiring. But like I said: whole thing has been reward- ing. We really have enjoyed the arrangement. So that is why I can say on everybody’s behalf that hope to see you all smiling and you all will enjoy here, in our country, in Espoo and especially in IGSM2004! It is a great honour to arrange this meeting for you all surveyors. I hope that from now on it wouldn’t be anymore so hard to get next the IGSM to be arranged. Because it is dumb to fear the arrangement of IGSM. I hope that every school who will arrange IGSM in future would feel nice and especially could enjoy the arrangements! Welcome once more to Finland, I hope you will see and live much nice and new! Mika Eskelinen IGSO General Secretary 2 Greetings from the Head of the Department Dear IGSM delegates, It is my pleasure to welcome you to the Department of Surveying at the Helsinki University of Technology. I hope you enjoy the meeting and get good memories from Finland. The Department of Surveying at HUT is the only source of university level education of surveyors in Finland. Until 1972 the surveyor’s examination was almost the same for all students. All studied both mapping and land management. In 1972 the study system divided into classes was abandoned, and the students were allowed to take their majors and minors according to their own plans. Since then the tendency to specialisation has increased. In 1993 the Degree Programme was divided into two options to which the students were taken in directly: Surveying and Mapping Technology, and Property Economics and Law. The main reasons were that the tasks and know how in these options were quite different. By dividing the degree programme we could better concentrate on the most important knowledge in both fields. Our experiences were good and in 2000 we divided the Degree Programme of Surveying into two independent programmes with two options: Real Estate Economics (options Land Management and Law, and Real Estate Management) and Geomatics (options Geoinformatics and Surveying Engineering). The annual intake is now 40 for Geomatics and 50 for Real Estate Economics. The number of applicants is double the student places and the employment after graduation seems to be good. The number of professors in the Department of Surveying is eight. The number of master’s degrees annually taken has been about 40 and the number of doctor’s degrees about three (seven in 2003). Most of the lectures are still held in Finnish although in Geoinformatics they are in English. The PhD-studies are widely arranged in English in the whole Department. In 2005 the degrees are going to be reorganised according to the Bologna agreement, which means that the Bachelor and Master levels are taken into use. After that it is most likely that also the Master level can easily be studied in English in all of our subject areas. I hope I will meet you later as a student or teacher here in our Department. Kauko Viitanen Head of the Department of Surveying 3 Organising IGSM 2004 We started to plan IGSM 2004 after we came from Slovenia where we agreed to host it but the serious planning we started last fall. There are about 15 people in our main organising team who have been working really hard for the last 10 months to get everything ready for you. Ev- erybody in the organising team had different areas of responsibility. To manage our resources the most efficient way we divided our efforts to smaller groups. We had an excursion group, a lecture group, an accom- modation group, a webpage group, a T-shirt group, a sponsor group, a registration group, a logo group, just to name few. Many of us worked in several of the small groups. It is easier to pass ideas with four people instead of all fifteen. Of course every now and then we had meetings with the whole organising team where all the groups were telling what they had done. This is the reason of our changing titles in the webpage. There are also many other students who helped in and during the progress. One big decision that our organising team made was to lower the partici- pation fee from 100 to 80 euros. Reason for this decision was that Fin- land is the most remote country to host IGSM so far and we tought that more people would like to come here if the fee would be little bit lower than before. This way the more expensive traveling costs will not auto- matically raise the travel budjet so dramatically. Past years seniors have paid the same participation fee as students but this year we decided to raise seniors participation fee for 120 euros. We talked about this with some of the seniors and students last year and they tought that it would be justified to raise fee a litle bit for a seniors, because after all this is a student meeting. I am happy that many seniors decided to take part of the igsm this year despite the higher fee. At this point it seems that we will manage the whole meeting with a budget just under 22000 euros. Half of that we will get from the partici- pation fees. Other half we got mostly from different sponsors and the rest was thanks to excellent finansing in IGSM 2002 and IGSM 2003. I hope we will also have some money left after the meeting to pass on to Turkey, but right know I can´t say how much. It was not easy to get sponsors for the event. What we learned was that finding sponsors is really a hard work and you should start to contact them as soon as possible. Nearly all the students who wanted to partisipate in IGSM 2004 were accepted to enjoy the meeting. Some students could not attend this meeting because their visa applications were denied. We did our best to make it possible for all of these students to accompany the IGSM meet- ing. For example invitation letters were sent to all of the students who 4 requested it from us for various reasons and to certain countries we sent the letters of invitation directly to the Finnish consulate. Hopefully those who could not come this year will have better luck following years. I hope you all enjoy the meeting and your time in Finland Seija Vinblad, IGSO Treasurer Dresden is greeting Espoo! For those who haven't been there and the forgetfuls who have been there a short time warp back to last year: IGSM 2003 took place from 9th to 14th of June at the Dresden University of Technology. The meet- ing saw participants from 12 European countries coming together, listen- ing to lectures, going on field trips ranging in diversity from the Geo Research Centre Potsdam to a visit of a silver mine near Dresden. Most important of all, we as organisers and the participants had a good time learning to know each other, and finding out that we all are in many ways very much the same people, despite all national borders. Another inter- esting experience you will probably also share as well, was when the ordinary people we learnt to know during the days of the meeting ap- peared in their smartest outfits for the final banquet - quite amazing the difference in some cases ;-) Dresden's delegation to Espoo is unfortunately rather small this year, due to most of the organisers being in the final stages of their study. Still, we send you all the best wishes for days of learning and fun in Espoo - we are sure the 17th IGSM will be one of the best ever. To refresh your Dresden memories, take a look at the webpage www.igsm2003.de which contains a list of participants with email ad- dresses, selected lectures held on the meeting and finally some pictures of the meeting itself available for downloading.
