1 PERFORMANCE MIX ARTISTS 2013:BIOGRAPHIES Renée Archibald presents Shake Shake, a duet that brings new life to the old cliché of the dancer’s body as instrument. The work investigates sound as a kinetic sense, with rhythm accumulating and dissolving into sempiternal metabolic process and tumbling into finely-tuned cacophony that animates the performance space with lush visual noise. Shake Shake is performed by Jennifer Lafferty and Renée Archibald. Archibald is currently a third year MFA candidate and Teaching Assistant in The Department of Dance at the University of Illinois. After receiving a BFA from University of North Carolina School of the Arts, Archibald lived in New York City for ten years where she performed with independent artists including Christopher Williams, Ann Liv Young, and Rebecca Lazier. Her choreographic work has been presented at NY venues including The Brooklyn Museum, The Chocolate Factory, Danspace Project, Dance Theater Workshop, and The Kitchen. Archibald has taught at Barnard College and White Mountain Summer Dance Festival and has received choreographic residencies through the Brooklyn Arts Exchange, Movement Research, and Yaddo. In 2012, she was awarded the U of Dance Department's Vannie L. Sheiry Memorial Scholarship for outstanding performance. vimeo.com/reneearchibald Oren Barnoy presents Angels My House I Promise. Barnoy dives into an unknown world of dance while investigating not knowing. This experience of dancing is somewhere between ritual, improvisation, score, therapy, and set choreography. It produces itself. Barnoy showed his choreography between 2000-2004 at Joyce SoHo, PS1, Dancenow, Galapagos, WAX. In 2005, Barnoy took a four year break from dance and moved to Miami.

When we looked back at Pentacle’s 40-plus-years working with performing artists, we could see that administrative support was vital to the creative process. Artists who moved from emergent to renowned had often utilized multiple services of Pentacle along their way. Although we believed in this methodology of administrative support, we had only anecdotal evidence to support our theory. With initial support from The Scherman Foundation’s Rosin Fund, and in collab- oration with Hollis Headrick/Arts and Cultural Strategies, Inc., we launched ART, a study designed to test our theory and provide insights into how to better serve our community of performing artists, particularly emerging, underrepresented artists of color.

  • 2020-2021 Joffrey Ballet School Trainee Course Catalog
Welcome to the Joffrey Ballet School’s Trainee Program Catalog for 2020-2021! At the Joffrey Ballet School, we focus on preparing students for a professional career as a dancer. We offer two programs: a Ballet Trainee Program, and a Jazz and Contemporary Trainee Program. The Joffrey Ballet School is an accredited institutional member of the National Association of Schools of Dance (NASD), meets the U.S.A. Department of Education standards for a school of vocational training, and is a Licensed Private Career School in the State of New York (under the supervision of the New York Education Department’s Bureau of Proprietary School Supervision). In this Catalog, you will find a range of material about our two programs, including details about auditions, course descriptions and performance opportunities, career planning and mentoring, as well as information on housing arrangements, fees and financial assistance. If you have any further questions after reading the Catalog, please contact one the program’s Directors or Coordinators, listed in the Contacts section. Questions related to the process of enrollment should be director to one of our Enrollment Agents listed in the Contacts section. The student should be aware that some information in the catalog may change. It is recommended that students consider checking with the school director to determine if there is any change from the information provided in the catalog. In addition, a catalog will contain information on the school’s teaching personnel and courses/curricula offered. Please be advised that the State Education Department separately licenses all teaching personnel and independently approves all courses and curricula offered.

  • New Materials: Natural Elements and the Body in Screendance
New Materials: Natural Elements and the Body in Screendance Sylvie Vitaglione, New York University Abstract This article explores the practice of shooting on location in screendance advocating for a practice that explores the concept of material specificity in order to create grounded conceptual works. In order to metaphorically and literally ground the dancing body, this article examines the crucial dichotomy between intervention in sites and integration of sites in order to understand exactly what stance screendance takes on its settings. In other words, what do artists take from the site and what do they bring to it? I begin by examining various definitions of site-specificity. By surveying theories and practices surrounding the artistic treatments of locations, my aim is to highlight the choreographic and cinematic techniques that connect the dancing body to the environment. I argue that through the use of natural elements these films articulate a version of site-specificity deeply connected to the materiality of each location rather than to its geography or history. Keywords: site-specificity, land art, material specificity, location shooting, screendance Screendance is concerned with the body. As the exploration of the friction between the corporeal and the technological, between the live and the recorded, between the still and the mobile continues, in recent years the practice has shifted to new grounds: screendance has become concerned with space.1 The camera and its accompanying gear have pushed dancing bodies outside to explore sites and surfaces beyond the studio and the stage. Our sprung wood floors and smooth Marley now quasi-obsolete onscreen, the screendance body takes root outdoors.2 Shooting on-location has not only become a possibility, it has become the default option.

  • 2013-14 Season Brochure
September 2013 Dear Friends and Patrons, Welcome to our 2013-14 season! The past year has seen many exciting developments, including the strengthening of relationships between the Claire Trevor School of the Arts and the Southern California community, as well as with other Schools in the university. We were honored to host the Hubbard/LINES ballet residency, which developed a collaboration that was then performed in Los Angeles’s Dorothy Chandler Pavilion and Chicago’s Harris Theater. The multimedia Sacre Project, created and debuted in our Contemporary Arts Center, went on to be replicated at the Segerstrom Center for the Arts and performed with the Pacific Symphony as part of its Rite of Spring Turns 100 concerts. We were also delighted to present a second and expanded season of the New Swan Shakespeare Festival here on the UCI campus, which played to sold out audiences and great acclaim. In addition to many other exhibitions and performances, we also vastly increased our Summer Academies in the Arts and expanded our community engagement and outreach. As part of our increased dialogue with the community, we have made a few significant changes to enhance our patrons’ experience. We will now be providing complimentary shuttle service to many events, earlier start times for weeknight drama productions, discounted parking fees for season subscribers, and partnerships with several area restaurants. The season ahead is built on this extraordinary momentum. In partnership with the Schools of Law and Humanities, we will present The Trial of Dedan Kimathi, a play written by Distinguished Professor of Comparative Literature Ngugi wa Thiong’o, which explores the complex issues of citizenship and justice.
