Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death. 1 Peter 2:24 He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness… Sloth is a deadly sin that must die! 1 Timothy 5:13 …they get into the habit of being idle and going about from house to house. And not only do they become idlers, but also gossips and busybodies, saying things they ought not to. Ezekiel 16:49 Your sister Sodom's sins were pride, laziness, and too much food, while the poor and needy suffered outside her door. Sloth does not just mean being lazy on the job. Matthew 25:26 “His master replied, ‘You wicked, lazy servant!’” 1 Timothy 5:8 If anyone does not provide for his relatives, and especially for his immediate family, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever. Sloth puts us in partnership with the devil. Proverbs 18:9 One who is slack in his work is brother to one who destroys. Matthew 12:30 “He who is not with me is against me, and he who does not gather with me scatters.” God considers hard work a virtue. 1 Thessalonians 4:11-12 Make it your ambition to lead a quiet life, to mind your own business and to work with your hands, just as we told you, so that your daily life may win the respect of outsiders and so that you will not be dependent on anybody. -

No presentation of life is complete without its sins, and every master of literary art has known it, from the poet King of Israel to Robert Browning. The imagination of the Middle Ages, in many ways more virile and expansive than our own, had a strong grasp of this fact, and realised that it is the sense of fault or error that lies at the root of every forward movement, that there is no real progress unless it is accompanied by a sense of sin. -

The Purgatorio, XI The terrace of gluttony is reserved for those who had a disordered love of the pleasures of food and drink. Dante and Virgil leave this terrace and climb up to enter the terrace of lust, which is reserved for those who had a disordered love of the pleasures of the body. Just how disordered this can become may be seen in our times by the fact that the fertility-industrial complex has stored millions, millions of “spare” embryos in freezers, the result of in vitro fertilization. Some of these embryos have been used for medical and scientific research – which makes me shudder- but most embryos will be stored indefinitely, which ought to fill me with something, but mostly makes me numb from the sheer extent of this cold, calculating, industrial regulation of human life. The terraces of gluttony and lust are linked, just as the capital sins of gluttony and lust are in our world. People who glut their bodies with food or drink set themselves up for a fall into lust. Thus the poets learn at the entrance of this new terrace that human nature is not fulfilled by mere nourishment, nor is the body ever fulfilled by mere reproduction. Instead, a human being – body and soul together – is ordered to and created for charity, the heavenly love, and for the Holy Eucharist, which is the bread from heaven. When they enter into the terrace of lust, which is the last of the terraces before paradise, they hear a voice cry out, “But I have not known man.” Those are the words of the Blessed Virgin. -

AUGUSTINE ON SUFFERING AND ORDER: PUNISHMENT IN CONTEXT BY SAMANTHA ELIZABETH THOMPSON A Thesis Submitted in Conformity with the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy Department of Philosophy University of Toronto © Samantha Elizabeth Thompson 2010 Augustine on Suffering and Order: Punishment in Context Samantha Elizabeth Thompson Doctor of Philosophy Department of Philosophy University of Toronto 2010 Abstract Augustine of Hippo argues that all suffering is the result of the punishment of sin. Misinterpretations of his meaning are common since isolated statements taken from his works do give misleading and contradictory impressions. This dissertation assembles a comprehensive account of Augustine’s understanding of the causes of suffering to show that these views are substantive and internally consistent. The argument of the dissertation proceeds by confronting and resolving the apparent problems with Augustine’s views on sin and punishment from within the broader framework of his anthropology and metaphysics. The chief difficulty is that Augustine gives two apparently irreconcilable accounts of suffering as punishment. In the first, suffering is viewed as self-inflicted because sin is inherently self-damaging. In the second, God inflicts suffering in response to sin. This dissertation argues that these views are united by Augustine’s concern with the theme of ‘order.’ The first account, it argues, is actually an expression of Augustine’s doctrine that evil is the privation of good; since good is for Augustine synonymous with order, we can then see why he views all affliction as the concrete experience of disorder brought about by sin. This context in turn allows us to see that, by invoking the ii notion of divinely inflicted punishment in both its retributive and remedial forms, Augustine wants to show that disorder itself is embraced by order, either because disorder itself must obey laws, or because what is disordered can be reordered. -

Handout #1 - “The Seven Deadly Sins” ("Self-Destructive Behaviors") NOTE: Although Saint Thomas of Aquinas is usually given credit for these ideas, much of what he perceived originally came from the Greeks. This information is a revised and easy-to-understand version of what would otherwise be thought too complex to study in high school. A "sin" in the context of Thomas of Aquinas, can be defined as "something human beings do which causes them to be unreasonable and unhappy." Another way to define "sin" is "self-destructive behavior that one performs because he/she has never truly educated him/herself as to the passions which may drive and control him/her". These are "The Seven Deadly Sins." 1. ANGER You become angry at someone or something to the point that you lose control over your actions and words. 2. SLOTH You do something, but you only do it haphazardly -- only enough to get it done. Instead of giving life [people, yourself] your best, you give life less than your best. 3. GREED/AVARICE You let material items control your sense of contentment. You want more and more things and are never satisfied. 4. LUST You have a strong sexual attraction towards a person. You can't get him/her out of your mind. (You are "miserable" because you don't have "him" or "her" and this lustful feeling does not change the reality that you do not have him/her.) 5. ENVY You wish you were someone else because of the qualities and/or possessions a person has. You betray yourself -- in a sense play Judas to yourself. -
Analysis of Justice in St. Augustine's Political Philosophy and Nigerian

Department of Philosophy Kogi State University Anyigba, Kogi State Nigeria Abstract St Augustine of Hippo (354-430CE) is the most influential Christian philosopher in western Christianity after Paul the Apostle. This paper analyses justice in Augustine‟s political philosophy as contained in His „City of God‟. It will be argued that, we could learn from his answers to bad politicking which resulted in destruction of State. His answers on various theological and philosophical issues have continued to be relevant in modern theological and philosophical debate. A lot can still be learnt from him even in the area of Church‟s response to bad governance. Augustine‟s argument is that Kingdoms (Countries, nations) without justice are robberies, as Kings (Governors) of such are robbers. This supposition is illustrated with three historical allusions namely: the encounter of Alexander the Great with a Pirate, the establishment of Roman Empire by Romulus, and the establishment of Assyrian Empire by Ninus. Contextually, Nigeria as it is today falls into this category of robberies as the British colonial masters forced this unequal union for their personal, self-seeking and self-interest, to satisfy their libido dominandi. An analysis of what Augustine meant by justice will be carried out. Philosophically, Augustine evaluated justice from Neo-Platonic background and theologically from Pauline concept of justice.
