Page 2 The PEP Quarterly Postal Worker Position By: Jonah Gilman A Postal Worker is someone that works in a post office. You only need a high school di- ploma or a GED. You need to be able to listen to others. You need to have problem solving skills. You have to be able to talk to others. Their yearly salary is $55,000. My interview By Brian Ramos Last Thursday, I went with my class to Culpepper Garden while the others work, I went with Ms. Ea- gle to meet Chef Ray for my interview. At first, I started to feel a bit nervous because this is my first job interview for my internship at Culpepper. Anyway, I began my interview by introducing my- self to Chef Ray and shake his hand. We talked about what jobs Culpepper does. I know it’s a home for senior citizens. But the jobs they have are cleaning. The interview went fine, but sadly his as- sistant wasn’t here on Thursday and Chef Ray has to postpone my internship for Tuesday, which was cancelled because of the snow. But I can get a sec- ond chance this Thursday morning. Let’s hope my first job at Culpepper goes smoothly or else my day will be a downer.     Situations Vol. 3 (Winter 2009) © 2009 by Yonsei University Mariah Junglan Min1 [email protected] The Art of Crossing the Line Although the intensive coverage provided to the new all-boy and all-girl bands through the Internet and in more traditional media such as television may make it seem as though such they have long dominated popular music, the current explosion in popularity of idol groups begun only two years ago. What is more, this is not the first time that such groups have stormed the K-pop charts. The first wave of massively popular idol groups was in the late 90s, when a veritable army of teens made their debut as singers. Korean multi-entertainment companies recognized the business potential in well-trained young and attractive stars, and the feverish reception from the public confirmed this. The result was that H.O.T., Sechs Kies, Shinhwa, Fin.K.L., S.E.S., and G.O.D. enjoyed chart success and outstanding album sales. Around 2002, this first golden age of idol groups came to an end. Most of the first wave of idols split up, while some individual members went on to pursue solo careers. Although some groups did continue, with Shinhwa performing as recently as 2008, the moment of the idol group seemed to have passed. For a short time, the K-pop scene was now host to a series of successful solo artists, such as Rain and Yi Hyo-ri, the latter a former member of the all-girl band Fin.K.L. In 2004, the first forerunners of the second wave began to appear, with TVXQ, for example, releasing their first single that year.

Using critical linguistic ethnography, this study traces how 아미 microbloggers’ digital conversations embody Jenkins’ principles of participatory fandom and Wenger’s characteristics of communities of learning practice. By creating Wei’s multilingual translanguaging spaces, 아미 assemble interest-based collectives Pérez González calls translation adhocracies, who collaboratively access resources, produce content and distribute fan compositions within and beyond fandom members. On one hand, the international expansion of K-pop can be understood as a result of the strategic planning and business execution that are created and carried out by the entertainment agencies. On the other hand, external circumstances such as the rise of social media also create a wide array of opportunities for K-pop to broaden its global appeal. The research explores the ways how the interplay between external circumstances and organizational strategies has jointly contributed to the global circulation of K-pop. The research starts with providing a general descriptive overview of K-pop. Following that, quantitative methods are applied to measure and assess the international recognition and global spread of K-pop. Next, a systematic approach is used to identify and analyze factors and forces that have important influences and implications on K-pop’s globalization. The analysis is carried out based on three levels of business environment which are macro, operating, and internal level. PEST analysis is applied to identify critical macro-environmental factors including political, economic, socio-cultural, and technological.

    CPR for the Arcade Culture A Case History on the Development of the Dance Dance Revolution Community Alexander Chan SUID 5075504 STS 145: History of Computer Game Design Stanford University March 16, 2004 Introduction Upon entering an arcade, you come across an unusual spectacle. Loud Japanese techno and a flashing neon glow pour out of the giant speakers and multicolored lights of an arcade console at the center of the room. Stranger than the flashy arcade cabinet is the sweaty teenager stomping on a metal platform in front of this machine, using his feet to vigorously press oversized arrows as the screen in front of him displays arrows scrolling upward. A growing group of people crowd around to watch this unusual game-play, cheering the player on. In large letters, the words “Dance Dance Revolution 3rd Mix” glow above the arcade machine. Most people who stumble upon a scene similar to this one would rarely believe that such a conceptually simple arcade game could foster an enormous nation-wide game community, both online and offline. Yet the rules of the game are deceptively simple. The players (one or two) must press the arrows on the platform (either up, down, left, or right) when the corresponding arrows on the screen reach the top, usually on beat with the techno/pop song being played. If the player doesn’t press the arrows on time, the song will quickly come to an end, and the machine will Arrows scrolling up a DDR screen ask for more quarters to continue play.
