A little young to fully understand what was going on – I soon learnt! We were living in the white cottage just up from what is now Rostron Close in Chalk Hill. In those days it was attached to the Scaffolding (Great Britain) depot and an aunt and uncle lived next door and shared our pantry as a makeshift air raid shelter. This room had a door leading into the back yard. My first vivid memory was (I think) during the Blitz on Southampton. The most frightening incident was my father and uncle holding onto the door which was shaking from the blast of bombs.

CENTURY STYLE A review by Roy Andrews Regular visiting speaker Dr. Cheryl Butler produced another well researched talk at the November meeting based around the defences of Southampton. Prior to 1338, the town was defended on the two landward sides by a stone wall and double ditch but nothing on the two seaward sides. Consequently, in that year, and to launch the start of what became known as the 100 Years’ War, a fleet led by the French attacked the town from the sea and it took three days for the population to drive them off.

  • Planning Ahead, Working Together
Planning Ahead, Working Together Public consultation on Older People’s Mental Health Services within Southampton and South Hampshire This consultation document has been produced by NHS Hampshire, NHS Southampton City and Hampshire Partnership NHS Foundation Trust 1. Introduction 1.1 This consultation document has been produced by NHS Hampshire, NHS Southampton City and Hampshire Partnership NHS Foundation Trust, who are working together to develop older peoples mental health services that serve the populations of Southampton and South Hampshire. 1.2 It is the result of listening to what people have to say and describes part of a programme of service transformation that we see developing for older peoples mental health services over the next few years. 1.3 The importance of mental health to our overall well-being is recognised in national policies and by our colleagues locally in NHS organisations and Local Authorities. We want to make sure that our services are the best and that we exceed national standards for the quality and performance of our clinical care. 1.4 Our aim is to develop services which offer real choice and more control to the people who use them, allowing them to remain in their home, and supporting them to maintain independence and have a good quality of life. 1.5 This means beginning to change our existing services, moving from current in-patient bed- based services where there is now less demand, to focus on support in the community that meets the needs of the population now and in the future. 1.6 This public consultation describes proposals which have been developed by NHS Hampshire, NHS Southampton City and Hampshire Partnership NHS Foundation Trust.
