ताकु तीसताा ीभगवानवाचु SiSeeing th thfihtde frightened PdPandavas, The Blessed Lord said, trastān kuntī-sutāndṛṣṭvā śrī-bhagavānuvāca ाणसायकपीडताने ् | pidbierced by D'Drona's arrows, droṇa-sāyaka-pīḍitān

मितमाेयसे यु the wise SfSri , engaged in their welfare, matimāñ śreyase yuktaḥ

के शवाऽजे नमवीतु ् || said to ... keśavo 'rjunam abravīt (164.66) नषै यु ेन सामे अथा हत े नषै By fighti ng on th e battl e fie ld, Drona If As hvatth ama were kille d, Drona naiṣa yuddhena saṅgrāme aśvatthāmni hate naiṣa

जते  श कथन | ययु ेदित मितमम | cannotbt be d ef eat ed db by any means, would not fi ght . Thi s i s my opi ni on. jetuṁśakyaḥ kathañcana yudhyed iti matir mama

अप वहणाृ यु े त  हत  सय ुगे कद् even by himself, Anyone who could kill Ashvatthama in battle api vṛtra-haṇā yuddhe taṁ hataṁ saṁyuge kaścid

रथयूथपयूथप || अ ै शसत  मानव || the leader of leaders of armies. would be praised by people. ratha-yūthapa-yūthapaḥ (164.67) asmai śaṁsatu mānavaḥ (164.69)

सय उवाच एताराचयाजने ् SjSanjaya said, O Ki ng, thi s a dvi ce was not lik ed sañjaya uvāca etan nārocayad rājan

कु तीपाु े धनय | by AjArjuna, Kti''s son. kuntī-putro dhanañ-jayaḥ

अये वराेचयसवे Everyone else accepted it. anye tvarocayan sarve

कृ  ेण त  युधर || accepted it with great reluctance. kṛcchreṇa tu yudhiṣṭhiraḥ (164.70) तता े भीमा े महाबार् भीमसेनत  सीडम् Then, mi ght y-armed Then Bhima shfllhamefully tato bhīmo mahā-bāhur bhīma-senas tu savrīḍam

अनीके व े महागजम ् | उपये ाणमाहवे े | killed an h uge el eph ant f rom hi s own army approachdhed Drona on the ba ttle fie ld. anīke sve mahā-gajam upetya droṇam āhave

जघान गदया राजन् अथामा हत इित with his mace, O King. "Ashvatthama is dead" jaghāna gadayā rājan aśvatthāmā hata iti

अथामानमयुत || शदमु ैकार ह || The elephant was named Ashvatthama. he said loudly. aśvatthāmānam ityuta (164.71) śabdam uccaiś cakāra ha (164.72)

अथामेित ह गज भीमसेनवच ुवा AhAshvath ama, the el eph ant HiHearing Bhima' swords, aśvatthāmeti hi gajaḥ bhīma-sena-vacaḥśrutvā

याता े नाा हताऽभवते ् | ाणतपरमयमे ् | known by th a t name ha d been kill ed . Drona, thinki ng ab out hi s b el oved son, khyāto nāmnā hato 'bhavat droṇas tat-parama-priyam

कृ वा मनस त  भीमाे मनसा सगााऽभे ूद् With this in mind, Bhima wilted away kṛtvā manasi taṁ bhīmo manasā sanna-gātro 'bhūd

मया यातवातदा || यथा सैकतमस || uttered this lie to Drona. like a heap of sand on the seashore. mithyā vyāhṛtavāṁstadā (164.73) yathā saikatam ambhasi (164.74) शमान स तया स दमाना े यथत Drona suspecte d it was a li e, Drona, fum ing and agit ittdated, śaṅkamānaḥ sa tan mithyā sa dahyamāno vyathitaḥ

वीय वसतय व ै | कु तीपु  यधरमु ् | kithtthfhiknowing the strength of his own son. unto Yudhi shthi ra, son of KtiKunti, vīryajñaḥ svasutasya vai (164.75) kuntī-putraṁ yudhiṣṭhiram

अहत  वा हत  विते "Alive or dead is ahataṁ vā hataṁ veti

पछ सतमान || my own son?" he asked. papraccha sutam ātmanaḥ (164.94)

थरा बहु  ाणये तता े िनपाडवामवीु  The st rong-middinded Yudhi s hthira, unto Drona Then, fear ing a world with out PdPandvas sthirā buddhir hi droṇasya tato niṣpāṇḍavāmurvīṁ

न पाथा े वयतेऽनतमृ ् | करयत  युधा  पितम ् | could not t ell a li e as a result of fi ghti ng na pārtho vakṣyate 'nṛtam kariṣyantaṁ yudhāṁ patim

याणामप लाकानामे ् ाणे  ावा धमराज even fffor the sake of ruling the three worlds with Drona, unto Yudhishthira, trayāṇāmapilokānām droṇaṁ jñātvā -rājaṁ

एयाथ े कथन || गावदाे े यथताऽवीते ् || or anything else. Sri Krishna, said with agitation... aiśvaryārthe kathañcana (164.95) govindo vyathito 'bravīt(164.97) ीभगवानवाचु यधदवस ाणाे े The Blessed Lord said, If Drona, fjtfor just one h hlfdalf day more śrī-bhagavānuvāca yady ardha-divasaṁ droṇo ययतु े मयुमाथत | is f ought , b ecause of hi s anger, yudhyate manyum āsthitaḥ

सय वीम त े सनाे I tell you truthfully, your army satyaṁ bravīmi te senā

वनाश  समुपैयित || will be totally destroyed. vināśaṁ samupaiṣyati (164.98)

स भवाात  ना े ाणाते ् सय उवाच YhldttfYou should protect us from Drona. SjSanjaya said, sa bhavāṁstrātu no droṇāt sañjaya uvāca

सयाायाऽने तृ  भवेत् | AliA lie would ldb be b ett er th an t ruth . satyājjyāyo 'nṛtaṁ bhavet

अनतृ  जीवतयाथे Ifff a lie, for the sake o f one's li fe anṛtaṁ jīvitasyārthe

वद पयतृ ेऽनतृ ै || is said, one is not tainted by lies. vadan na spṛśyate 'nṛtaiḥ (164.99) तय तचन  वाु तमतयभये माे HiHaving heard dKih' Krishna's word s, Overcome b y f ear ab out t elli ng a li e, tasya tad vacanaṁśrutvā tam atathya-bhaye magno

कृ णवाचादते | जये सा े यधरु | andbd bei ng compell lldbed by th em, btbut att tthdtached to vi itctory, Yu dhishthi ra kṛṣṇa-vākya-pracoditaḥ jaye sakto yudhiṣṭhiraḥ

भाववा महाराज अयमवीाजन् because offf the future, O King, added very sofOftly, O King, bhāvitvāc ca mahārāja avyaktam abravīdrājan

वु समुपचमे || हत कु र इयुत || Yudhishtira was able to say that lie to Drona. "The elephant is dead." vaktuṁ samupacakrame (164.105) hataḥ kuñjara ityuta (164.106)

तय पूव  रथ पृयाश् युधरा ु ता PiPreviousl y, Yu dhishthi ra' schithariot HiHaving heard dtht that asserti tifon from Yu dhis hthira, tasya pūrvaṁ rathaḥ pṛthvyāś yudhiṣṭhirāttutad vākyaṁ

चतर ल उर | ुवा ाणाे े महारथ | altdfihbthdlways resु ted four inches above the ground. the great general , Drona, catur-aṅgula uttaraḥ śrutvā droṇomahā-rathaḥ

बभूवैव  त  तनाे े े पयसनसताु े But having told this lie, tormented by the demise of his son, babhūvaivaṁ tu tenokte putra-vyasana-santapto

तय वाहापशहीमृ ् || िनराशा े जीवतेऽभवत् || his chariot touched the earth. lost all hope in life. tasya vāhāspṛśan mahīm (164.107) nirāśojīvite 'bhavat (164.108) त  ा परमाे  SiSeeing Drona extreme ly affli ct ed , taṁ dṛṣṭvā paramodvignaṁ

शाकाे पहतचे तसमे ् | with hi s mi nd overcome b y gri ef , śokopahata-cetasam

पाालराजय सता े the son of , pāñcāla-rājasya suto

धृु समावत् || Dhrishtaduymna, attacked him. dhṛṣṭadyumnaḥ samādravat (164.111)
