6464 The Trotman Family. Trotman of Syston. We now give a pedigree of the Trotmans of Syston Court, who were settled there from1651 untilitpassed to the female line on the death of Mr. Fiennes Trotman in 1835. A fine engraving of this mansion, the seat of Samuel Trotman, Esq., which has remained substantially unaltered to the present day, is given in Sir Robert Atkyns' Gloucestershire. I. Samuel Trotman, of the Inner Temple, Esq., and of Bucknell, Oxfordshire, in 1638, and Syston Court, Gloucester- shire, which he bought in 1651, was the seventh son,* and the thirteenth childofMr.Edward Trotman, the elder, ofEastwood, who v comfortably departed this life," and was buried at Cam in 1633. He was born 10, and bapt. at Cam, 17 Feb., 1599, and died 18 Jan., 1684; buried at Bucknell, m.i.; he married, first,Elizabeth, daughter of Thomas Waigh, of Clerkenwell, lie, iz May, 1638, by whom he had issue : (1) Elizabeth, died ininfancy. He mar., secondly, Mary, dau. of Samuel Warcup, of English, Oxfordshire, by Ann, his wife, daughter of William Lenthall, of Burford Priory, and sister of William Lenthall, Speaker of the LongParliament, lie, 4March, 1646-7 ;she died 15 April,1667 ; buried at Bucknell, 9 Sept., 1667, m.i., she had issue: (2) Mary, born 1647; married Richard Osborn, lie. 2 Dec. 1672, and d. s.p. (3) Samuel Trotman, of whom next. Signed Page 3 ABSTRACT This thesis considers the English parliamentary privilege of freedom from arrest (and other legal processes), 1603-1629. Although it is under-represented in the historiography, the early Stuart Commons cherished this particular privilege as much as they valued freedom of speech. Previously one of the privileges requested from the monarch at the start of a parliament, by the seventeenth century freedom from arrest was increasingly claimed as an ‘ancient’, ‘undoubted’ right that secured the attendance of members, and safeguarded their honour, dignity, property, and ‘necessary’ servants. Uncertainty over the status and operation of the privilege was a major contemporary issue, and this prompted key questions for research. First, did ill definition of the constitutional relationship between the crown and its prerogatives, and parliament and its privileges, lead to tensions, increasingly polemical attitudes, and a questioning of the royal prerogative? Where did sovereignty now lie? Second, was it important to maximise the scope of the privilege, if parliament was to carry out its business properly? Did ad hoc management of individual privilege cases nevertheless have the cumulative effect of enhancing the authority and confidence of the Commons? Third, to what extent was the exploitation or abuse of privilege an unintended consequence of the strengthening of the Commons’ authority in matters of privilege? Such matters are not treated discretely, but are embedded within chapters that follow a thematic, broadly chronological approach.

I certify that all material in this thesis which is not my own work has been identified and that no material has previously been submitted and approved for the award of a degree by this or any other University. 2 ABSTRACT This thesis is concerned chiefly with the military role of sea power during the English Civil War. Parliament’s seizure of the Royal Navy in 1642 is examined in detail, with a discussion of the factors which led to the King’s loss of the fleet and the consequences thereafter. It is concluded that Charles I was outmanoeuvred politically, whilst Parliament’s choice to command the fleet, the Earl of Warwick, far surpassed him in popularity with the common seamen. The thesis then considers the advantages which control of the Navy provided for Parliament throughout the war, determining that the fleet’s protection of London, its ability to supply besieged outposts and its logistical support to Parliamentarian land forces was instrumental in preventing a Royalist victory. Furthermore, it is concluded that Warwick’s astute leadership went some way towards offsetting Parliament’s sporadic neglect of the Navy. The thesis demonstrates, however, that Parliament failed to establish the unchallenged command of the seas around the British Isles.

1 The Return of the King (1658±1660) 1 The Fall of the Protectorate (September 1658±April 1659)1 `All Men wondred to see all so quiet, in so dangerous a time' wrote the Puritan minister Richard Baxter of the autumn of 1658.The death of Oliver Cromwell on 3 September signalled no discernible quickening of either royalist or repub- lican pulses.There was no sudden or general upsurge of public opinion either against the Protectorate or for a return to monarchy: `Contrary to all expec- tation both at home and abroad, this earthquake was attended with no signal alteration', recalled Charles II's Chancellor, Edward Hyde, afterwards Earl of Clarendon.2 Nor, though `all the commonwealth party' may have `cried out upon [Richard's] assuming the protectorship, as a high usurpation', was there any concerted attempt by republicans to undo what they saw as the perversion of the Good Old Cause into the tyranny of rule by a single person: `There is not a dogge that waggs his tongue, soe great a calm are wee in', observed John Thurloe, Oliver's, and now Richard's, Secretary of State.3 The Humble Petition and Advice, the Protectorate's constitution since 1657, empowered Cromwell to name his successor, but this was managed `so sleightly, as some doubt whether he did it at all' reported John Barwick, future Dean of St Paul's, in a letter to Charles II.Nevertheless, despite the want of any formal or written nomination, Richard Cromwell's succession was generally accepted not only without opposition but with signs of positive relief.The proclamation of his

Oliver Cromwell was commanding the New Model Army in Ireland, William Lenthall was Speaker of the the Rump Parliament of the Commonwealth of England. This letter covers the infamous storming of Drogheda N.B. The date in the letter is given as "upon Friday, the 30th of August last", however Thomas Carlyle, points out that it was "Friday 31 August;" and that Cromwell consistently had the date wrong by one day throughout the letter. Recording, Reporting and Printing the Cromwellian 'Kingship Debates'
1 Recording, Reporting and Printing the Cromwellian ‘Kingship Debates’ of 1657. Summary: This article explores the problem of recovering early modern utterances by focusing upon the issue of how the ‘kingship debates’ of 1657 between Oliver Cromwell and a committee of ninety-nine MPs came to be recorded, reported and printed. Specifically, it investigates the two key records of the kingship debates which, despite being well known to scholars, have extremely shady origins. Not only does this article demonstrate the probable origins of both sources, by identifying the previously unknown scribe of one of them it also points to the possible relationship between the two. It also questions whether the nature of the surviving sources has exacerbated certain interpretations about the kingship debates and their outcome. To hear Oliver Cromwell speak could be an infuriating experience. Those members of the committee of ninety-nine MPs that filed out of Whitehall on 20 April 1657, after their fourth meeting with Cromwell in little over a week, would certainly have thought so. Appointed by the second Protectorate Parliament to convince him to accept their offer of kingship, the members of the committee hoped for a direct and positive answer from the Lord Protector. They had none. According to the parliament’s diarist, and member of the committee, Thomas Burton, they received from Cromwell ‘nothing but a dark speech, more promiscuous then before’ and returned thoroughly ‘unsatisfyed’.1 Historians of the Protectorate must share Burton’s frustrations in their struggle to penetrate Cromwell’s utterances. Yet, while Burton and his fellow MPs had the pleasure (or agony) of listening to Cromwell directly the historian must work from what are, at best, ear-witness accounts.

Valentine Walton It’s our duty to sympathize in all mercies; that we may praise the Lord together in chastisements or trials, that so we may sorrow together. Truly England and the Church of God hath had a great favor from the Lord in this great victory given unto us, such as the like never was since this war began. It had all the evidences of an absolute victory obtained by the Lord’s blessing upon the godly party principally. We never charged but we routed the enemy. The left wing, which I commanded, being our own horse, saving a few Scots in our rear, beat all the prince’s [Rupert’s] horse. God made them as stubble to our swords; we charged their regiments of foot with our horse, routed all we charged. The particulars I cannot relate now, but I believe, of twenty thousand the prince hath not four thousand left. Give glory, all the glory, to God. Sir, God hath taken away your eldest son by a cannon-shot. It brake his leg. We were necessitated to have it cut off, whereof he died. Sir, you know my trials this way, but the Lord supported me with this: that the Lord took him into the happiness we all pant after and live for. Works of Art in the Stranger’s Dining Room Stranger’s Dining Room The room was originally a Peers’ Committee Room which was changed to a dining room in around 1 2 3 1867. By 1902 it had become the Entrance Irish Member’s Dining room, by 1914 Member’s Smoking Room and at some point between 1914 and 1938 it had become the Stranger’s Dining Room. In 2006 the dining room was 9 refurbished, wallpaper and carpet to A W N Pugin’s designs were reinstated, having been replaced over the years with incorrect designs. River Tests were also made on the plainly 4 Thames painted ceiling and original stencil patterns were discovered beneath, a rose and floral pattern in coral and green designed by Pugin and applied 8 by J G Crace and Son. The room is called Stranger’s Dining room as ‘Stranger’s’ was the term originally used to describe Entrance anyone who was not a Member of 7 6 5 Parliament, and this was one of the few rooms where MPs could bring guests to eat.
