Evidence stacks up that rocky outcrop was home to earliest Pictish fort 28 July 2015 Dr Noble, a Senior Lecturer in archaeology at the University of Aberdeen, described the sea stack as an 'exceptional archaeological find' and said consistency across the samples dated meant that they could be 'confident it was one of the earliest fortified sites occupied by Picts'. He said: "This is the most extreme archaeology I've ever done. The site can only be accessed using ropes at low tide and having never climbed before, it was quite hair-raising. But the challenge of getting to the top was soon forgotten as we began to make significant discoveries. Location Dunnottar House is situated in the heart of Dunnottar Woods, about 10 to 15 minutes walk from Stonehaven town centre and not far from Dunnottar Castle.

By ALEX. BREMNER, M.A., D.Sc, F.R.S.E. (Read 17th January, 1917.) THIS paper is a contribution towards the solution of one of the problems in the glacial geology of north-east Scotland, mentioned in a paper published in our Transactions (vol. x. p. 334), viz., the relations in space and time of the ice that distributed the red clays from Strathmore along the coasts of Kincardineshire and Aberdeenshire with that which brought the Upper Grey Boulder Clay. The latter we shall speak of in this paper as the Dee Valley Ice : the former we may call as before the Strath more Ice. In addition the paper may be interesting per se as a contribu tion to the study of the surface geology of a district to the solid geology of part of which special attention has been called in recent years. The area dealt with is bounded by the sea and a line drawn due west from Portlethen village to the Dee watershed, following the Dee watershed to the gap between Monluth and South Dennetys and passing thence southward to the Bervie Water at Milton of Dillivaird, along the Bervie to Drumlithie, and from that point straight back to the coast at Dunnottar Castle. History & Heritage 3 Day Itinerary Day 1 Today is castle day! If it is one thing that we have a lot of here in Aberdeenshire, it’s castles. There are more than you’d ever have time to explore on a visit to the area, so we’ve singled out two that you simply must go and see. The first is right on our doorstep and can actually be seen from our lodges – Dunnottar Castle. It may look a little familiar – it’s been used as the backdrop for Hollywood films including Hamlet starring Mel Gibson and Victor Frankenstein with James McAvoy and Daniel Radcliffe. On a side note, this cliff top fortress is said to the inspiration behind Disney’s animated movie Brave. The castle was the home of the Earls of Marischal and it has a rich and colourful history. It’s been visited by Mary Queen of Scots and James VI and in the 17th century Oliver Cromwell’s army laid siege to the castle for eight months. Surrender was made – but not before the Scottish Crown Jewels were smuggled out. Next, we’re heading inland to Royal Deeside and to a castle which some say is straight out of a fairy tale. Craigievar Castle near Alford is famed for its distinctive pink exterior and is one of the best preserved tower houses in Scotland. Built in 1626, it was a family home until the 1960s and houses an impressive collection of artefacts, art and armour. Day 2 Many people consider Aberdeen to be a modern city because it’s a powerhouse of the global energy industry, but it’s a place with deep heritage and traditions.
