A rare experience for our club sailing events for certain! The afternoon turned out to be a very cozy social event with a perfectly tapped keg of Lager enjoyed by around 35 guests! Dinner was served early and we all feasted on Lasagna, Burgers and Pizza and plenty of sides. We also hosted a handful of evacuees from North Carolina as Hurricane Matthew pounded the East Coast and provided the shifty 15-20+ mph breeze. A handful of youngsters enjoyed a water balloon launcher and large target in the yard below the clubhouse for an all-around entertaining evening. The kids really enjoyed the prizes and activities provided by West Marine! Our racers and guest adults also enjoyed the Vols game and an overly intense final few minutes which ultimately left Vol fans with an upset. Not enough boats would attempt the Sunday start and the event came to a close. A great time was had by all! (except perhaps one who had boat repairs to look forward to!) 1st Place– John Tyner 2nd Place– Jeff Gamey 3rd Place– Rodney Meryweather Photos courtesy of Ted Piehl and Maureen Murphy November 2016 No. 512 3 The Nina and Pinta sail to Knoxville Two ships have sailed around the world to take on a larger scale so more people could be families on a blast from the historical past, all the accommodated. way to 1492. Ann Zimmerman November 2016 No. 512 5 Holder 20 Nationals & Fall Regatta Note From The PRO Special thanks to a host of CYC race committee members who stepped up big time during the weekend of Oct. 21-23, as the club hosted its annual Fall Regatta, as well as the Holder 20 National Championships. John Sullivan, Jeff Stichler, Budd Terwilliger, Gus Floodquist and Linda Smithson worked the Friday Holder races. Bud also brought his powerboat to help with setting marks, since the club's mark boat is out of commission. After learning the Holder regatta also needed a powerboat on Saturday, Budd volunteered to come back to help the assigned crew that included Bob Hunt, Tom Grove and Brian Nicholson. Philip Spurlin also pitched in at the last moment, as did new members John and Kellie Mzik. Philip volunteered to be the PRO for the CYC Fall Regatta both Saturday and Sunday. Tom also skippered his boat to help set Holder marks. Both regattas wrapped up Sunday with Tommy Northcutt and Marta Nagy joining Bob and Philip. Chuck Meyer also helped with the Fall Regatta wrap-up. Both regattas enjoyed great wind throughout, so all the crews were kept busy, but were well up to the task. Congrats and thanks for jobs well done! R. G. Smithson And The Results!!!! November 2016 No. 512 9 Holder 20 Nationals Ground Crew The event was no doubt a great success! But, it couldn’t have happened without LOTS of planning, organizing, vision, attention to detail, dedication and HARD WORK! IF ANYONE was omitted in the acknowledgments, PLEASE send Lauren an email, and this grave oversight will be remedied in next month’s Luff Letter!!! The Architects! John Storey was regatta chairman and prime instigator of the event. He was the primary link to the Association and the northern fleets. He also arranged the trophies. Don Busby was registrar and handled all of the web site registration details. Rick Gloeckler handled most of the volunteers, especially the Fun Sailors Group. And, Rick, along with Mike Brown, helped Catherine set up the round tables in the clubhouse. John Tyner was the liaison to the southern Holder fleets. Jeff Gamey handled t-shirts, logistics, finances and was party whip, harassing people to follow up and get things done! Breakfast and Lunch Crew! “It was a great weekend! Not all of the sailors signed up for the breakfast and lunch meal deal, but those that did, I assure you, ate well. We went through 25 lbs of meat, dozens upon dozens of eggs - and 80 giant cinnamon rolls! I had a great time working hard with Jodi Busby, who, among her many, many cheerful talents, makes a heck of a good apple oatmeal! Our other help in the kitchen came from Dave Roberts, who just showed up on Saturday morning and wanted to be helpful! What a guy! Dave had lots of great stories to tell and made sure everything went smoothly. Of course, we have to thank Girl Scout Troop 21101 for making and donating all those cinnamon rolls! Between the Tyners and the Busbys, there were always kids around to help, too. We all pulled together and made some great memories in a wonderful regatta!” Jane Tyner Friday Night Dinner Crew! Photos courtesy of Lauren Ballatin On Friday night, attendees were treated to a yummy dinner provided by Holy Smokin’ BBQ, while DJ Bob Morris filled the air with music! In addition to other members mentioned throughout, these folks get a warm THANK YOU, having worked Thursday for Set Up, Friday & Saturday and Tear Down Sunday.
