The city of Jezzine he city of Jezzine witnessed a fierce electoral battle in the municipal and ikhtiariah elections, as it did during the TJune 2009 parliamentary elections. The current elections were seen as extension to the first electoral battle, with the main difference being that the previous polls took place at the level of the qada’a of Jezzine, with the influence that the confessional structure of the voters, notably the Shia’a, had on the outcome. This conflict between ‘myth’ and ‘intellect’ is as old as humanity and goes on today as much as it did in ancient times. But instead of gods, we now believe in vitamins, herbs, supplements, and natural remedies. “Caterpillars can’t fly” tells the story of a lonely caterpillar that is made fun of by other insects because she can’t fly. However, she knew better…

The book can be read with preschoolers children as the child follows by looking at the ill. It is also recommended for elementary students at early reading stages. The parent can read the left-side pages while the child reads the simplified version on the right side. Children can also enjoy reading the left side of the book at later stages when they can read full sentences.

For a more interactive approach, parents can show the children a picture and ask them what they think is happening or will happen next. After that, the text (on the left) corresponding to the picture is read to the children. Then the right text corresponding to the left one is read while pointing at the words. Finally, the story is read again with the children trying to read along.

*“Caterpillars can’t fly” is part of the collection “a story to share” published by Ladybird. It was written by Judith Nicholls and illustrated by Cecilia Johansson.
