DAVIS Mary Anning of Lyme Regis 19th Century Pioneer in British Palaeontology Ludwig Leichhardt, a 19th century German explorer noted in a letter, “… we had the pleasure of making the acquaintance of the Princess of Palaeontology, Miss Anning. She is a strong, energetic spinster of about 28 years of age, tanned and masculine in expression …” (Aurousseau, 1968). Gideon Mantell, a 19th century British palaeontologist, made a less flattering remark when he wrote in his journal, “… sallied out in quest of Mary An- ning, the geological lioness … we found her in a little dirt shop with hundreds of specimens piled around her in the greatest disorder. She, the presiding Deity, a prim, pedantic vinegar looking female; shred, and rather satirical in her conversation” (Curwin, 1940). The portrait is now in the Earth Sciences Library, British Museum of Natural History. A similar portrait in pastels by B.J.M. Donne, hangs in the entry hall of the Geological Society of London. -

Resume L'espece Acanthorhina jaekeli Fraas est redecrite en detail a partir de l'unique specimen connu, provenant du Toarcien d'Holzmaden, et attribue ä la Familie des Myriacanthidae. Le neurocräne presente un rostre alonge dont ses zones ventrale et dorsale montrent un cartilage differencie. Trois paires de plaques dermiques tuberculees sont presentes: une a l'angle inferieur de la mandi- bule, une deuxieme se localise en position anterodorsale par rapport a l'orbite, et la derniere se situait vraisembablement en arriere de l'orbite. L'epine dorsale est courbee et tuberculee sur les deux tiers proximaux de sa longueur. Des denticules sont presents sur le tiers distal des bords pos- terieurs de l'epine. La ceinture pectorale bifurque ventralement. La dentition comprends: a la mächoire inferieure une plaque dentaire symphysaire arquee et un paire de plaques dentaires pos- terieures; a la mächoire superieure trois paires de plaques dentaires. -

The possible rela- tionships of the chordates and deuterostomes to other metazoans are dis- cussed in Halanych (2004). He restricts the taxon of deuterostomes to the chordates and their proposed immediate sister group, a taxon comprising the hemichordates, echinoderms, and the wormlike Xenoturbella. The phylum Chordata has been used by most recent workers to encompass members of the subphyla Urochordata (tunicates or sea-squirts), Cephalochordata (lancelets), and Craniata (fishes, amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals). The Cephalochordata and Craniata form a mono- phyletic group (e.g., Cameron et al., 2000; Halanych, 2004). Much disagree- ment exists concerning the interrelationships and classification of the Chordata, and the inclusion of the urochordates as sister to the cephalochor- dates and craniates is not as broadly held as the sister-group relationship of cephalochordates and craniates (Halanych, 2004). Many excitingCOPYRIGHTED fossil finds in recent years MATERIAL reveal what the first fishes may have looked like, and these finds push the fossil record of fishes back into the early Cambrian, far further back than previously known. There is still much difference of opinion on the phylogenetic position of these new Cambrian species, and many new discoveries and changes in early fish systematics may be expected over the next decade. As noted by Halanych (2004), D.-G. (D.) Shu and collaborators have discovered fossil ascidians (e.g., Cheungkongella), cephalochordate-like yunnanozoans (Haikouella and Yunnanozoon), and jaw- less craniates (Myllokunmingia, and its junior synonym Haikouichthys) over the 15 06_250317 part1-3.qxd 12/13/05 7:32 PM Page 16 16 Fishes of the World last few years that push the origins of these three major taxa at least into the Lower Cambrian (approximately 530–540 million years ago). -

REITZELS FORLAG BIANCO LUNOS BOGTRYKKEHI A/S 1972 A map has been compiled on the scale of 1:1 million showing Permian and Mesozoic rocks of East Greenland from 70° to 77° north latitude. The accompanying text briefly summarizes the existing knowledge of these rocks. Lower Permian (not shown on the map) is represented by non-marine formations which lie conformably on Upper Carboniferous. Upper Permian lies unconformably on Lower Permian and earlier rocks with a basal conglomerate. The remaining Upper Permian rocks include marine strata with arich fauna. The lowest Triassic beds are marine with an abundant fauna which enables six ammonoid zones to be recognized. The rest of the Trias is almost entirely non marine, a mainly clastic redbed sequence with some evaporites. The Trias closes with deltaic beds with an abundant flora, which span the interval from Rhaetian to earliest Jurassic (Hettangian). The Jurassic succession is incomplete. The Middle Jurassic has yielded important ammonite faunas which make it a zonal standard for the boreal Jurassic, very differ ent from that of Europe. Upper Jurassic rocks, mainly Upper Oxfordian and Lower Kimmeridgian, are widespread. Still higher Jurassic rocks are preserved in Milne Land. Lowest Cretaceous (Berriasian and Yalanginian) rocks have yielded important faunas, which in the Valanginian include both North European and Mediterranean elements. -

ABSTRACT - Fu1 and Fu2 faunas, represented by the spathic lumachella horizons of the Grilli Quarry (Furlo Pass, Umbria- Marche Apennines), contain two highly biodiversified assemblages. They follow chronologically the “Venturi ’78” bed from the Pallareto Quarry (Catriceras catriense bioevent), which is considered the first post-Sinemurian record to be found in the Apennines: as a whole, these three faunas characterize the lower part of the Early Pliensbachian (Carixian) in our area. The material collected at the Furlo Pass enabled us to recognize an unexpected wealth of forms, including some completely new taxa. Within the Psiloceratida (order comprising the taxa traditionally placed in the Lytoceratina and Ammonitina), the new family Holcolytoceratidae is proposed here for Audaxlytoceras together with Holcolytoceras. Among the Eoderoceratoidea, we describe the new species Omoderoceras latispira (a Paramicroderoceratinae with monospinate inner stage, formerly found in the “Venturi ’78” bed), and we note the discovery of the first Apennine ammonoid ascribable to Apoderoceras. -

On Stomatopora Antiqua, Haime, and Its Related Liassic Fobms
'258 W. D. Lang—On Stomatopora antiqua. V.—ON STOMATOPORA ANTIQUA, HAIME, AND ITS RELATED LIASSIC FOBMS. By W. D. LANG, M.A., F.Z.S., F.G.S., of the British Museum (Natural History). (WITH A FOLDING TABLE I AND PLATE XIV.) &TOMATOPOBA ANTIQUA was first described and figured by Haime1 from specimens occurring on Oryphaa in the Lower Lias of France. I have not been able to find any record of an English specimen except that in the Survey memoir on the Lias of England and Wales.2 But recently several specimens of a Stomatopora resembling S. antiqua, Haime, were found in the collection of the late Mr. E. F. Tomes. The fact that all the specimens were encrusting Gryphaa is remarkable; for though many hundred specimens of various molluscs from the Lower Lias were searched, and of these all sorts of oysters with especial care, Gryphcea was the only form encrusted by Stomatopora. In the British Museum catalogue3 S. antiqua, Haime, is made a synonym of S. dichotoma (Latnouroux),4 a Bradfordian form. But an examination of the material alluded to, of which more than a dozen zoaria were sufficiently well preserved to admit of measurements of portions of them after the method described in a former number,5 has shown not only that this form is a distinct species, but that it exhibits features which make it probable that it is more primitive than any other Jurassic Stomatopora as yet described. Even Gregory included it with some hesitation in 8. dichotoma, for in writing of that species he says6: " The one [form] in regard to which I feel most doubt is S. -
