The Khyber Pass the Khyber Pass Is a Narrow, Steep-Sided Pass That Connects Northern Pakistan with Afghanistan
Name ___________________ Date ____ Class _____ Physical Geography of South Asia DiHerentiated Instrudion The Khyber Pass The Khyber Pass is a narrow, steep-sided pass that connects northern Pakistan with Afghanistan. (A pass is a lower point that allows easier access through a mountain range.) The Khyber Pass winds for about 30 miles (48 km) through the Safed Koh Mountains, which are part of the Hindu Kush range on the Pakistan-Afghanistan border. Roads through the pass link the cities of Peshawar, Pakistan, . and Kabul, Afghanistan. Because of its strategic location, the Khyber Pass has been a vital trade-and invasion-route from Central Asia to South Asia for centuries. About 326 B.C., Alexander the Great moved his troops through the pass on the way to India. British and Indian forces used it as an entry point for their invasions of Afghanistan during the three Afghan Wars (the last occurring in 1919). Some historians have even theorized that the Aryan people originally migrated to India by going through the Khyber Pass. Today two highways snake through the Khyber Pass-one for vehicles and the other for traditional camel caravans. A railway line also winds through the pass. Recently, the Khyber Pass has been used by refugees from the Afghanistan civil war to get into Pakistan, and by arms dealers transporting weapons into Afghanistan. The people who live in the villages along the Khyber Pass are mainly ethnic Pashtuns. During the Afghan-Soviet War (1979-1989), Pashtuns were important members of the mujahideen. These are Islamic guerrilla groups that fought the Soviets during their takeover of Afghanistan. -

Governance and Militancy in Pakistan's Kyber Agency
December 2011 1 Governance and Militancy in Pakistan’s Khyber Agency Mehlaqa Samdani Introduction and Background In mid-October 2011, thousands of families were fleeing Khyber, one of the seven tribal agencies in Pakistan’s Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA), to refugee camps or relatives living outside of FATA. Their flight was in response to the announcement by the Pakistani military that it was undertaking a fresh round of operations against militant groups operating in the area. Militants have been active in Khyber (and FATA more generally) for several years. Some have used the area as a safe haven, resting between their own military operations in Afghanistan or other parts of Pakistan. Others have competed locally for influence by providing justice or security services, by decrying the ruling elite’s failure to provide these and other services to the local population, or by using force against those people the militants consider threatening or un-Islamic. The Pakistani military’s actions against militants in Khyber have already driven most of these nonstate groups out of the more populated areas and into Khyber’s remote Tirah Valley. But beyond that, the government of Pakistan has failed to implement most of the legal and political changes required to reform Khyber’s dysfunctional governance system to meet the needs of its residents. Khyber Agency is home to some half-million people, all of whom are ethnic Pashtuns from four major tribal groupings: Afridi, Shinwari, Mullagori, and Shalmani. It is also home to the historic Khyber Pass (to Afghanistan’s Nangarhar Province). Khyber Agency covers an area of 2,576 square kilometers, with Mohmand Agency to the north, the district of Peshawar to the east, Orakzai Agency to the south, and Kurram Agency to the west. -
'Pashtunistan': the Challenge to Pakistan and Afghanistan

Harrison * Theme: The increasing co-operation between Pashtun nationalist and Islamist forces against Punjabi domination could lead to the break-up of Pakistan and Afghanistan and the emergence of a new national entity: an ‘Islamic Pashtunistan’. Summary: The alarming growth of al-Qaeda and the Taliban in the Pashtun tribal region of north-western Pakistan and southern Afghanistan is usually attributed to the popularity of their messianic brand of Islam and to covert help from Pakistani intelligence agencies. But another, more ominous, reason also explains their success: their symbiotic relationship with a simmering Pashtun separatist movement that could lead to the unification of the estimated 41 million Pashtuns on both sides of the border, the break-up of Pakistan and Afghanistan, and the emergence of a new national entity, an ‘Islamic Pashtunistan’. This ARI examines the Pashtun claim for an independent territory, the historical and political roots of the Pashtun identity, the implications for the NATO- or Pakistani-led military operations in the area, the increasing co-operation between Pashtun nationalist and Islamist forces against Punjabi domination and the reasons why the Pashtunistan movement, long dormant, is slowly coming to life. This report will be updated as events warrant. A U.S.-Pakistan relationship marked by periods of both cooperation and discord was transformed by the September 2001 terrorist attacks on the United States and the ensuing enlistment of Pakistan as a key ally in U.S.-led counterterrorism efforts. Top U.S. officials have praised Pakistan for its ongoing cooperation, although long-held doubts exist about Islamabad’s commitment to some core U.S. interests. Pakistan is identified as a base for terrorist groups and their supporters operating in Kashmir, India, and Afghanistan. Since 2003, Pakistan’s army has conducted unprecedented and largely ineffectual counterterrorism operations in the country’s Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) bordering Afghanistan, where Al Qaeda operatives and pro-Taliban insurgents are said to enjoy “safe haven.” Militant groups have only grown stronger and more aggressive in 2008.
