INTRODUCTION by Julien J. Proskauer In this book is compiled the knowledge obtained during more than forty-five years’ experience in magic. In it, Mr. Hugard has assembled magic of the past, present and future. For thirty-five years, Mr. Hugard was one of vaudeville’s famous performers of magic. His name has been in lights in the biggest cities in every country. He knows magic as a performer and as an author. He is the world’s most prolific writer on magical subjects, but this is the first book he has ever written for other than those in the inner circle of magic. In it, are workable effects that will bring pleasure and entertainment to your audience and much happi­ ness to you. I have been interested in magic for more than thirty years and have known all the great magicians—and the not so great—over this period. Professionals and amateurs alike find in magic a release for their natural talents as well as a means of livelihood or hobby which brings happiness and pleasure to others. The requirement for a long receive range in order to shorten rescue time asks for highly sensitive receivers. Such highly sensitive receivers are vulnerable to be influenced by interference from other electronic devices, but as well metal parts and passive electronics may detune the antennas or act as a unwanted reflector in the case of a Recco search. The percentage of users who carry a wide range of electronic devices such as mobile phones, helmet cameras, music players, heart rate monitors etc in the outdoors has considerably increased over time and therefore the negative influence on an efficient search effort has in several cases lead to loss of valuable rescue time and greatly disturbed the rescuers on the accident site. The study includes a detailed analysis on the mechanisms of interference, a matrix of influence and potential consequences as well as a new, user group specific recommendation on how to avoid interference issues in companion and organized rescue. ON a certain day in the year 1843, the Count de I'Escalopier, a scion of the old regime of France, and a great lover of curios, was strolling along an unpreten- tious street of the Marais Quarter, of Paris. He stopped to look at /''' some mechanical toys displayed %*^ in the window of a dark little shop, over the door of which was painted the following modest sign: "M. Robert-Houdin, Pendules de Precision." This sign noted the fact that the proprietor was a watchmaker, and that his wares were distinguished for precise run- ning. What particularly attracted the nobleman's attention was a peculiar looking clock of clearest crystal that ran apparently with- out works, the invention of M. Robert-Houdin. The Count, who was a great lover of science amu- sante, or science wedded to recrea- tion, purchased the magic clock, and better than that made the acquaintance of the inventor, the obscure watchmaker, who was l"The cut represents the magic clock invented by Robert-Houdin about sixty years ago.
