The appointment in 1995 of the Conservatorium's first Artistic Director, Wolfram Christ, Principal Viola of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, typifies the Conservatorium's commitment to excellence and its determination to ensure that all courses and programs align to the highest and most rigorous international standards. Additionally, the Conservatorium has now built important links with the major national and state- based professional organisations, in some cases through formal programs such as the Opera Encounters Program available to all enrolled students of opera in association with The Australian Opera, and in other cases, less formal, such as the arrangement for the Australian Chamber Orchestra to offer open rehearsals to students at the Conservatorium from time to time. All of these links provide students with the opportunity to meet leading Australian professional performers and to observe their work at firsthand.
