THE 150th COMMENCEMENT EXERCISES FOR THE AWARDING OF DEGREES احتفال التخرج الخمسون بعد المئة
The 150th Commencement Exercises The commencement exercises will be held on the Green Field over two consecutive days.
The Honorary Doctorate and Graduate Commencement Ceremony will take place on Friday, May 31, 2019 at 8:00 pm.
The Undergraduate Commencement Ceremony will be held on Saturday, June 1, 2019 at 8:00 pm.
During the Honorary Doctorate and Graduate Commencement Ceremony, and the Undergraduate Commencement Ceremony, and due to the high number of graduating students, empty diploma jackets will be distributed to ensure the prompt and smooth flow of the ceremony.
For those who need to retrieve their diplomas on the nights of the Honorary Doctorate and Graduate Commencement Ceremony, and the Undergraduate Commencement Ceremony, the Office of the Registrar at College Hall will remain open on both days until 12:00 am to distribute them.
However, we strongly urge all students remaining in Lebanon after commencement weekend to visit the Office of the Registrar during regular working hours starting Monday, June 3, 2019 to retrieve their diplomas. Each student will be required to present a photo ID and will be asked to sign upon receipt of the diploma. Students are also requested to bring their certificate jackets.
This booklet is sent for printing before the University Senate vote. Slight changes may occur before commencement and may not be included in the booklet.
The American University of Beirut is a tobacco-free campus. Please refrain from smoking.

ُيقام حفل ّج التخرعلى الملعب األخضر الكبير في الجامعة األميركية في بيروت خالل يومين متتاليين.
في اليوم األول، الجمعة ٣١ أيار ٢٠١9 عند الثامنة ًمساء، ُيحتفل بمنح الدكتوراه ّالفخرية وتخريج ّطالب الدراسات العليا.
في اليوم الثاني، السبت 1 حزيران ٢٠١9 عند الثامنة ًمساء، ُيحتفل بتخريج ّطالب البكالوريوس.
خالل احتفال شهادات الدكتوراه الفخرية واحتفال تخرج طالب الدراسات العليا، واحتفال تخرج طالب البكالوريوس، وبسبب ارتفاع عدد المتخرجين، سيتم توزيع حافظات شهادة فارغة لضمان االنسياب السريع والسلس لالحتفال.
بالنسبة ألولئك الذين يحتاجون الستالم شهاداتهم في ليلة احتفال الدكتوراه الفخرية وتخرج طالب الدراسات العليا، وفي ليلة احتفال تخرج طالب البكالوريوس، سيظل مكتب التسجيل في مبنى كولدج هول ً امفتوح في كال اليومين حتى الساعة 12:00 منتصف الليل ليقوم بتسليم الشهادات.
نناشد ّالطالب الذين سيبقون في لبنان بعد احتفال ّتخرجهم أن ّيتقدموا إلى مكتب التسجيل ضمن الدوام العادي ًابتداء من يوم اإلثنين 3 حزيران 2019 من أجل سحب شهاداتهم. ًوبناء عليه ُيطلب من كل طالب إبراز هوية ّتعرف به وتحمل صورة له، كما ُيطلب من الطالب التوقيع عند ّتسلمهم شهاداتهم. ُيرجى من الطالب إحضار أغلفة الشهادات التي ّتسلموها خالل احتفال ّالتخرج.
ُيرسل هذا ّالكتيب ً عادةإلى الطباعة قبل تصويت مجلس الجامعة، لذا قد ال تذكر فيه أي تعديالت قد تطرأ على المحتوى.

The 150th Commencement Exercises for the Awarding of Degrees 9 A Bold Vision for AUB: Vision 2030 President Fadlo R. Khuri has laid out an inspiring—and bold—vision to make AUB “a globally unique institution of higher education whose community of scholars and practitioners embody integral service, teaching, and research, all of whom are dedicated to improving the human condition.” His vision is of a university that is defined by its liberal arts ethos in education, excellence in research, compassionate medical care, and an abiding commitment to Lebanon and the Arab world.
Students are at the heart of Vision 2030. AUB is strengthening its undergraduate education curriculum and student support services, putting even more emphasis on the liberal arts, and introducing a completely new general education program emphasizing the humanities, technology, and service. The university is also investing in its campus facilities so that faculty and students have the tools and resources they need for innovative research. In addition to renovating some of the legacy buildings on upper campus, AUB is also planning to build new, state-of the-art facilities.
AUB has launched BOLDLY AUB: The Campaign to Lead, Innovate, and Serve, a five-year $650 million fundraising campaign, to support Vision 2030 and to secure the resources we need to continue to Lead, Innovate, and Serve the peoples of the Middle East and beyond for generations to come.

لقد وضع الرئيس فضلو خوري رؤية ملهمة وجريئة لجعل الجامعة األميركية في بيروت "مؤسسة عالمية فريدة من نوعها للتعليم العالي، ّوتجسد ُأسرتها من العلماء والمعالجين الخدمة المتكاملة، والتعليم، والبحوث، وكلها ّموجهة لتحسين حالة البشر". إن رؤيته هذه هي لجامعة ّتؤطرها روحيتها الليبرالية في التعليم، ّوالممتازية في األبحاث والرعاية الطبية الرؤوفة، وااللتزام الثابت بلبنان والعالم العربي.

The 150th Commencement Exercises for the Awarding of Degrees 11 Honorary Doctorate Recipients Honorary doctoral degrees have been awarded occasionally by the American University of Beirut since 1890. In 2003, the tradition resumed after a long hiatus. Since then, honorary doctorates of humane letters have been awarded each year to individuals who are distinguished in specific fields and whose achievements reflect the ideals and mission of this university.
The following have been awarded honorary doctorates of humane letters for the year 2019:
Hanan al-Shaykh One of the most acclaimed award-winning writers in the contemporary Arab world, Hanan al-Shaykh is a Lebanese novelist whose work has been translated into 21 languages and published around the world. Commended by many, including Edward Said and Salman Rushdie, she is the author of eight novels and a collection of short stories and plays.
Hagop Kantarjian (BS ’75, MD ’79) A world leader in leukemia research and treatment, Hagop Kantarjian heads the largest leukemia practice in the US. He is widely acclaimed as one of the most productive clinical translational cancer researchers of our time and holds the Samsung Distinguished Leukemia Chair in Cancer Medicine at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center.
Reeta Roy President and CEO of the Mastercard Foundation, Reeta Roy is an award-winning advocate for the world’s most vulnerable through the creation of educational and economic opportunities. Today, the foundation is one of the world’s largest, with $26 billion in assets and programs that have improved the lives of 33 million people and their families.
Fawwaz Ulaby (BS ’64) A pioneer in the area of radar remote sensing, Fawwaz Ulaby’s career has been marked by cutting-edge innovations and discoveries that have changed how we view the world. An inspirational teacher and mentor, he is the Emmett Leith Distinguished University Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at the University of Michigan.

منحت الجامعة األميركية في بيروت شهادة الدكتوراه الفخرية من حين آلخر منذ عام 1890. وبعد توقف طويل، استؤنف هذا التقليد عام 2003، دأبت بعده الجامعة ًسنويا خالل حفل التخرج على منح الدكتوراه الفخرية في اإلنسانيات لعدد من األفراد المتميزين في حقول اختصاصهم، والذين ّتجسد إنجازاتهم قيم الجامعة ورسالتها.
وفي ما يلي نبذة عن كل من ّالمكرمين بالدكتوراه الفخرية هذا العام:
حنان الشيخ حنان الشيخ هي من األكثر ّمحط ًا لإلعجاب بين ُالك ّتاب الحائزين على جوائز في العالم العربي المعاصر، ُوترجمت أعمالها إلى إحدى وعشرين لغة ُونشرت في جميع أنحاء العالم. وقد أثنى عليها الكثيرون، بمن فيهم إدوارد سعيد وسلمان رشدي. وهي وضعت ثماني روايات ومجموعة من القصص ّوالمسرحيات القصيرة.
هاغوب قنطرجيان )بكالوريوس علوم 1975 ودكتوراه في الطب 1979( في مجال أبحاث وعالج اللوكيميا. ويرأس أكبر وحدة عالجية لسرطان الدم في الواليات المتحدة. وهو مشهور على نطاق واسع بأنه أحد الباحثين المعالجين ّالمتعددي ّالتخصصات األكثر انتاجية في مجال السرطان في عصرنا. وهو أستاذ كرسي سامسونغ ّالمميز في اللوكيميا في طب السرطان في مركز أندرسون للسرطان بجامعة تكساس.
ريتا روي ريتا روي هي الرئيسة والمديرة التنفيذية لمؤسسة ماستركارد، وهي حصلت على جوائز ُكم ِناصرة ألضعف ضعفاء العالم عبر إيجادها إلمكانات تعليمية واقتصادية لهم. ّوالمؤسسة اليوم هي من أكبر ّالمؤسسات في العالم مع أصول وبرامج بقيمة ُ ٢٦ مليار دوالر ّحسنت حياة 33 مليون شخص مع أ َس ِرهم.
فواز ُالعلبي )بكالوريوس علوم 1964( فواز ُالعلبي رائد في مجال االستشعار عن ُب ْعد بالرادار. ّوتميزت مسيرته بابتكارات واكتشافات باهرة ّغيرت ّكيفية رؤيتنا للعالم. وهو ّمعلم ُومرشد ُم ِلهم، وهو أستاذ رتبة إيميت ليث ّالمتميز في الهندسة الكهربائية وعلوم الكمبيوتر في جامعة ميشيغان.

I do solemnly pledge before my teachers, and all those present, to be true to this oath:
I will be loyal to the ideals of the profession of medicine and its tradition of service to all human beings.
I will care for my fellow human beings with compassion, empathy, and kindness.
I will follow that treatment which according to my ability and judgment I consider for the benefit of patients, while respecting their choices and beliefs.
I will abstain from whatever is deleterious and mischievous and will not perform any medical procedure for criminal purposes.
In the presence of epidemics or other danger, I will not allow fear or concern for personal harm to turn me from my duty.

I will strive always to disseminate what professional knowledge I acquire. And I will fully accept my responsibility for the instruction of younger members of my profession.
