Friday, 18 March – Friday of Sorrows (Viernes De Dolores) • Celebrated Friday, 18 March – Friday of Sorrows (Viernes de Dolores) Celebrated on the Friday before Palm Sunday, it’s a solemn remembrance of the Seven Sorrows of Blessed Virgin Mary In countries like Mexico, Guatemala, Italy, Peru, Brazil, Spain, Malta, Nicaragua and the Philippines it is seen as the beginning of the Holy Week The feast concentrates on the emotional pain that the Passion of Christ caused to his mother, Virgin Mary who is venerated under the title Our Lady of Sorrows In some Spanish-speaking countries the day is also referred to as Council Friday, because of the choice of John 11:47-54 as the Gospel passage read in the Tridentine Mass on that day Like all Fridays in Lent, the day is of abstinence from meat In 1727, Pope Benedict XVIII extended this feast commemorating the sorrowful Virgin Mary to the whole of the Latin Church, until in 1960 it was reduced to the level of a commemoration. In 1969, the celebration was removed from the General Roman Calendar as a duplicate of the feast on 15 September Celebration of the feast in Malta, Spain, Mexico, Panama, Columbia, Peru, Guatemala and the Philippines incudes procession, public penance, mournful singing and the mortification of the flesh In Mexico and Nicaragua the faithful make small shrines of the Virgren de Dolor and decorate them with Christmas lights and perform street plays In Guatemala people make oversized flowerbeds on the road where the religious float will pass while being incensed by the crowd In the Philippines candle-lit religious floats carry a statue of Our Lady of Sorrows in procession through the streets, followed by the recitation of the life of Christ In Malta, penitents place multiple chains on their feet and walk varefoot on the public streets hiding their identity via a conical hat In Spain, the faithful shout praises to the float of the Sorrowful Virgin passing by, often accompanied by “Viva!”; the floats are preceded by a military parade and a mucical band In Italy, famous Baroque images made in the area of Naples are used Singing of Stabat Mater and candle-light vigils are other common activities The first altar to the Mater Dolorosa was set up in 1221 at the monastery of Schönau The Church of Our Lady of Sorrows (Igreja Nossa Senhora das Dores) in Porto Alegre, Brazil. It is the town’s oldest church, built in 1813 Regarded as the most famous in Spain during Holy Week processions, the Virgin of Hope of Macarena, shown in her sorrowful theme while wearing imperial regalia each Friday before Palm Sunday. In the Philippines, a famed colonial image of Nuestra Señora de la Soledad de Porta Vaga is another manifestation of the Sorrowful Virgin celebrated by devout Filipino Catholics. In the week before Good Friday, it is a tradition in at least some parts of Mexico to erect altars like the one above to honour Our Lady of Sorrows, whose small statue is at the top. Christ above in torment hangs, she beneath beholds the pangs of her dying glorious Son. Is there one who would not weep, whelmed in miseries so deep, Christ's dear Mother to behold? Can the human heart refrain from partaking in her pain, in that Mother's pain untold? For the sins of His own nation, She saw Jesus wracked with torment, All with scourges rent: She beheld her tender Child, Saw Him hang in desolation, Till His spirit forth He sent. O thou Mother! fount of love! Touch my spirit from above, make my heart with thine accord: Make me feel as thou hast felt; make my soul to glow and melt with the love of Christ my Lord. Holy Mother! pierce me through, in my heart each wound renew of my Savior crucified: Let me share with thee His pain, who for all my sins was slain, who for me in torments died. Let me mingle tears with thee, mourning Him who mourned for me, all the days that I may live: By the Cross with thee to stay, there with thee to weep and pray, is all I ask of thee to give. Virgin of all virgins blest!, Listen to my fond request: let me share thy grief divine; Let me, to my latest breath, in my body bear the death of that dying Son of thine. Wounded with His every wound, steep my soul till it hath swooned, in His very Blood away; Be to me, O Virgin, nigh, lest in flames I burn and die, in His awful Judgment Day. Characteristic of its celebration is the sequence of its processional parades, which are organized following the strict order of Jesus Christ Passion. And also the colorful cloaks, cowls and hoods the brothers wear, from which their popular nicknames come from:coloraos, capuchinos, moraos, blancos, negrosandcorbatos. FRIDAY OF SORROWS Significant is the Stations of the Cross organized for this day by Pasión Arch-confraternity as it is held at night and carrying torches that light up the stations of the 5 kilometers long itinerary. PALM SUNDAY On Palm Sunday at 11.30 in the morning the children procession known as "La Borriquilla" (the small donkey) takes place. Although the child section of Santísimo Cristo de la Columna y María Santísima de la Amargura brotherhood are the ones that parade, all the children in Daimiel are invited to take part. As well as the pace, the girls dressed like Samarians and carrying amphoras are also a characteristic of this procession. HOLY MONDAY, TUESDAY AND WEDNESDAY On Holy Sunday most of the brothers go to the Christ descend ceremony at Santa María church.     Religious Dates and Festivals 2018-2019 SEPTEMBER 29-OCTOBER 1, 2019 Rosh Hashanah (Judaism) Rosh Hashanah occurs on the first and second days of Tishri. In Hebrew, Rosh Hashanah means, literally, "head of the year" or "first of the year." Rosh Hashanah is commonly known as the Jewish New Year. This name is somewhat deceptive, because there is little similarity between Rosh Hashanah, one of the holiest days of the year, and the American midnight drinking bash and daytime football game. There is, however, one important similarity between the Jewish New Year and the American one: Many Americans use the New Year as a time to plan a better life, making "resolutions." Likewise, the Jewish New Year is a time to begin introspection, looking back at the mistakes of the past year and planning the changes to make in the new year. No work is permitted on Rosh Hashanah. Much of the day is spent in synagogue, where the regular daily liturgy is somewhat expanded. In fact, there is a special prayerbook called the machzor used for Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur because of the extensive liturgical changes for these holidays.     Our Lady of Good Counsel According to tradition, in the year 1467, in the midst of the festivities for the Feast of Saint Mark, the townfolk suddenly heard "exquisite music." A mysterious cloud was then said to have descended and obliterated an unfinished wall of the parish church. In front of the populace, the cloud dissipated and a beautiful fresco, no thicker than a carte-de-visite and no more than eighteen inches square, of the Virgin Mary and the Christ Child was revealed. It was widely believed that it had been miraculously transported from a church in Scutari, Albania. On November 17, 1682, Pope Innocent XI had the picture solemnly crowned. In 1753, Pope Benedict XIV established the Pious Union of Our Lady of Good Counsel. More than any other pope, Leo XIII, was deeply attached to this devotion. On April 22, 1903, that same Pope included the invocation "Mater boni consilii" in the Litany of Loreto. In 1939, Venerable Pope Pius XII placed his pontificate under the maternal care of Our Lady of Good Counsel and composed a prayer to her. Her feast is celebrated on April 26th. Our Lady of Aparecida Our Lady of Aparecida appeared to 3 fishermen in Brazil (Domingos Garcia, Filipe Pedroso, and João Alves) in October 1717. The fishermen prayed to Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception that God would grant a good catch. The fishermen, having a run of bad luck, cast their nets in the River Paraiba and dragged up a headless statue of the Virgin Mary. They also salvaged the head and, according to the legend, then netted plenty of fish.

Novem addresses the aftermath of Feminicide in Mexico. Feminicide is the killing of women because of their gender, in which outrageous acts of violence are visible. The term “feminicide” encompasses the imbalance of the gender power structures, and the corruption and neglect from the authorities surrounding these murders, manifesting in thousands of women and girls being killed each year. This attitude of neglect deeply affects the grieving processes of the families of the victims, hindering their possibility of overcoming the tragedy. The disruption of grieving processes is part of the aftermath of Feminicide, and I address it through textiles and materials rooted in my Mexican cultural background: rebozos crystallized with salt.
