Where the Mind is Without Fear Introduction The poet draws a picture of free India. He dreamt of a country with no boundaries. This poem is his idealistic dream about India . It is self explanatory. Tagore prays for the welfare of the country. Poem Where the mind is without fear and the head is held high; Where knowledge is free; Where the world has not been broken up into fragments by narrow domestic walls; Where words come out from the depth of truth; Where tireless striving stretches its arms towards perfection ; Where the clear stream of reason has not lost its way into the dreary desert sand of dead habit ; Where the mind is led forward by thee into ever- widening thought and action…….. Into the heaven of freedom, my Father, let my country awake. Denton, Advisor Heather Inwood Copyright by Hao Zhou 2010 Abstract The present study serves to explore the relationships between cities and literature by addressing the issues of space, time, and modernity in four works of fiction, Lao She’s Luotuo xiangzi (Camel Xiangzi, aka Rickshaw Boy), Mao Dun’s Ziye (Midnight), Ba Jin’s Han ye (Cold nights), and Zhang Ailing’s Qingcheng zhi lian (Love in a fallen city), and the four cities they depict, namely Beijing, Shanghai, Chongqing, and Hong Kong, respectively. In this thesis I analyze the depictions of the cities in the four works, and situate them in their historical and geographical contexts to examine the characteristics of each city as represented in the novels. In studying urban space in the literary texts, I try to address issues of the “imaginablity” of cities to question how physical urban space intertwines with the characters’ perception and imagination about the cities and their own psychological activities. These works are about the characters, the plots, or war in the first half of the twentieth century; they are also about cities, the human experience in urban space, and their understanding or reaction about the urban space. The experience of cities in Republican era fiction is a novel one, one associated with a new modern historical consciousness. -

Starosta University of Rhode Island Howard University Two main trends have hastened the need for the world to understand the communication of people from the Chinese diaspora. First, with their large population and the rapid development of their economies in the last two decades, the Chinese people in the mainland, in Taiwan, in Hong Kong, and elsewhere overseas have gradually formed a powerful network that affects almost every aspect of world affairs. Second, as the world is moving toward a global community, mutual understanding among people of different cultures has become an indispensable requirement for global citizens to live together peacefully and productively. Knowing how the Chinese think and communicate is one way to develop a more interrelated future world. The goal of this special issue, then, is to improve our understanding of the Chinese people(s) by exploring how they manage and resolve those conflicts they encounter in the process of human interaction. Culture and conflict management/resolution have an interdependent relationship with one another. According to Chen and Starosta (forthcoming), three aspects of culture especially influence conflict management/resolution: cultural context, language differences, and thinking patterns. Ting-Toomey (1985) theorizes that differences are found in conflict management/resolution between low-context and high-context cultures. For example, people of high-context cultures tend to enter into conflict when their cultural normative expectations are violated, tend to adopt a non-confrontational and indirect attitude towards conflicts, and tend to use an affective-intuitive style of conflict management. -

I argue that the fluidity of satiric writing in the 1930s and 1940s undermines the certainties of the “satiric triangle” and gives rise to what I call, variously, self-satire, self-counteractive satire, empathetic satire and ambiguous satire. It has been standard in the study of satire to assume fixed and fairly stable relations among satirist, reader, and satirized object. This “satiric triangle” highlights the opposition of satirist and satirized object and has generally assumed an alignment by the reader with the satirist and the satirist’s judgments of the satirized object. Literary critics and theorists have usually shared these assumptions about the basis of satire. I argue, however, that beginning with late-Qing exposé fiction, satire in modern Chinese literature has shown an unprecedented uncertainty and fluidity in the relations among satirist, reader and satirized object. -

In The Eye Of The Selector: Ancient-Style Prose Anthologies In Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) China Abstract The rapid growth of woodblock printing in sixteenth-century China not only transformed wenzhang (“literature”) as a category of knowledge, it also transformed the communities in which knowledge of wenzhang circulated. Twentieth-century scholarship described this event as an expansion of the non-elite reading public coinciding with the ascent of vernacular fiction and performance literature over stagnant classical forms. Because this narrative was designed to serve as a native genealogy for the New Literature Movement, it overlooked the crucial role of guwen (“ancient-style prose,” a term which denoted the everyday style of classical prose used in both preparing for the civil service examinations as well as the social exchange of letters, gravestone inscriptions, and other occasional prose forms among the literati) in early modern literary culture. This dissertation revises that narrative by showing how a diverse range of social actors used anthologies of ancient-style prose to build new forms of literary knowledge and shape new literary publics. -

Email: [email protected] ABSTRACT Zheng Zhenduo was a prominent translator, writer and archaeologist in the May Fourth New Literature Movement. He made great achievements in the study of translation and translation practice during the 1920s. As a cross-disciplinary theory, Eco-translatology provides a new perspective for the study of translation. The study shows that in Zheng Zhenduo's translation activities the following ideas are embodied: "harmonious unity" of translational eco-systems, "translator-centredness" of translation subjectivity, translators' action of "adaptation and selection", and translators' pursuance of "doing things with translations". INTRODUCTION Birds", Zheng Zhenduo's version is the most popular Zheng Zhenduo (1898-1958), one of the pioneers of and influential one, and it is still loved by readers from the May Fourth New Culture Movement in China, was generation to generation. From this, Zheng Zhenduo's an excellent translator, writer and archaeologist. In translation level can be seen. Zheng Zhenduo also has addition, he also made outstanding contributions to his own views on translation theory. He has made literary editing, sorting out and protecting cultural outstanding contributions in introducing advanced heritage. -
