Digital Subscriber Line Introduction Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) technology is a modem technology that uses existing twisted-pair telephone lines to transport high-bandwidth data, such as multimedia and video, to service subscribers. The term xDSL covers a number of similar yet competing forms of DSL technologies, including ADSL, SDSL, HDSL, HDSL-2, G.SHDL, IDSL, and VDSL. xDSL is drawing significant attention from implementers and service providers because it promises to deliver high-bandwidth data rates to dispersed locations with relatively small changes to the existing telco infrastructure. xDSL services are dedicated, point-to-point, public network access over twisted-pair copper wire on the local loop (last mile) between a network service provider’s (NSP) central office and the customer site, or on local loops created either intrabuilding or intracampus. Currently, most DSL deployments are ADSL, mainly delivered to residential customers. This chapter focus mainly on defining ADSL. Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line (ADSL) technology is asymmetric. It allows more bandwidth downstream—from an NSP’s central office to the customer site—than upstream from the subscriber to the central office. This asymmetry, combined with always-on access (which eliminates call setup), makes ADSL ideal for Internet/intranet surfing, video-on-demand, and remote LAN access. Users of these applications typically download much more information than they send.

Typical Voice Network 2 THE ACCESS NETWORK • DSL is really an access technology, and the associated DSL equipment is deployed in the local access network. • The access network consists of the local loops and associated equipment that connects the service user location to the central office. • This network typically consists of cable bundles carrying thousands of twisted-wire pairs to feeder distribution interfaces (FDIs). Two primary ways traditionally to deal with long loops: • 1.Use loading coils to modify the electrical characteristics of the local loop, allowing better quality voice-frequency transmission over extended distances (typically greater than 18,000 feet). • Loading coils are not compatible with the higher frequency attributes of DSL transmissions and they must be removed before DSL-based services can be provisioned. 3 Two primary ways traditionally to deal with long loops • 2.     Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line (ADSL) Definition Asymmetric digital subscriber line (ADSL) is a new modem technology that converts existing twisted-pair telephone lines into access paths for high-speed communications of various sorts. Overview ADSL can transmit more than 6 Mbps to a subscriber—enough to provide Internet access, video-on-demand, and LAN access. In interactive mode it can transmit more than 640 kbps in both directions. This increases the existing access capacity by more than fifty-fold enabling the transformation of the existing public network. No longer is it limited to voice, text, and low-resolution graphics. It promises to be nothing less than an ubiquitous system that can provide multimedia (including full-motion video) to the entire country. ADSL can perform as indicated in Table 1. Table 1. A large portion of your business phone bill typically consists of monthly recurring charges that cover access costs. Examples of access include individual business lines, digital T-1 connections, or dedicated access lines to long distance companies. Analog The original and still prevalent technology used for local telephone telecommunications transmission. Analog signals are direct reproductions of sound waves. Voice conversations, computer data, and video can be sent via analog technology; however, digital technology can be more reliable, particularly at high bandwidths (speeds). The world is rapidly adapting digital as the new standard. Some modern digital phone equipment will not work with analog phone lines. Backbone The main connectivity device in a network. All systems that connect to the backbone can connect to each other. This does not prohibit systems from setting up separate arrangements to connect directly with each other, bypassing the backbone, for cost, performance, or security reasons. Bandwidth Capacity or volume inherent in every telecommunications line. For example, the standard business data line has a bandwidth capacity of 64 Kbps (kilobits per second), which is more than enough for a clear voice conversation. Higher bandwidths are needed for the transfer of more complicated information such as large amounts of computer data or video. Sometimes companies with high bandwidth demands need dedicated private lines to ensure that the whole bandwidth capacity is available to them at all times. A higher bandwidth rating means that data moves faster.

CARD DIALER - Automatic dialer and regular telephone combined in one desk-top unit. Phone numbers coded on plastic cards are inserted in the dialer slot for fast, accurate dialing or touch-tone entry of fixed data into a data processing system. CATHODE RAY TUBE (CRT) - A television-like picture tube used in visual display terminals.
