About the Author Milton ranks among the greatest poets of the English language. He is best known for the epic poem Paradise Lost (1667), but he also wrote prose works on history, religion, and contemporary politics. Although his academic talents marked him for a career in the Anglican church, Milton turned away from the Church of England at an early age and was a consistent supporter of the Puritan cause. He spent most of his life in academia or as a civil servant working for the Puritan Commonwealth. About the Book An edition based upon Sir Richard Jebb’s lectures at Cambridge in 1872, with extensive notes and commentaries on this famous work. Milton’s famous defence of freedom of speech. It was a protest against Parliament’s ordinance to further restrict the freedom of print. Milton issued his oration in an unlicensed form and courageously put his own name, but not that of his printer, on the cover. The Edition Used Areopagitica, with a Commentary by Sir Richard C. Jebb for the use of a course of lectures given at Cambridge in the Lent Term of I872. It is here re- printed by permission of Lady Jebb. A few trifling mis- prints have been corrected : otherwise, the commcntary is reproduced as it was originally printed. It may be conjectured that what attracted Sir R. C. Jebb specially to Areo_pagitica was its wealth of classical and historical allusions, and this, obviously, is the aspect of the treatise which received his particular attention. It was thought by the Syndics of the Cambridge University Press that the Commentary should be made accessible to students; and that it might be made more helpful, and be brought more directly into line with the other Pitt Press editions of Milton, if some notes were added on points of directly Miltonic interest, such as the language, parallel passages and so forth; and, at the request of the Syndics, Mr Verity has compiled a short appendix of comments, drawn mainly from his own editions o5 Milton published by the University Press, and has added the brief Life. We propose to summarise the main events of the three periods. John Milton was l×,rn ol_,December 9, _6o8, in London. He came, in his own words, exgenere ho_wsto. A Ia.milv of .Miltons had been settled in Oxfordshire since the reign of Elizabeth. The poet's father had been educated at an Oxford school, possibly as a chorister in one of the College choir-schools, and imbibing Anglican sympathies had con- formed to the E_tablished Church. For this he wa.s dis- inherited by his Roman Catholic father. He settled in London, foliowing the profession of scrivener. A scrivener combined the occupatmns of lawyer and law-stationer. 1t appears to have been a lucrative calhng ; certainly John Millon (the pc)el was named after the father) attained to easy circumstances He married about _6oo, and had six children, of whom several died young. The third child was the poet. The elder Milton was evidently a man of considerable culture, in particular an accomplished musician, and a composer whose madrigals were deemed worthy of being printed side by side x_th those o[ Byrd, Orlando Gibbons and other leading musicmns of the time. Realising, too, that in his son lay the promise and possihility of future great- ness, John Milton took the utmost pains to have the boy adequately educated; and the lines A d Pattern show that the ties of affection bet_veen father and child were of more than ordinary closeness. Milton was sent to St Paul's School about the year 1620. Here two influences, apart from those of ordinary school-life, may have attected him particularly. The headmaster was a good English scholar; he pubhshed a grammar containing many extracts from English poets, notably Spenser; it ib reasonable to assume that he had not a little to do with the encouragement and guidance of Milton's early taske for Enghsh poetry _. Also. thefounder of St Paul's School, Colet, had prescribed as part of the school-course the study of certmn earl?" Chnstaan writers, whose influence is stud to be directly traceable in Milton's poems and may in some cases have suggested his chome of sacred themes 2. While at St Paul's, Milton also had a tutor at home, Thomas Young, a Scotchman, afterwards an eminent Puritan divine--the inspirer, doubtless, of much of his pupil's Puritan sympathies. And Milton enloyed the signal advantage oi growing up m the stimulating atmosphere of cultured home-life. Most men do not realise that the word "culture" signifies anythmg ve_, defimte or desirable before they pass to the Umver- sit?-; for Milton, however, home-fife meant, from the first, not only broad interests and refinement, but active Milton was very tond of the organ; see Il Penseroso, 161. During his residence at Horton Milton made occasional lourneys to London to hear, and obtain instruction (probably trom Henry Lawes) in, music. It was an age of great musical development. Milton went to Christ's C()llege, ('arnhr_dge, m 1he Easter term of I625, took his B A. &.gree in 1r)29, pro- ceeded M.A. in 1632 , and in the latter year left Cambridge. The popular view of Milton's c()nnection with the Uni- versity will be coloured Jor all time by Johnson's un- fortunate story that for some unkno_-n oftence he "suffered the pubhc indignity of corporal correctlon." For vanou_ reasons tlus story Ls now d_scredited by the best judges. It _ certain, however, that early m I626 Milton did have some senous difficulty with his tutor, which led to his removal from Cambridge for a few weeks and his transference to another tut,)r on Iris return later in the term. He spoke oI the incident bitterly at the time m one of his Latin poems, and he spoke of Cambridge batterly in after years On the other hand he voluntarily passed seven years at the Umvers_ty, and resented strongly the _mputatmns brought against h_m m the "Smectvmnuus" controversy that he had been in ill- favour wxth the authorities of his college. Writing in I642, he takes the opportunity "to acknowledge publicly _,ith all grateful mind, that more than ordinary favour and respect, which I found above any of my equals at the hands of those courteous and learned men, the fellows of that college wherein I spent some years: who at my parting, after I had taken two degrees, as the manner is, x His paraphrases of Psalms cxiv. cxxxvi, scarcely come under this heading. Aubrey says in his quaint Life of Milton: "Anno Domini I619 he was ten yeares old, as by his picture [the portrait by Cornelius Janssen_ : and was then a poet." M b x LIFE OF MILTON signified many ways how much better it would content them that I would stay; as by many letters full of kind- ness and loving respect, both before that time, and long after, I was assured of their singular good affection towards me1.

Corns John Milton: Life, Work and Thought Oxford / New York: Oxford University Press, 2008. xiii+488pp. Reviewed by Yuko Kanakubo Noro, Nihon University In 2008, to commemorate the quartercentenary of John Milton’s birth (December 9, 1608), several influential books of Milton studies were published: Is Milton Better than Shakespeare?, by Nigel Smith; John Milton: Paradise Lost edited by Philip Pullman 1 and A Concise Companion to Milton edited by Angelica Duran. There are three biographies as well: Milton: Poet, Pamphleteer and Patriot by Anna Beer; John Milton: A Biography by Neil Forsyth; and John Milton: Life, Work and Thought by Gordon Campbell and Thomas N. Corns. The three biographies differ from each other in the following ways: Beer’s attitude towards Milton’s life reminds the reader of Wordsworth’s invocation to Milton in his sonnet, which begins with “Milton! thou shouldst be living at this hour: / England hath need of thee:”. In short, by appreciating the great poet’s life and works, the reader is to share Milton’s thought, energy and posture towards the world’s difficulties and problems, and live positively, imitating Milton as an exemplum. The base of Beer’s approach is sympathy. Neil Forsyth’s approach is to some extent similar to Beer’s, but he seems to grasp the figure of Milton more objectively than she does, and he seems to entertain his readers by solving the problem as to, “[W]hy Milton is so loved and admired, and even, sometimes, detested”(p.

    Milton’s Paradise Lost: Previously Unrecognized Allusions to the Aurora Borealis, and a Solution to the Comet Conundrum in Book 21 clifford j. cunningham National Astronomical Research Institute of Thailand This article reveals that John Milton employed an allusion to the aurora borealis in book 6 (79–83) of Paradise Lost, unrecognized in more than three centuries of scholarly analysis. Two other likely allusions, and one certain, to the aurora have also been identified. This research casts doubt on the long-held belief, made popular by the astronomer Edmund Halley (1656–1742), that no notable aurora was visible in England in the seventeenth century. After examining an overlooked note by the English historian William Camden (1551–1623), this article explores the possibility that Milton actually saw an aurora. A solution is also presented here to the long-standing conundrum of the comet near the “Arctic” constellation Ophiuchus in book 2 (707–11) of Paradise Lost. Cet article révèle que John Milton fait allusion à une aurore boréale au sixième livre (79–83) de Paradise Lost, allusion qui est restée ignorée pendant plus de trois siècles de lectures savantes.     C01.qxd 8/18/08 14:44 Page 1 Introduction to the 1645 Volume: Poems of Mr. John Milton In 1645, Milton published most but not all of the poems he had composed by that date. The publisher Humphrey Moseley had been bringing out volumes of lyric poetry by royalist poets such as Edmund Waller, and it was likely, as he claims in the intro- duction to the volume, that he approached Milton and encouraged him to publish his verse. Moseley also arranged for the engraved portrait of Milton by William Marshall (see Figure 1), beneath which Milton, who considered the engraving unflattering, placed a witty Greek epigram ridiculing it in a language neither Marshall nor Moseley under- stood. Unlike most contemporary poets, Milton neither wrote a preface, solicited commendatory poems, nor acknowledged a patron. He organized his volume more or less chronologically, thus displaying his poetic development, but also carefully grouped together poems of similar themes and genres. With the Latin tag from Virgil’s Eclogues on the title page (“Baccare frontem / Cingite, ne vati noceat mala lingua futuro” – “Bind my forehead with foxglove, lest evil tongues harm the future Bard”), he promises future poems on even greater themes. In the Latin ode sent with a replacement copy of the volume to John Rouse, librar- ian of the Bodleian Library at Oxford, Milton describes the 1645 volume as a “twin book, rejoicing in a single cover, but with a double title page.” The first section of the volume presents his vernacular poems (mostly in English, but also including a mini-sonnet sequence in Italian), and concludes with A MASK Presented At LUDLOW- Castle.

    SEL 34 (1994) ISSN 0039-3657 Forum II: Milton's Christian Doctrine The Provenance ofJohn Milton's Christian Doctrine: A Reply to William B. Hunter MAURICE KELLEY As scholars have determined it during the past century and a half, the provenance of the Christian Doctrine should invite no suspicion of Milton's authorship. Instead it confirms it. The treatise originated in Milton's youthful collection of proof texts and his perusal of certain shorter systems of theology.' By the 1640s, Edward Phillips reports, his uncle was dictating to him and his fellow students portions of a "Tractate which he thought fit to collect from the ablest of Divines, who had written of that subject: Arnesius, Wollebius. &c. viz. A perfect System of Divinity, of which more hereafter."2 Phillips, however, failed to keep his promise of more information about "A perfect System," but the Anonymous Biographer (Cyriack Skinner) reports that about 1655 Milton began "the framing a Body of Divinity out of the Bible . which . hee finished after the Restoration."3 Our manuscript of the Christian Doctrine confirms Cyriack's rough dating, for the primary hand in it is that ofJeremie Picard, who served as witness or scribe in Milton documents dating from January 1658 to May 1660;4 and Cyriack's mention of Milton's heterodoxies5 indicates Maurice Kelley is Emeritus Professor of English, Princeton University. 154 REPLY TO HUNT E R that he is writing of the Christian Doctrine that we have today. Milton lived in a period of transition affectin^ many as- pects of life, among them the status of wonen. Age-old conserva- tive beliefs were still alive and had a temporary resurgence un- der the Puritan hegemony, but liberal forces were also at work* The poet had the misfortune to be involved in a partic- ularly unhappy marriage. After a youth spent largely in study, with little contact with young women, he hastily married an im- mature Royalist bride, Mary Powell. Her refusal to return to Milton after she had left him in the early months of the mar- riage to visit her family suggests that Hilton and Mary Powell were incompatible from the start. Though there was a reconcil- iation later, Hilton's relationship with her, her whole -family, and, after her death, her children as well, was replete with friction and bitterness.

Received December 29th, 2009 Béla Mester Hungarian Academy of Sciences, Institute for Philosophical Research, Etele út 59-61, HU–1119 Budapest [email protected] Censorship as a Typographical Chimera John Milton and John Locke on Gestures1 Abstract The aim of my paper is to show some elements in Milton’s and Locke’s political writin­ gs, depending on their attitudes to different media. Milton in his argumentation against censorship must demonstrate that all the ancient instances for censorship, usually cited in his century, can be interpreted as examples of another phenomenon. However, Milton, analysing loci of Plato’s Republic and some Scriptural topics, recognises the scope and significance of non­conceptual, non­printed, non­verbal forms of communication; he des­ cribes them as signs of childish, female or uneducated behaviours, as valueless phenomena from the point of view of political liberty incarnated in the freedom of press. John Locke’s attitude is the same. I will show a chain of ideas, similar to Milton’s one, in his Two Tracts on Government and in his Epistola de tolerantia, focusing the analyses on the concept of adiaphora (indifferent things). Abstract My thesis explores the way in which the Italian language and literary culture contributed to John Milton’s early development as a poet (over the period up to 1639 and the composition of Epitaphium Damonis). I begin by investigating the nature of the cultural relationship between England and Italy in the late medieval and early modern periods. I then examine how Milton’s own engagement with the Italian language and its literature evolved in the context of his family background, his personal contacts with the London Italian community and modern language teaching in the early seventeenth century as he grew to become a ‘multilingual’ poet. My study then turns to his first published collection of verse, Poems 1645. Here, I reconsider the Italian elements in Milton’s early poetry, beginning with the six poems he wrote in Italian, identifying their place and significance in the overall structure of the volume, and their status and place within the Italian Petrarchan verse tradition.
