Permits / Approvals Α.1 d.4 Permits All the necessary permits and approvals, according to current legislation, the contractual documents, current environmental provisions and environmental designs have been investigated and recorded in the “Report of the Necessary Permits and Approvals, July 2008”. Α.2 d.5 Archaeological matters By way of our letters with ref. numbers CC/C/CO/GE000/PRO0384/JR/ek/15‐09‐2008, CC/C/CO/GE000/PRO0387/JR/ek/15‐09‐2008, CC/C/CO/GE000/PRO0385/JR/ek/15‐09‐2008 and CC/C/CO/GE000/PRO0386/JR/ek/15‐09‐2008, the competent Ephorates of Antiquities (the 19th and 17th Ephorates of Byzantine Antiquities; the 34th and 30th Ephorates of Prehistoric & Classical Antiquities) were notified of the commencement of works in order for these services to take the necessary action. In accordance with the 5765/24‐09‐2008 reply of the 30th Ephorate of Prehistoric & Classical Antiquities, the Department proposes conducting a rescue excavation for two detected archaeological sites along the axis. Moreover, we notified, via said document, 3 more proposals in relation to the construction procedures. Α.3 d.6 Forestry Service With 2376/24‐07‐2008 Decision of the General Secretary of the Region of Thessaly, 51363/13‐6‐2008 Decision of the Grevena Prefecture Forestry Directorate of Approvals for conducting works on forest land the Region of Western Macedonia and 1978/4‐7‐2008 Decision of the General Secretary of the Region of Thessaly, our applications dated 23‐6‐2008, 26‐05‐2008 and 8‐4‐2008 requesting a permit for interventions on forest land for geological‐explanatory works in the zone along which the E‐65 Motorway will pass (Section 4: Kalambaka‐Egnatia Odos) and within the areas of responsibilities of above departments, were approved. Lastly, with our applications with ref. nos. CC/C/CO/GE000/PRO0463/JR/ek/26‐09‐2008 and CC/C/CO/GE000/PRO0467/JR/ek/26‐09‐2008 lodged with the Trikala Forestry Service and the Grevena Prefecture Forestry Directorate we requested a permit to clear forest area and commence works in the zone along which the Motorway will pass. Α.5 d.11 Environmental approvals All the applications for the environmental permits and approvals which are necessary, according to current legislation, will be submitted to the Special Environmental Service / Ministry for the Environment, Physical Planning and Public Works. To date, no environmental permit or approval is in progress for said sections of E‐65. Α.6 d.12 Permits and approvals for quarries The suitability of the fill obtained during the opening of the roadway is currently being investigated. The results of these investigations are not yet complete. The sites which were preselected for obtaining construction fill are quarries which currently operate legally; inactive quarries; sites which were used in the past, most likely illegally, for obtaining fill and which were not restored and new sites which contain suitable fill. For the preselection of locations at which to establish ancillary works, all the restrictions and obligations contained in current legislation, the project’s contractual documents, current environmental provisions and the project’s environmental designs were recorded (“Report: Proposed Borrow Pit Locations – Environmental Restrictions”) and taken into consideration. No. Outline of Provision Progress Prov. 1 2 3 4 Α.8 d.30 Water use This matter will be dealt with in the Special Technical Implementation Plans to be submitted in order to obtain permits and approvals for worksite locations. In addition, the other permits which, according to current legislation, are necessary in order to use water, will be obtained. The procedures for obtaining a permit to use water are outlined in the “Report of the Necessary Permits and Approvals, July 2008”. To date, no water has been used. Β. Designs – Studies Β.1 d.49 Landscaping designs The corresponding landscaping designs will be drafted taking into consideration the Environmental Provision The final project implementation designs are currently being drafted, taking into consideration the Environmental Provision. Any landscaping works will be conducted once the landscaping design has been drafted by specialized engineers, taking into consideration the Environmental Provision.     10 11 Acknowledgements Introduction General geography of Greece Greece is a relatively small country, and with a surface area of 132,000 km2 it is only half as big as the UK. Encompassed, however, in this modest area, is a great diversity of habitats, exceeding many European countries of much larger size. For example, one can encounter in Epirus alpine areas complete with lush conifer forests, dramatic peaks and extensive snowfields that physiographically resemble Switzerland. On the other hand, some regions of the southern Aegean are closer to Africa than to Athens, and their climate and habitats reflect this proximity. Southeastern Crete for example, con- tains one of the few true European deserts, an area closely resembling certain hamma- da regions of the Middle East. Greece is a country of mountains and islands. The Pindos range, an extension of the Dinaric Alps, forms the backbone of peninsular Greece. A number of smaller mountains originate as spurs from this block, although some, including Mount Olympus, the highest mountain in Greece (2,917 m elevation) arise in relative isola- tion. A second major mountain block, the Rhodopes, located in Thrace, runs in a roughly east-west direction separating Greece and Bulgaria. The Peloponnese, a small- er peninsula in the south, is as mountainous as the mainland and encompasses several peaks exceeding 2,000 m in elevation. With the exception of a few large flat regions located mostly in Thessaly and Thrace, the country lacks extensive plains. Typically the mountains drop rather steeply into the sea and are generally flanked only by narrow coastal plains.

ABSTRACT This thesis sets out to study the representations of rural people in Greek travel writing over the period 1850-1870, by focusing on the way in which such representations reveal the process of national identity formation. In the first chapter, I address the issue of travellers’ lack of interest in the peasant way of life, and I undertake to explore the significance of this ‘absence’. In the second chapter, I examine travel texts pursuing to establish a direct connection of rural customs and mores with the ancient Greek ones. In the third chapter, I analyse the way in which the ethnographical concern of travel writing brings to the fore primitive aspects of rural life. The concept of primitiveness will be further developed in the last two chapters, in the context of race and gender representations in the observation of Greek peasants.

INTRODUCTION This Environmental Management Report is the approach of the Construction J/V's Environmental Management Process for the first semester of 2011 and has been drawn up in the context of its contractual obligation deriving from Article 13.3 paragraph (c) of the Project’s Design - Construction Agreement (11.2.2 (iii) of the Concession Agreement 3597/20-07-2007 - OGG 3445Α/25-07-2007). The documentation of each semi-annual environmental management report is part of the Annual Report submitted to the EYPE of YPEKA by January 31 of each year throughout the Design - Construction and Operation Period, in accordance with the approved Environmental terms of the project. Also, it has to be noted that this report constitutes a development / improvement of the structure of previous retrospective reports and it is clear that the purpose of this development/improvement is the improvement of addressing environmental issues. The ongoing Environmental Management Plan of the project, which is characterized by its continuous improvement, plays an important role in this development. ABSTRACT This dissertation is an attempt to describe and analyse the history of the relationship between the imperial centre and a minor peripheral area, but also the first step towards a more complete understanding of the history of the areas of Kozani, Serfice, and Velvendos during the 18th century, on the basis of both Ottoman and Greek primary sources, in an attempt to replace the old and, rather obsolete, nationalist narratives prevalent in the writings of the local amateur historians. Through the examination of the tax-farming system, on the one hand, and the timar system, on the other, in the areas under study, this dissertation addresses the developments that occurred at a local level in a period of Ottoman history marked by great changes and experimentation with new fiscal practices.
