In addition, I would like to thank Benjamin Beede for his generosity in supplying abalone larvae and his assistance with culturing the larvae. I would also like to acknowledge Drs. Herb Waite, Ali Miserez, Amy Moran, Mary Sewell and Richard Strathmann for their contributions. Dr. Waite provided access to critical equipment used in this dissertation and Dr. Ali Miserez kindly devoted his time to helping me with the development and analysis of the nanoindentation measurements. Drs. Amy Moran, Mary Sewell and Richard Strathmann provided important input and suggestions regarding the biology of invertebrate larval development. Finally I wish to acknowledge the love and support from my family on this journey. My parents, Steve and Pam Zippay, have encouraged my passion for marine science ever since I was young and have taught me to pursue my dreams.
