Our festival kicks off with the perfect new year gypsy cheekiness in the rustic Briars Barn.

Led with breathtaking virtuosity by Hungarian trained violinist Hope Csutoros (My Friend the Chocolate Cake) the trio features the dynamic piano accordion playing of Judy Gunson (formerly Cosmo Cosmolino) and the wonderful talents of Jo To on double bass.

The Stiletto Sisters perform with extraordinary emotional range from extreme delicacy to blazing intensity and more than a touch of humour. The velvety seduction of their 3-part harmonies on Latin, Yiddish and Hungarian love songs has caused many to faint with delight!

These works have long held a fascination for Peter, and he draws upon many years of meditations upon them to craft a truly captivating experience. Submission No. 104 26 Patrons Program & Donations

Peninsula Summer Music Festival relies on your generous donations to produce our special festival and year-round development work, celebrating fine music in all its forms.

DID YOU KNOW? Delivering the festival takes year-round planning and some events require even longer to plan.

Every year PSMF has to raise 80% of our budget ourselves through private donations and business sponsorship, as we receive very little Government funding.

For 13 years, PSMF has been able to provide the community with a range of programs and events throughout our festival. There are significant hard costs to produce events, and to keep these events and programs as accessible as possible.

We truly appreciate the generosity of so many sponsors and supporters, who often provide time, money and even help to spread the word. Your private and company contributions are vital to us, so we can continue to bring you this world-class festival.

WE NEED YOU! By becoming a PSMF 2020 Patron and Supporter you not only get the VIP treatment at our signature events but you also become part of our extended family. Our Patron Program is your opportunity to really show your passion for music and supporting musician, and to contribute to its future. Join a special group who understand the importance of intimate events and unique Peninsula Places – More Music for More People.

THE BENEFITS? Your tax-deductible donation will support our festival to deliver and to grow our connection to the Peninsula Community into the future.

2020 Festival Patrons also receive additional behind the scenes updates, an invitation to attend our 2020 Festival program launch in October and special invitations during the 2020 festival itself. All Patrons are signed up to our eNews and receive updates.

peninsulafestival.com.au Submission No. 104 Background/Overview

Peninsula Summer Music Festival is a not for profit organisation, founded in 2008 to deliver high quality professional chamber music performances around the Mornington Peninsula in January each year.

Making the most of the weather and high-visitation to the Peninsula each January, the Festival continues to feature Australian musicians who live overseas playing in the world’s leading ensembles and who are returning home at Christmas, while showcasing Australia-born, Australian-based or Australian-trained artists. Through this model, we present world-class performances locally and show-case the Mornington Peninsula.

The growing reputation of our Festival has meant that we have been able to attract high-profile International artists, while our programing continues to include accessible music that appeals to a wide demographic.

We showcase regional wines and produce, the local arts and cultural community, while promoting the Mornington Peninsula as a tourist destination. The quality of our program is reinforced through association with the finest local venues, collaborations and creative partnerships.

The objectives of our festival are simple: • To enrich the cultural and social life of the region offering affordable and accessible fine music • To engage our community with artists of renown in unique Mornington Peninsula places • To attract visitors to the region by partnering with the local business • To inspire and educate young musicians of the Mornington Peninsula

Our festival attracts an audience of all age groups and increasingly through local support we are able to offer free and community engagement events across the festival.

As a professional festival, we pride ourselves in attracting the highest quality musicians in the fields, and are increasing opportunities across genres including classical, baroque, world music, jazz, folk and electronic music.

FUTURE/STRAGEGY

The Peninsula Summer Music Festival has established itself as a institution across the 13 years of operation offering: “Intimate Performances; World- class music; Truly unique Peninsula Places.”

As a once a year event, we have traditionally operated from year to year, surviving on depleting funds and the good will of the community. It is expensive to develop and maintain a festival, continuing to attract the calibre of artists and sustain a level of professionalism even though a number of supporters contribute for ‘love’ not money.

Submission No. 104 Our long-term aim is to bring “More Music to More People”. Continuing to offer high quality professional music experiences for the local community. We aim to broaden our audience base by offering more low and no cost events. We aim to increase our engagement with the local community.

Historically, the festival has existed on ticket sales, private donations and small support from Council and local businesses such as Bendigo Bank for specific events held as part of the festival.

Each year we run at break even and do not have a sustainable and solid base to build on. The 2020 festival came extremely close to being cancelled due to lack of financial reserves, and only through the generosity of private donations was it able to continue. We respectfully request $28,013.00 (See attached budget table breakdown) to support our significant contribution to the Mornington Peninsula events and musical community.

In 2021 and beyond, PSMF is committed to building sustainable models of delivery of professional music and further develop the audience base for live classical, chamber and high quality music. Over the past 13 years, PSMF has established itself as an icon on the classical music calendar in Australia and we are seeking further Council support to ensure the ongoing high-quality performances professional musicians for local audiences. As per our mission statement, PSMF benefits the Mornington Peninsula Shire in many ways:

PLACE Peninsula Summer Music Festival is proud to celebrate the unique Places on the Mornington Peninsula. We partner with many local wineries and places of interest to highlight the exceptional places that the Peninsula has to offer. The high calibre of the professional musicians and the strong partnerships join to emphasise quality of experience. Our venue partners include: Montalto Winery, Moorrooduc Estate, Hurley Vineyard, Port Phillip Estate, Main Ridge Estate, Beleura House, Everywhen Artspace, Elgee Park and Peninsula Hot Springs. We also utilise some of the stunning outdoor areas in the region like Pelican Park and Balnarring Civic Reserve as well as some of the churches in the region, community theatres, schools and places like the Briars. We are keen to spread our wings and ensure we are highlighting many more of the gems that the Peninsula has to offer.

CONNECTIVITY Nothing connects people more than music. PSMF sees and actively promotes the connectivity that music can offer. We are focussed on ensuring that our festival remains actively engaging all of our community, by offering children’s programs and free community programs. In the 2019 festival, we ran a children’s hands-on experiential event at St Mark’s in Balnarring as well as a free event at Pelican Park in Hastings. In 2020, a children’s’ choir and a free community music afternoon at Balnarring Civic Reserve. Alongside these community connections, the 2,000 people who attend the festival have opportunity to unite over their love of music. Many of the events include casual nibbles and drinks where people come together to compare notes on the music and their experiences.

Submission No. 104

PROSPERITY Our firm and longstanding venue partners include many high profile businesses on the Peninsula. By partnering with them, we are ensuring that we support a diversity of income potential for them. We are supporting the local economy by offering a very fine music program of professional standing at a time when the tourist population is at its highest. This allows for the Mornington Peninsula to be seen at its best and to showcase the various unique places to a broad base of audience, who are likely to return at other times of the year. Having access to international and national musicians of this standing is rare. Showcasing these musicians alongside the stunning places we showcase ensures that both the festival and the region stands together and is viewed most favourably by musicians and music lovers around the globe.

WELLBEING It is well documented that access to music contributes to the feelings and expressions of well-being. We celebrate a diverse offering of musical genres, including from many diverse cultures. In 2020 we feature Australian Aboriginal music with Eric Avery, Japanese music with Miyama McQueen-Tokita alongside an enormous amount of classical and chamber music to ensure a huge variety of musical experiences on offer. We have partnered with the Peninsula Hot Springs to also bring one of Australia’s best violinists in Veronique Serret to play in their Health and Wellness Centre during a feature yoga class. Children benefit greatly from exposure to musical experiences at an early age. In 2020 we will be forming a children’s choir for the first time, with a public performance outcome at Balnarring Civic Reserve. They will be under the direction of Scott Buchanan who has extensive experience in children’s choirs and will work with the choir to rehearse over 3 days in the lead up to the performance. The feelings of connection and being a part of something greater than themselves as well as the wellbeing that comes with that is invaluable.
