How will this project make a difference to the community? The Peninsula Summer Music Festival has established itself as a institution 2 Submission No. 22 across the 13 years of operation offering: “Intimate Performances; World-class music; Truly unique Peninsula Places.” Our overall goal is to bring more music to more people. After a small but successful festival in 2021 under strict Covid-19 protocols, we are planning to bring music back with a resurgence. It is well documented that access to music contributes to the feelings and expressions of well-being. We celebrate a diverse offering of musical genres, including from many diverse cultures. In 2022 we feature Australian Aboriginal music, and other culturally diverse musicians alongside an enormous amount of classical and chamber music to ensure a huge variety of musical experiences on offer. Children benefit greatly from exposure to musical experiences at an early age. In 2022 we will be again forming a children’s choir on the back of the 2020 success, with a public performance outcome at Balnarring Civic Reserve during the festival. They will be under the direction of Scott Buchanan who has extensive experience in children’s choirs and will work with the choir to rehearse in term 4 - with a number of planned partnerships with local primary schools. In 2020 the success of the children's choir has meant that community support is great. We were unable to do this for 2021 due to restrictions. The feelings of connection and being a part of something greater than themselves as well as the wellbeing that comes with that is invaluable. Do you plan to seek additional funding sources, i.e. grants, donations, etc. We will be holding a donations drive, Requesting grants from Bendigo Bank and other relevant sponsors. Do you currently have money (partial or otherwise) to fund this project? We are reliant on ticket sales for this festival mainly. We will be unable to do the free community events and children's choir. Are there other community members, organisations, businesses, etc. that you are, or might, work with to help deliver this project? Peninsula Summer Music Festival is proud to celebrate the unique Places on the Mornington Peninsula. We partner with many local wineries and places of 3 Submission No. 22 interest to highlight the exceptional places that the Peninsula has to offer. The high calibre of the professional musicians and the strong partnerships join to emphasise quality of experience. Our venue partners include: Montalto Winery, Moorrooduc Estate, Hurley Vineyard, Port Phillip Estate, Main Ridge Estate, Beleura House, Everywhen Artspace, Elgee Park and Peninsula Hot Springs. We also utilise some of the stunning outdoor areas in the region like Pelican Park and Balnarring Civic Reserve as well as some of the churches in the region, community theatres, schools and places like the Briars. We are keen to spread our wings and ensure we are highlighting many more of the gems that the Peninsula has to offer. Are there key stages, timelines of dates for this project? This festival is run in January each year. Planning runs all year round. Our full program is planned for release in October. Schools for the primary school choir will be contacted in early 2021 to plan for the choir schedule delivery. Has funding previously been sought for this project? No Additional submission details Thanks to the generosity of council, we are able to plan a 2021 festival in January, that will see a number of free community events with very limited capacities, celebrating live music under strict Covid-19 protocols. We understand the huge impact that 2020 has had on people and believe that the love of live music is imperative to the health and wellbeing of a community. We look forward to partnering with Council again for the delivery of our 2022 festival and the involvement of many more of the community. Making the most of the weather and high-visitation to the Peninsula each January, the Festival continues to feature Australian musicians who live overseas playing in the world’s leading ensembles and who are returning home at Christmas, while showcasing Australia-born, Australian-based or Australian-trained artists. Through this model, we present world-class performances locally and show-case the Mornington Peninsula. Understanding that international artists might not still be the focus of our 2022 festival due to international travel restrictions, we plan to focus on local Victorian and interstate artists. The growing reputation of our Festival has meant that we have been able to attract high-profile artists, while our programing continues to include accessible music that appeals to a wide demographic. We showcase regional wines and produce, the local arts and cultural community, while promoting the Mornington Peninsula as a tourist destination. The quality of our program is reinforced through association with the finest local venues, collaborations and creative partnerships. The objectives of our festival are simple: • To enrich the cultural and social life of the region offering affordable and accessible fine music • To engage our community with artists of renown in unique Mornington Peninsula places • To attract visitors to the region by partnering with the local business • To inspire and educate young musicians of the Mornington Peninsula Our festival attracts an audience of all age groups and increasingly through local support we are able to offer free and community engagement events across the festival. As a professional festival, we pride ourselves in attracting the highest quality musicians in the fields, and are increasing opportunities across genres including classical, baroque, world music, jazz, folk and electronic music. Our 2021 festival is planned to be held under strict Covid-19 protocols. We have worked extremely hard to ensure that we could deliver some events and provide music to the people after such a hard year of no live music. In 2022 we plan to come back with a RESURGENCE. Submission No. 22 FUTURE/STRAGEGY The Peninsula Summer Music Festival has established itself as a institution across the 13 years of operation offering: “Intimate Performances; World- class music; Truly unique Peninsula Places.” As a once a year event, we have traditionally operated from year to year, surviving on depleting funds and the good will of the community. It is expensive to develop and maintain a festival, continuing to attract the calibre of artists and sustain a level of professionalism even though a number of supporters contribute for ‘love’ not money. Our long-term aim is to bring “More Music to More People”. Continuing to offer high quality professional music experiences for the local community. We aim to broaden our audience base by offering more low and no cost events. We aim to increase our engagement with the local community. Historically, the festival has existed on ticket sales, private donations and small support from Council and local businesses such as Bendigo Bank for specific events held as part of the festival. Each year we run at break even and do not have a sustainable and solid base to build on. The 2020 festival came extremely close to being cancelled due to lack of financial reserves, and only through the generosity of private donations was it able to continue. We respectfully request $36,469 (See attached budget table breakdown) to support our significant contribution to the Mornington Peninsula events and musical community for our 2022 festival. In 2022 and beyond, PSMF is committed to building sustainable models of delivery of professional music and further develop the audience base for live classical, chamber and high quality music. Over the past 14 years, PSMF has established itself as an icon on the classical music calendar in Australia and we are seeking further Council support to ensure the ongoing high-quality performances professional musicians for local audiences. As per our mission statement, PSMF benefits the Mornington Peninsula Shire in many ways: PLACE Peninsula Summer Music Festival is proud to celebrate the unique Places on the Mornington Peninsula. We partner with many local wineries and places of interest to highlight the exceptional places that the Peninsula has to offer. The high calibre of the professional musicians and the strong partnerships join to emphasise quality of experience.
