Preferred Citation [Identification of item], Alan Copeland Photograph Archive, BANC PIC 2017.041, The Bancroft Library, University of California, Berkeley. Scope and Content Journalistic photographs of events and other newsworthy topics in Berkeley, Oakland, San Francisco and other locations in the Bay Area, California and beyond, taken chiefly in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Subjects include the formation and early years of People's Park (Berkeley, Calif.); individuals and activities associated with the Black Panther Party; various demonstrations (anti-Vietnam War, Third World Liberation Front, etc.) at the University of California, Berkeley and San Francisco State University; the kidnapping of Patty Hearst by the Symbionese Liberation Army; mining operations on the Black Mesa plateau and other environmental aspects of the U.S. Southwest; the Berkeley Barb newspaper and its editor Max Scheer; and Timothy Leary. Other topics, covered less extensively, include San Francisco politicians Harvey Milk, George Moscone and Dianne Feinstein; the California wine and oil industries; San Francisco observation of John Lennon's funeral; Mick Jagger and the Rolling Stones performing at Altamont Speedway; Copeland's personal life during the 1960s and 1970s; the Berkeley Tribe newspaper; and numerous others. PIC boxes 1-2 and AX box 1 contain prints chiefly pertaining to People's Park and other Berkeley topics, demonstrations in San Francisco, and various environmental and cultural aspects of Black Mesa and the U.S. Southwest. Among the prints are also portraits and unidentified subjects. Finding Aid to the Alan Copeland BANC PIC 2017.041 2 Photograph Archive Collection also includes Copeland's annotated mock-up for his 1969 book People's Park (fALB box 1), which includes works by numerous photographers in addition to Copeland. The mock-up lacks a few images but is otherwise nearly identical in visual content to that of the publication. Also includes an oversize copy negative depicting a protestor wearing a gas mask and wielding a tear gas canister (NEG portfolio 1), a matching print of which is likely present among the PIC and/or AX files.
