Deutsche Biographie – Onlinefassung NDB-Artikel Acidalius, Valens Humanist, Philologe und neulateinischer Dichter, * 25.5.1567 Wittstock (Brandenburg), † 25.5.1595 Neisse. (evangelisch, dann wahrscheinlich katholisch) Genealogie V Heinrich Acidalius (eigentlich Haveken- oder Hauckenthal), († vor 1580), Rektor und Superintendent in Wittstock; 4 B u. a. →Christian Acidalius (1576–1631), Mediziner, Professor in Altdorf.

Acidalius on Tacitus* F. R. D. Goodyear Described 1607 As An
1 Acidalius on Tacitus* F. R. D. Goodyear described 1607 as an annus mirabilis for Tacitean studies. Two publications exerted lasting influence on textual scholarship and commentary on Tacitus, and another marked a methodological advance in the appreciation of the manuscript evidence.1 In 1607 appeared at Antwerp the final revision of Justus Lipsius’ edition of Tacitus. In the breadth and depth of its coverage of philological and historical problems Lipsius’ edition would provide a vulgate text and commentary2 until German scholars put both on a new footing in the nineteenth century. In Frankfurt Curtius Pichena published an edition of Tacitus’ works. Pichena, whose services to Tacitus Goodyear ranked second only to Lipsius’,3 has the distinction of being the first editor of Tacitus to recognise that the first and second Medicean manuscripts in the Biblioteca Laurenziana in Florence are important witnesses to the text of the Annals: he was the first editor to use the second Medicean in a printed edition, the first to make both Mediceans one basis of a printed edition.4 It would be more than two hundred years before editors would develop Pichena’s insight and recognise that the Mediceans were not merely a crucial but the unique source of the text of Tacitus’ Annals and Histories and of all the other extant manuscripts of these two works. And in 1607 at Hannover appeared the Notae on * Without the instruction and inspiration that I have received from Michael I should never have developed a serious interest in philology and could never have written this essay on Acidalius for him. -

L BROADWAY HOUSE, 68-74 CARTER LANE, E.G. 1914 The rights of translation and of reproduction are reserved Printed by BALLANTYNK, HANSON &* Co. at the Ballantyne Press, Edinburgh PREFACE THE life of Bruno has been written in English more than once, and he has had many excellent commentators. No one can now write about him without availing himself very largely of the solid and scholarly work done by Tocco, Fio- rentino, Berti, Brunnhofer, Mclntyre and others. The apology for the appearance of the present work must be that some facts, unrecorded in England, have come to light of late years, and also that a few usual, almost unavoidable in accuracies require correction. Moreover, I have tried to follow the development of Bruno s thoughts in the order in or I find which he declared them ; and, on one two points, myself compelled to differ from the conclusions of this or the other commentator. Most of Bruno s works have been published in the editions of Wagner, Lagarde, and Gfrorer, well edited for their day. -

The Pennsylvania State University The Graduate School School of Music RECOVERING QUEEN PENELOPE: A CULTURAL AND MUSICAL REINTERPRETATION OF MONTEVERDI’S IL RITORNO D’ULISSE IN PATRIA A Thesis in Musicology by Kyle Masson © 2014 Kyle Masson Submitted in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Arts May 2014 The thesis of Kyle Masson was reviewed and approved* by the following: Marica Tacconi Professor of Musicology Thesis Advisor Charles Youmans Associate Professor of Musicology Sue Haug Professor of Music Director of the School of Music *Signatures are on file in the Graduate School iii ABSTRACT Claudio Monteverdi’s Il ritorno d’Ulisse in patria (1640) constitutes a unique source for understanding Venetian norms concerning the nature of marriage, love, and the emergence of public opera as a popular form of entertainment in 17th-century Venice. Monteverdi’s first foray into public opera demonstrates the composer’s ability to adapt to shifting expectations from the audience while fulfilling his own personal aesthetic. This study seeks to understand the plurality of meanings embodied in a particular character, Queen Penelope, in an effort to recover period listening practices and receptions of operatic character. In the historiography of Il ritorno studies, Penelope acquires a degree of autonomy more closely correlated to her Homeric counterpart than her textual and musical treatment suggests. Augmented by an investigation of the social conditions and aesthetic shifts of the time, a study of Penelope’s music in its dramatic contexts reveals a systematic objectification of her character. By examining these representations as deliberate actions of the composer, one concludes that the opera focuses more on women as objectified symbols worthy of pity than on chastity, prudence, constancy, or any other such virtues. -

The Articulation of Difference: Imagining “Women’s Language” between 1650 and the Present Sophie A. Salvo Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2017 © 2017 Sophie A. Salvo All rights reserved Abstract The Articulation of Difference: Imagining “Women’s Language” between 1650 and the Present Sophie A. Salvo This dissertation is an archaeology of so-called Weibersprache. While the concept of feminine language is typically associated with 1970s feminist theory, this study shows that there was a diverse history of conceptualizing “women’s language” prior to this period. I begin with seventeenth-century ethnographic texts that report on a langage des femmes among Island Caribs (by authors such as Jean Baptiste du Tertre, Charles de Rochefort, and Raymond Breton). Shifting genres, I then trace how the idea of a separate women’s language was appropriated by German philology and philosophies of language in the nineteenth century. I show how authors ranging from Wilhelm von Humboldt to Fritz Mauthner reconceptualize Weibersprache to be a universal female phenomenon and present “primitive” women’s languages as evidence for the general alterity of female speech. The second chapter of the dissertation juxtaposes this genealogy of Weibersprache with the nineteenth-century debate over the origin of grammatical gender, and contends that discourses on gendered language constitute an important part of the broader reconfiguration of the sexes during this period. The third chapter moves to literary discourse to show how the notion of women's language fulfills a different discursive function around 1900. -
