On the Creation of Painter Octavian Smigelschi Towards a Reassessment of Landscape
IOANA SAVU GRUIŢĂ1 ON THE CREATION OF PAINTER OCTAVIAN SMIGELSCHI TOWARDS A REASSESSMENT OF LANDSCAPE “I do not know if nature is beautiful or ugly, good or bad from a philosophical standpoint, for at all times it produces wonderful things, which attract your attention; beings whose life may be studied, this being, of course, a very interesting occupation.”2 Abstract: The article deals with some aspects of the landscape painting of Octavian Smigelschi (1866- 1912), starting from the extensive study written by Iulia Mesea: Peisagişti din sudul Transilvaniei între tradiţional şi modern. Our contribution consists in bringing some additional information about the genesis of the artist’s works. I consider that correlated with image analysis, biographical information can provide a new dimension to Smigelschi’s landscapes, which were created in two major temporal stages, the first lasting between 1886 and 1900 and the second from 1905 to 1906. I insist both on the message underlying the works and on identifying the Western European influences on the artist. I believe that some of these works are indebted to John Ruskin’s theories, while others, with a documentary purpose, were achieved under the influence of the monographic studies that dominated the period and, especially, under the influence of Professor Stefan Gróh, yet others being echoes of Jugendstil. Keywords: Smigelschi, landscape, painting, reassessment, turn of the century, Transylvania The painter Octavian Smigelschi (1866-1912)3 was not a landscape artist. However, he created numerous works in this artistic genre. This article, which aims to reassess his contribution in this direction, starts from the study of Iulia Mesea, Peisagişti din sudul Transilvaniei între tradiţional şi modern (Landscape Painters from Southern Transylvania between Tradition and Modernity)4 and offers an 1 PhD in History, Museum Curator, the National Museum of Transylvanian History, [email protected]. -

ART REVIEW AS REFLECTED by the ROMANIAN PRESS (1900-1914) - Abstract
ART REVIEW AS REFLECTED BY THE ROMANIAN PRESS (1900-1914) - Abstract - The doctoral thesis is structured according to five major units: Introduction, the six central chapters, Conclusions, References and Appendices. The paper has a total of 260 pages, of which 216 pages are the text itself, with 891 footnotes. In the Introduction I presented the reasons for choosing the subject of the paper, reminding the most important studies and research previously developed in the relevant historiography. Also, I mentioned the methods used and I listed the main cultural magazines analysed for the period between 1900 and 1914. The analysed Romanian press included both cultural magazines from the former kingdom (“Convorbiri literare”, “Noua Revistă Română”, “Sămănătorul”, “Viața Românească”, “Furnica”, “Flacăra”, etc.), as well as magazines from Transylvania (“Luceafărul”, “Transilvania”, “Țara Noastră”, “Telegraful Român”, etc.). On the other hand, I attempted a comparative analysis of the Romanian press and the western press in terms of art reviews. For this purpose I chose prestigious foreign art magazines of the time, consulted on the occasion of the mobility period spent in Italy, such as “Emporium”, “Vita d’arte”, “Il Giornale d’Italia”, “Il Marzocco”, “La Stampa”, etc. Also, I studied the funds of the International Exhibition in Rome in 1911, in which our country participated as well, the delegation of which was conducted by Al. Tzigara-Samurcaș, found in the central state archives in Rome. The second part of the thesis includes the actual research, where Chapters 1-6 are the original contribution of the author. In I. Social and Cultural Context in the Early Twentieth Century for the Romanian Elite I presented briefly the cultural and social framework in which the Romanian artists lived, were educated and created, as reflected in the press. -

The ION JALEA Museum
Învăţâmânt, Cercetare, Creaţie Vol. 3 No. 1 - 2017 One artist on the seashore – The ION JALEA Museum Lelia RUS PÎRVAN1 Abstract: Located on the seashore, near the Casino boardwalk of Constanta, the ION JALEA MUSEUM is one of the few cultural edifices in our country, exclusively dedicated to sculpture. Ion Jalea was born on May 19, 1887 in Casimcea, Tulcea; his bond with the Dobrudjan lands is proven not only by his cultural legacy, but also by a series of small portraits or sculptures, in which the people’s features, traditional dress or trades materialize in genuine anthropological studies. Carved from all sorts of materials like: plaster, bronze, stone or marble, his theme cycles include allegorical, religious or mythological, war or work scenes, nudes, portraits, peasant characters, culminating with his monumental works, all of them involving his own trademark that rambles anything simple or hazardous favouring a clear, classicized shape. Key-words: Sculpture, museum, artist, war, nude, portrait, human body, mythology Located on the seashore, near the Casino boardwalk of Constanta, the ION JALEA MUSEUM is one of the few cultural edifices in our country, exclusively dedicated to sculpture. The house belonged to Constantin Pariano, Prefect of Constanta and was designed in national (Neo-Romanian) style by the architect Victor Stephanescu, after the Great War. The building became a museum in 1968, when the sculptor initially donated the house to the city of Constanta. Subsequently, in 1984, when the collection was completed with several other sculptures donated by the family of the artist, it reached a total of 227 works. -

The Pennsylvania State University The Graduate School ICT AND STEM EDUCATION AT THE COLONIAL BORDER: A POSTCOLONIAL COMPUTING PERSPECTIVE OF INDIGENOUS CULTURAL INTEGRATION INTO ICT AND STEM OUTREACH IN BRITISH COLUMBIA A Dissertation in Information Sciences and Technology by Richard Canevez © 2020 Richard Canevez Submitted in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy December 2020 ii The dissertation of Richard Canevez was reviewed and approved by the following: Carleen Maitland Associate Professor of Information Sciences and Technology Dissertation Advisor Chair of Committee Daniel Susser Assistant Professor of Information Sciences and Technology and Philosophy Lynette (Kvasny) Yarger Associate Professor of Information Sciences and Technology Craig Campbell Assistant Teaching Professor of Education (Lifelong Learning and Adult Education) Mary Beth Rosson Professor of Information Sciences and Technology Director of Graduate Programs iii ABSTRACT Information and communication technologies (ICTs) have achieved a global reach, particularly in social groups within the ‘Global North,’ such as those within the province of British Columbia (BC), Canada. It has produced the need for a computing workforce, and increasingly, diversity is becoming an integral aspect of that workforce. Today, educational outreach programs with ICT components that are extending education to Indigenous communities in BC are charting a new direction in crossing the cultural barrier in education by tailoring their curricula to distinct Indigenous cultures, commonly within broader science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) initiatives. These efforts require examination, as they integrate Indigenous cultural material and guidance into what has been a largely Euro-Western-centric domain of education. Postcolonial computing theory provides a lens through which this integration can be investigated, connecting technological development and education disciplines within the parallel goals of cross-cultural, cross-colonial humanitarian development. -
A Reconstructed Indigenous Religious Tradition in Latvia
religions Article A Reconstructed Indigenous Religious Tradition in Latvia Anita Stasulane Faculty of Humanities, Daugavpils University, Daugavpils LV-5401, Latvia; [email protected] Received: 31 January 2019; Accepted: 11 March 2019; Published: 14 March 2019 Abstract: In the early 20th century, Dievtur¯ıba, a reconstructed form of paganism, laid claim to the status of an indigenous religious tradition in Latvia. Having experienced various changes over the course of the century, Dievtur¯ıba has not disappeared from the Latvian cultural space and gained new manifestations with an increase in attempts to strengthen indigenous identity as a result of the pressures of globalization. This article provides a historical analytical overview about the conditions that have determined the reconstruction of the indigenous Latvian religious tradition in the early 20th century, how its form changed in the late 20th century and the types of new features it has acquired nowadays. The beginnings of the Dievturi movement show how dynamic the relationship has been between indigeneity and nationalism: indigenous, cultural and ethnic roots were put forward as the criteria of authenticity for reconstructed paganism, and they fitted in perfectly with nativist discourse, which is based on the conviction that a nation’s ethnic composition must correspond with the state’s titular nation. With the weakening of the Soviet regime, attempts emerged amongst folklore groups to revive ancient Latvian traditions, including religious rituals as well. Distancing itself from the folk tradition preservation movement, Dievtur¯ıba nowadays nonetheless strives to identify itself as a Latvian lifestyle movement and emphasizes that it represents an ethnic religion which is the people’s spiritual foundation and a part of intangible cultural heritage. -
