ROBERT-HOUDIN. CONJUROR, AUTHOR, AND AMBASSADOR. BY HENRY RIDGELY EVANS. ON a certain day in the year 1843, the Count de I'Escalopier, a scion of the old regime of France, and a great lover of curios, was strolling along an unpreten- tious street of the Marais Quarter, of Paris. He stopped to look at /''' some mechanical toys displayed %*^ in the window of a dark little shop, over the door of which was painted the following modest sign: "M. Robert-Houdin, Pendules de Precision." This sign noted the fact that the proprietor was a watchmaker, and that his wares were distinguished for precise run- ning. What particularly attracted the nobleman's attention was a peculiar looking clock of clearest crystal that ran apparently with- out works, the invention of M. Robert-Houdin. The Count, who was a great lover of science amu- sante, or science wedded to recrea- tion, purchased the magic clock, and better than that made the acquaintance of the inventor, the obscure watchmaker, who was l"The cut represents the magic clock invented by Robert-Houdin about sixty years ago. DOMENICO DANTE FISM International President Dear President, Dear Friend in Magic, My philosophy has always been this: “facts speak for themselves”. You can check what I did in these three/six years, with the precious help of the Int. Vice Presidents and the Consultancy Groups, in my triennial report that will be sent to you soon. There is still a lot to do of course and this is why I am asking for the re-election (according to our Statutes for the last period of three years possible,) to accomplish something that is very important to me, since one of the main goals of FISM is to improve Magic and to raise the level of Magicians: - FISM Competition Compliance System (CCS) that will provide rules and services to Associated Societies to better Qualify their Competition and promote them as FISM Compliance Competition. - FISM Jury Qualification System (JQS) selecting and training qualified Judges to assure uniformed and high-quality judging all over the World. - To go on promoting FISM also outside the world of magic (including Academies and Universities). The Fism Board is already working on this matter and the success of the project matters to me. I want to thank you all for the support you gave to me and the Board during these years. It is a great reward for the really hard job we did. Kindest regards Domenico Dante DOMENICO DANTE FISM International President Dear President, Dear Friend in Magic, Ma philosophie a toujours été celle-ci : « Les faits parlent d’eux-mêmes ». It was evident, early on, that this collection would benefitanyone serious about getting serious in magic. So here we are. Thanks to all the generous magicians who have allowed me to include their work in this collection. I am overwhelmed by the support they have shown. In particular, I wish to single out Darwin Ortiz, whose writings I admire greatly, and who went against a personal policy, and agreed to participate. I consider it a favor to me, and a favor to all those who will learn from his writings. Thanks, Darwin, for being flexible and generous. Thanks to Stephen Minch, whose encouragement and “pull” helped initiate the project. Irving Quant helped with the translation of “Fundamentals of Illusionism” by Juan Tamariz. Denis Behr suggested a few essays I was not familiar with.

  • Exhibition Guide & Event Highlights Staging Magic
EXHIBITION GUIDE & EVENT HIGHLIGHTS STAGING MAGIC A warm welcome to Senate House Library and to Staging Magic: The Story Behind the Illusion, an adventure through the history of conjuring and magic as entertainment, a centuries-long fascination that still excites and inspires today. The exhibition displays items on the history of magic from Senate House Library’s collection. The library houses and cares for more than 2 million books, 50 named special collections and over 1,800 archives. It’s one of the UK’s largest academic libraries focused on the arts, humanities and social sciences and holds a wealth of primary source material from the medieval period to the modern age. I hope that you are inspired by the exhibition and accompanying events, as we explore magic’s spell on society from illustrious performances in the top theatres, and street and parlour tricks that have sparked the imagination of society. Dr Nick Barratt Director, Senate House Library INTRODUCTION The exhibition features over 60 stories which focus on magic in the form of sleight-of-hand (legerdemain) and stage illusions, from 16th century court jugglers to the great masters of the golden age of magic in the 19th and early 20th centuries. These stories are told through the books, manuscripts and ephemera of the Harry Price Library of Magical Literature. Through five interconnected themes, the exhibition explores how magic has remained a mainstay of popular culture in the western world, how its secrets have been kept and revealed, and how magicians have innovated to continue to surprise and enchant their audiences.
