C01.qxd 8/18/08 14:44 Page 1 Introduction to the 1645 Volume: Poems of Mr. John Milton In 1645, Milton published most but not all of the poems he had composed by that date. The publisher Humphrey Moseley had been bringing out volumes of lyric poetry by royalist poets such as Edmund Waller, and it was likely, as he claims in the intro- duction to the volume, that he approached Milton and encouraged him to publish his verse. Moseley also arranged for the engraved portrait of Milton by William Marshall (see Figure 1), beneath which Milton, who considered the engraving unflattering, placed a witty Greek epigram ridiculing it in a language neither Marshall nor Moseley under- stood. Unlike most contemporary poets, Milton neither wrote a preface, solicited commendatory poems, nor acknowledged a patron. He organized his volume more or less chronologically, thus displaying his poetic development, but also carefully grouped together poems of similar themes and genres. With the Latin tag from Virgil’s Eclogues on the title page (“Baccare frontem / Cingite, ne vati noceat mala lingua futuro” – “Bind my forehead with foxglove, lest evil tongues harm the future Bard”), he promises future poems on even greater themes. In the Latin ode sent with a replacement copy of the volume to John Rouse, librar- ian of the Bodleian Library at Oxford, Milton describes the 1645 volume as a “twin book, rejoicing in a single cover, but with a double title page.” The first section of the volume presents his vernacular poems (mostly in English, but also including a mini-sonnet sequence in Italian), and concludes with A MASK Presented At LUDLOW- Castle. -

About the Author Milton ranks among the greatest poets of the English language. He is best known for the epic poem Paradise Lost (1667), but he also wrote prose works on history, religion, and contemporary politics. Although his academic talents marked him for a career in the Anglican church, Milton turned away from the Church of England at an early age and was a consistent supporter of the Puritan cause. He spent most of his life in academia or as a civil servant working for the Puritan Commonwealth. About the Book An edition based upon Sir Richard Jebb’s lectures at Cambridge in 1872, with extensive notes and commentaries on this famous work. Milton’s famous defence of freedom of speech. It was a protest against Parliament’s ordinance to further restrict the freedom of print. Milton issued his oration in an unlicensed form and courageously put his own name, but not that of his printer, on the cover. The Edition Used Areopagitica, with a Commentary by Sir Richard C. [ 5 ] Bitter constraint, and sad occasion dear, Compels me to disturb your season due: For Lycidas is dead, dead ere his prime, Young Lycidas, and hath not left his peer: Who would not sing for Lycidas? he knew [ 10 ] Himself to sing, and build the lofty rhyme. MILTON'S IMAGE AND POETICS OF HUMANITY Walter Gardner Campbell Salem, Virginia B.A., Wake Forest University, 1979 M.A., University of Virginia, 1982 A Dissertation Presented to the Graduate Faculty of the University of Virginia in Candidacy for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy Department of English University of Virginia May, 1992 i Copyright by Walter Gardner Campbell All rights reserved May, 1992 ii Milton's Image and Poetics of Humanity A Dissertation by Walter Gardner Campbell supervised by James Nohrnberg and Gordon Braden ABSTRACT Milton's image of humanity is a poetics of humanity: a dynamic, dialogic image that multiplies and explores what Nicolas of Cusa calls "conjectural otherness," a poetics fully responsive to the pathos and ironic com plexities of human existence. Critics tend to dismiss Milton's image of humanity as an inferior element of his poetic achievement, usually because they force Milton's texts into a premature or inadequate univocality. In fact, however, an insistent binarism of emphatic alterity, an agonizing, transformative approach of opposites, per vades and characterizes Milton's work. I find four inter pretive analogues of Milton's image of humanity in Blake's "contraries," Kierkegaard's revision of Socrates, Valesio's rhetorics, and Bakhtin's dialogics. L'Allegro and Il Penseroso, two strenuously opposed "companions," are the first extended examples of Milton's image of humanity. Their exaggerated opposition is an exercise neither in renunciation nor in static synthesis, but instead a piercing counterpoint, a music of opposition and alterity sounding within and between them. A confrontational dialogic also characterizes Satan's progress in Paradise Lost. -

REVIEWS 129 Theresa DiPasquale. Refiguring the Sacred Feminine: The Poems of John Donne, Aemilia Lanyer, and John Milton. Pittsburgh: Duquesne University Press, 2008. xiii + 392 pp. $60.00. Review by JUDITH SCHERER HERZ, CONCORDIA UNIVERSITY, MONTREAL. Concentrating on the figure of Wisdom inProverbs , the Song of Solo- mon, the deutero-canonical Ecclesiasticus and the Wisdom of Solomon, and, as well, on the figure of Mary inLuke and of Ecclesia in the Pauline epistles, this study examines crucial texts in the writings of Donne, Lanyer, and Milton as each “portrays the feminine as a reflection of the divine, and woman . as an agent of redemption or conduit of grace” (2). All three, it is argued, find in Mary an inspiration for their poetic practice. Indeed the entire study is founded on a deeply felt and nuanced Christian feminism. The aim is to examine each writer in the light cast by the exami- nation of the other two. To a degree this happens in the occasional phrase—like Milton, unlike Donne—but essentially these are three separate studies, which do not always, at least for this reader, usefully comment on each other. I say this in part, because while the Donne section works particularly well and is genuinely illuminating and of- ten original, the other two, especially the Milton section, make this thematic thread blur too many important differences. However, it is not the reviewer’s task to offer her Lanyer or her Milton but rather to lay out the argument on offer, and it is an important argument that carefully positions itself in relation to the scholarly and critical literature. -

I would also like to thank Dr. Tom Strawman for serving as second reader and for his continued support. iii ABSTRACT Milton’s A Maske Presented at Ludlow Castle, 1634 presents a young poet agonistically seeking balance between his classical poetic influences—particularly Ovid—and his Christian poetic purpose. The text presents Milton’s syncretism at a formative stage of development as he actively responds to the Medieval allegorical tradition of reading classical characters as Christian types. Endowing his pagan characters with grand classical and historical lineages, Milton engages in his own acts of poetic metamorphoses through his appropriations of antiquity. Disparate functions of Ovidian allusion suggest a psychic tension within the authorial persona and advance two Miltonic ideals: the virtuous poet and the poetry of virtue. In the “Lady” Alice, Milton constructs an Ovidian vates, or poet-priest, his virtuous poet who seeks a slutary relation to poetic influence and who, in her rhetoric, presents Milton’s metamorphosed virtue. In Sabrina, a Spenserian and Ovidian character, Milton baptismally initiates Alice into the world of syncretic Christian verse, the poetry of virtue.
