2013 GoPro IRONMAN WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP RESULTS Top Three Men FREDERIK VAN LIERDE Belgium • 08:12:29 A third place finish in 2012 and three IRONMAN France wins served as notice that the 35-year-old was ready to capture a world champion title. Following in the footsteps of his coach and countryman, Luc Van Lierde, Frederik became the second Belgian IRONMAN World Champion in the event’s history. LUKE MCKENZIE Australia • 08:15:19 The six-time IRONMAN Champion made a bold statement that he would be a contender in Kona with an impressive win at IRONMAN Cairns earlier this year. McKenzie surged to the front of the race early in the marathon, only to be passed heading into the famed Natural Energy Lab by eventual champion, Frederik Van Lierde. His runner-up finish, though, was the performance of a lifetime for the 32-year-old who competed in his first triathlon in 1994. SEBASTIAN KIENLE Germany • 08:19:24 The two-time IRONMAN 70.3 World Champion finished fourth in 2012 and moved up one position on the podium at this year’s 35th anniversary event. Building on the German tradition of strong cyclists, Kienle continues to improve in the water and on the run, making him a likely contender in Kona for many years to come. 2 2013 GoPro IRONMAN WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP RESULTS Top Three Women MIRINDA CARFRAE Australia • 08:52:14 The 2010 IRONMAN World Champion proved her first win was no fluke with a record-setting performance that included the third fastest run split overall (2:50:39) and a new course record (8:52:14). Carfrae becomes only the second Australian woman to win in Kona, and the fourth multiple champion from down under. Carfrae will further celebrate today’s win when she weds fellow pro and today’s fifth-place finisher, Tim O’Donnell in two months. RACHEL JOYCE Great Britain • 08:57:28 Spanning a three-year period, the 2013 IRONMAN Texas Champion finished sixth, fifth and fourth here in Kona. Sickness waylaid that steady progression last year, but she simply skipped a third place finish and moved right to second. The 35-year-old led for much of the marathon today, but wasn’t able to hold off the speedy Mirinda Carfrae during the final stretch of the marathon. LIZ BlATCHFORD Great Britain • 09:03:35 A former short-course specialist, Blatchford burst onto the IRONMAN scene this year with a win at IRONMAN Cairns and IRONMAN 70.3 Busselton. A fourth-place finish at IRONMAN Mont-Tremblant also enabled the 33-year-old to compete in Kona, where she demonstrated her talent with an impressive podium-finish debut. 3 2013 GoPro IRONMAN WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP RESULTS Contents Top Three Men .........................................................2 Top Three Women .................................................3 Stats ...............................................................................6 This Year in Kona ....................................................7 Pro Men Results ......................................................8 Pro Women’s Results ............................................9 Hand Cycle Results ............................................ 10 Physically Challenged Recognition ........10 Military Results ..................................................... 10 Top Five Swim, Bike, Run ................................ 11 Overall Results ...................................................... 13 Age Group Results ............................................. 48 4 OCTOBER 12 | 2013 Hope is our willpower and waypower in our lives.
