O Programa de Eliminação de Oncocercose das Américas – OEPA e o Programa de Erradicação de Oncocercose no Brasil – Ministério da Saúde, finaciaram em parte. vii RESUMO Os insetos da família Simuliidae são hematófagos e vetores de diversos patógenos dentre os quais destacam-se os vermes filarióides Mansonella ozzardi e a Onchorcerca volvulus. Dentre os grupos supraespecíficos que são vetores de mansonelose e oncocercose na América do Sul, destaca-se o gênero Cerqueirellum (Py-Daniel). O gênero Coscaroniellum (Py-Daniel) é um gênero filogeneticamante muito próximo a Cerqueirellum. Não existia concordância quanto à validade de Cerqueirelum e Coscaroniellum como clados supraespecíficos, sendo ambos os gêneros incluídos por uma escola taxonômica como grupos de espécies em Psaroniocompsa (Enderlein). Devido aos problemas nomenclaturais quanto aos clados supraespecíficos das espécies que compõem Cerqueirellum, Coscaroniellum e Psaroniocompsa, foi feita uma revisão e estabelecidas as relações filogenéticas entre as espécies envolvidas em Cerqueirellum e Coscaroniellum. Foi elaborada, primeiramente, uma lista preliminar das espécies de simulídeos incluídos nos gêneros Cerqueirellum e Coscaroniellum, sendo reunidas informações sobre localidade tipo, formas descritas, distribuição geográfica e dados biológicos. Em seguida foi examinado o material entomológico que se encontra depositado na coleção de Simuliidae do INPA. Os espécimes examinados foram montados em lâminas e feito um quadro analítico com base filogenética e montado chaves de identificação e distribuição geográfica para cada gênero estudado. Foram incluídas na análise algumas espécies de simulídeos próximas de Cerqueirellum, sendo caracterizado e apresentado um novo gênero, denominado de Shelleyellum gen. nov.. Os gêneros Cerqueirellum, Coscaroniellum e Shelleyellum gen. nov. apresentaram-se como entidades basais válidas, consistentes e monofiléticas. viii ABSTRACT The simuliid black flies are haematofagous insects, potential vectors of several pathogenic agents of human diseases such as Mansonella ozzardi and Onchorcerca volvulus filarial worms. The genus Cerqueirellum (Py-Daniel, 1983) is one of the most important supraspecific groups transmitting mansonellosis and onchocerciasis diseases in South America. The genus Coscaroniellum (Py-Daniel, 1983) is phylogenetically close to Cerqueirellum. There was not yet agreements between some .authors about the supraspecific level of the species which compose Cerqueirellum and Coscaroniellum, being both genera included for some authors in Psaroniocompsa (Enderlein). Due to the nomenclatural problems on the supraspecífic clades relationships of the species that compose Cerqueirellum, Coscaroniellum and Psaroniocompsa, a review was done and established the phylogenetic relationships between the species involved in Cerqueirellum and Coscaroniellum. For such, was firstly elaborated a preliminary list of the black fly species included in the Cerqueirellum and Coscaroniellum genera, being gathered information on type locality, described forms, geographical distribution and biological data and specimes of each species were examined. The examined specimens were slide mounted and a comparative phylogenetical analysis and identification keys were done and geographical distribution for each genus were reviewed. Some related species were included in the analysis and new genus was characterized, described and namely as Shelleyellum gen. nov. The genera Cerqueirellum, Coscaroniellum and Shelleyellum were demonstrated as consistent basal entities and well defined monophyletic clades. ix ÍNDICE 1. Introdução 1.1. ABDELNVR Medical Entomologist Medical Research Laboratory Quaestiones entomologicae Khontanm, Sudan 4:113-174 1968 The biology of 15 simuliid species in northern Alberta was studied. Simulium vittatum Zetterstedt and Simulium venustum Say were the most abundant; Prosimulium travisi Stone and Prosimulium onychodactylum Dyar and Shannon were rare. Characterictically, the univoltine species (except Cnephia mutata Malloch) were autogenous throughout the area. C. mutata was represented by both the triploid (parthenogenetic) and the rare diploid sexual forms. A key for the identification of the 31 species reported from Alberta is given. Regular sampling of simuliid larvae in the rivers and creeks shows that there are several peaks of abundance every year (1963-1965) due to the occurrence of the larvae of more than one species in the breeding localities, and that the dates, numbers, and composition of these differ slightly depending on the date of the ice break-up and the march of temperature during the season. The overwintered larvae of S. vittatum were present in the water and the ice. The susceptibility of the larvae to DDT was measured and their migration downstream was investigated by the use of plastic sampling cones. The infection rates of the adults and aquatic stages by nematodes and microsporidian protozoans and an evaluation of both predators and parasites as control agents are given.

Se encontró que el país posee una alta riqueza del grupo, se han reportado 20 especies pertenecientes al género Gigantodax y 54 al género Simulium. Esta riqueza se puede explicar por la variedad de ecosistemas que se encuentran a lo largo del territorio, debido a la presencia de las tres cordilleras y de diferentes sistemas acuáticos continentales, lo que ofrece diversos hábitats para el desarrollo de estos insectos.

The current revision, thus, includes all information known to us to have been published before 1 January 2009. The purpose and format of this inventory remains the same as for previous revisions. Because each yearly update replaces previous web revisions, we begin with this revision, to retain the introductions to previous web-based revisions. The Introduction to the 2008 revision, therefore, can be found at the end of the current year’s Introduction but before the References, which include literature from all revisions, beginning with 2008. We also have retained all nomenclatural changes (e.g., new combinations and new synonyms) and all notes from previous web revisions, beginning with 2008. These past changes and notes are summarized at the end of the “Notes for the current (2009) inventory”. In this most recent revision of the Inventory, a total of 2072 formally named species (2060 living and 12 fossil) are listed as valid (Table 1), representing a net gain of 45 valid species since the 2008 inventory revision.

Abstract.— Larvae, pupae, and teneral adults of Parasimulium crosskeyi Peter- son were collected in June 1984 from a hyporheic habitat adjacent to Wahkeena Creek, Oregon. An account of the collection and brief description of larvae and pupae are given. The immature stages of Parasimulium appear to be obligate members of the hyporheic zone. Morphology reveals a number of similarities with typical cavernicolous organisms, including apparent blindness of larvae and reduced cuticular pigmentation in both larvae and pupae. In addition to suspen- sion feeding, larvae may be consuming organic detritus deposited in the substrate. Dipterists have been interested in the enigmatic black fly genus Parasimulium Malloch, since the initial collection of adults over 70 years ago. Until recently, only eight male specimens were available for study, all but one collected by A. L. Melander in the Pacific Northwest (Washington, Oregon, and northern Cali- fornia). Included were the type species, Parasimulium furcatum Malloch, and a single representative of Parasimulium melanderi Stone.
