Location Dunnottar House is situated in the heart of Dunnottar Woods, about 10 to 15 minutes walk from Stonehaven town centre and not far from Dunnottar Castle. Stonehaven is a charming fishing port and was traditionally a holiday resort. Just to the south are the dramatic ruins of Dunnottar Castle, a brooding medieval fortress perched on a rocky crag above the North Sea. Sheltering beneath the cliffs is the town’s picturesque harbour, where there is a museum and a seafood restaurant set in a 16th-century jail, as well as the historic Ship Inn and the Marine Hotel, which brews its own beers. The town hosts an annual real-ale festival in June. Along the bay are an award winning fish and chip shop and an Olympic-sized art deco open-air swimming pool where, in the summer, you can swim under the stars in water that is heated to a balmy 29 degrees. The Victorian town hall hosts gigs and cinema screenings, the town’s four schools are rated “very good” or “good”, and there is a cliff-top golf course and a busy yacht club. The oil capital of Aberdeen, with its theatres, universities and shopping centres is just 20 minutes away by train. History Dunnottar House, formerly the Manse of Dunnottar, dates from 1786 and is a large and impressive property, reflecting the historic importance of the Parish of Dunnottar. Over the years Dunnottar Castle played host to William Wallace, Mary Queen of Scots and King Charles II amongst many others and is steeped in the history of Scotland. The castle garrison fought off Cromwell’s army for months and saved the Scottish Crown Jewels which are now in Edinburgh Castle. The involvement of the castle and the Parish of Dunnottar in Scotland’s history inspired Sir Walter Scott to visit the area. He wrote the historical novel “Old Mortality”, which is held to be one of his best Waverley novels, whilst staying at Dunnottar House, having met “Old Mortality” in Dunnottar Churchyard. The property was used as a Church of Scotland manse until 1979 when it came into private ownership. The present owners purchased the house in 1985. The house is Category C listed.
