In Harms Way had eighteen movie roles, and several television appearances after having one cancerous lung and two ribs removed In Harms Way September 17, between this movie and his own death. The climactic battle with the Japanese fleet was staged mostly with model ships. Kirk Douglas thought that the special effects were poor and complained to Director Otto Preminger and the studio about it. He offered to re-stage the scenes In Harms Way his own expense using the special effects people who worked with him on Paths of Glory John Wayne was suffering from lung cancer, and by the end of the filming he was coughing up blood. Despite that, he continued to smoke up to six packs of cigarettes a day throughout the filming. Two months later, his entire left lung and several ribs were removed. The naval battle sequences were done with models that were so large in scale for the sake of greater detailthat they could be operated from the inside. This was John Wayne 's final black and white film. The U. There were several reasons put forward as to why he didn't stop to pick up the Captain and Executive Officer. He said that it was because it would have taken twenty minutes to stop from full speed, and then get back up to that. Kirk Douglas wrote that In Harms Way Wayne wanted him for the role of Eddington. He was surprised, as they did not know each other and did not socialize, and their political opinions were very different. Nonetheless, the collaboration was a success, and they costarred in The War Wagonand Wayne had a cameo, and his company, Batjac, was the first listed production company Douglas' production company, Bryna, was listed secondin Douglas' ode to Israel, Cast a Giant Shadow Kirk Douglas felt the battle at the end of the movie was ruined by the use of very obvious models. This was final World War II epic filmed in black and white. The escape of a destroyer from the Pearl Harbor attack with only junior officers aboard is based on the action of the U. Aylwin DD The story about being pursued out of the harbor by her captain is also In Harms Way on fact, but rather than a few hundred feet behind the Aylyin, the captain's launch came no closer than a thousand yards. John Wayne and Otto Preminger deliberately avoided discussing politics during filming. The film's title comes from a quote by John In Harms Way Jones: "I wish to have no connection with any ship that does not sail fast, for I intend to go in harm's way. According to John Huston's autobiography, this movie is the one that led Tom Tryon to abandon acting In Harms Way a career. He had already experienced producer and director Otto Preminger's wrath during filming of "The Cardinal"and was understandably apprehensive about their re- teaming. Preminger sensed as much, and instead of trying to reassure the agitated Tryon, first chewed him out for his fears in front of other cast members, then walked behind him and screamed "RELAX! He reportedly almost quit that day, but cast mates talked him out of it. Patricia Neal said, "I adored John Wayne. We got along fabulously! The first time we worked together, I didn't like him at all. But in Honolulu, he was a much happier man. At the end of the filming, the Executive Officer of the U. Little, received orders for his promotion from Commander In Harms Way Captain. John Wayne pinned the Captain's eagles he wore in the movie on the Executive Officer to promote him to Captain in the Navy. Many of the non-military costumes and hairstyles worn by the In Harms Way throughout the film were contemporary to the mid s period, during which the film In Harms Way made, rather than of the early s. This is particularly noticeable at the dance scene which opens it. Many of the extras in it were, in fact, active duty In Harms Way and their spouses assigned to In Harms Way commands in Oahu. Kirk Douglas accepted the second lead because his career had declined since Spartacus with the failure of Lonely Are the Brave and a badly received stage version of "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest". Pala Passage would become known as Ironbottom Sound because of the number of ships that would be sunk there in coming battles. The cruiser used for filming was the U. Paul CA According to John Wayne biographer Maurice Zolotowhe spoke of how Patricia Neal had matured as an actress and In Harms Way woman since they had acted opposite one another in Operation Pacific In the battle scene it is shown that a Japanese destroyer rams PT According to Navy battle records only one PT boat was ever rammed by the enemy. That was PT, the one commanded by John F. In Harms Way the movie was released, it was widely derided as an overlong attempt to emulate the success of From Here to Eternity The premise of this movie, and the novel that formed its basis, is that the In Harms Way would try to defend a strategic asset using their most powerful battleship afloat, the Yamato. But she turns tail and runs from the engagement at the last minute. Apparently the Japanese Officer in Tactical Command mistakenly believes he is about to engage In Harms Way enemy force several times larger than the actual, nearly spent force he confronts. In historical fact, the Yamato did turn tail and run from battle off Samar in October ofunder circumstances nearly identical to In Harms Way depicted in this story. In Harms Way USN, who commanded the force opposing that of which In Harms Way Yamato was a part. The film received extensive cooperation from the Department of Defense, especially the U. Navy and the U. Marine Corps. One of many problems encountered during production was that at the time of the filming latevery few ships in active Navy service resembled their World War II configuration. Paul CA still retained most of her wartime configuration and as a result she stood in for a couple of unnamed cruisers during the movieand an accompanying destroyer, U. Philip DDthat took on the role of U. Cassidy were extensively filmed on. Other U. Navy ships that participated included In Harms Way cruiser U. Braine DDU. O'Bannon DDU. Renshaw DDU. Additional smaller In Harms Way were provided in support, as well as an HU Albatross amphibious aircraft, even though said aircraft did not enter the In Harms Way. The HU likely substitutes for a PBY Catalina, of which no flyable examples were likely available for the film schedule. The fictional ship in the movie is a composite of several World War II cruisers. Salt Lake City was known as the "Swayback Maru". The ship in the movie, and in the novel, was based on a ship known as "Old Swayback". San Francisco was the flagship of a squadron of ships in the famous naval battle of November 12,in the Solomon Islands area. The fictional ship in the movie was also the flagship of a squadron of ships in an important naval battle.

The setting for this creepy classic is a traditionally spooky old house which is bought by an electronics company to house their new recording media research division. The building has been completely renovated apart from one room that the superstitious workmen have refused to enter. Of course computer programmers, Peter (Michael Bryant) and Jill (Jane Asher) are made of sterner stuff and investigate the room, finding nothing more scary than a few tins of pre-war spam and a letter to Santa from a young girl probably now long dead. Things get a bit more spooky though when the scientists knock down an old wood panel to discover a stone staircase. It is on this that the psychically susceptible Jill sees the ghost of a terrified 19th-century servant girl. Peter believes in what she has seen but treats it as a scientific problem. He thinks that the stone walls have acted like a kind of recording tape to keep replaying this traumatic event and determines to use this ghostly event to further his team’s research.

However, in past productions of the musical, alongside a troubling misogyny, I have seen a problematic colluding of queerness and fascism in the narrative arc of the drama. In choosing this piece as my Columbia University MFA Theatre Directing Thesis Production, my vision was to bring to this classic text a reading that re-sees queerness not as a metaphor for the seductive power of fascism but rather as a communal source of resistance in the face of catastrophic forces.
