The Clinical Commissioning Groups have commented that there is capacity in the short-medium term at the local GP surgeries to accommodate additional patients. However, County-wide there is an increasing shortage of GP’s, nurses and other healthcare staff which could affect future capacity should demand increase. Overall, Deeping St. Nicholas currently has enough open space to meet its resident’s needs. However, the additional population generated by this site and elsewhere in the settlement could increase use of this local open space reducing its overall quality. Based on the site area, about 6.74ha of open space may be required, which could be provided on-site to meet future needs. If this could be secured on-site through the masterplanning it would have a positive impact on this objective. Local air and noise pollution is likely to increase considerably with the new development through increased traffic, which can have a negative impact on physical and mental health. 3. However, the site is well outside the ideal 1km walking distance of the nearest local shop. The potential traffic generated by this site means that schemes to address traffic impact in and around the area (particularly Deeping St. Nicholas and Spalding) should ensure that any increase in traffic does not restrict access to jobs and services, and promotes safe, easy use for all. On the other hand increased traffic may encourage people to seek alternative sustainable options, particularly for local journeys. The site will not directly impact upon, and therefore contribute towards, any major transport routes in the area. There are no bus stops nearby, making public transport access difficult for those living within the site. 4. To promote strong, secure, socially √/x inclusive and cohesive communities for ONS statistics indicate that Crowland and Deeping St. Nicholas ward is not generally a deprived area, for all residents of South East Lincolnshire example: The number of residents without access to a car is below average (10.6% compared to 18%) while crime rate per 1000 is 27.6 compared to 49.7. However in 2015, compared with Lincolnshire as a whole, its long term unemployment rate was above average (29.8% compared to 25.6%). The type, tenure and affordability of housing on the site should be informed by an analysis of the function this site should play, alongside other housing sites, in meeting the overall housing need identified in the SHMA. If it meets this need, it could have a positive effect upon inclusivity by enhancing the range of properties available, including for those on a low income, older people and those with disabilities. A balance may need to be struck between the development of market housing and affordable housing, to ensure that development can help provide for all infrastructure needed to deliver new housing. Quality affordable and market housing could also generate more energy and water efficient homes which could help reduce fuel poverty and lower bills for residents. The majority of the area’s services and facilities and public transport links are outside the ideal walking distances meaning that social inclusion may be difficult to achieve. As discussed in Objective 13 the nearest employment site at Cradge Bank (4.6km) is within the ideal 7km drive of the site, but outside the ideal walking distance of 1km. The rural nature of the site means that it may prove difficult for residents to easily use sustainable transport options to access employment, particularly because of a current lack of cycle paths or pavements from the site. This could have a negative impact, potentially excluding access for some residents to local employment which could be problematic given that the areas long term unemployment rate is above average. Good design could have a positive effect upon crime by ensuring that the design of new housing promotes safe, sustainable and inclusive communities where the opportunity for crime and anti social behaviour is minimised. No infrastructure will be lost on site as a consequence of this proposal. 5. To improve education, training and life- x long learning, improve the skills and The development would be likely to accommodate 962 dwellings. The LEA considers that development of the site is likely to create demand for increased primary and secondary provision over the plan period. Deeping St. Nicholas currently has a lack of capacity at primary level, although it appears to have some ability to expand. However, this might not necessarily be to the scale a development of this size would require. In nearby Spalding, the equivalent of seven forms of primary entry and a new secondary school with 6th form will be required in order to accommodate children from the additional 100 dwellings anticipated in Deeping St. Nicholas. The LEA will continue to review school place provision on an annual basis to provide more certainty to developers should the scheme come forward for development. Development on this site will generate employment during the construction period, which may involve apprenticeships or employment of the local long term unemployed, which could help improve job prospects and prosperity for residents particularly young people. 6. To protect, enhance and sustain green x infrastructure, biodiversity and The site falls within a SSSI Impact Risk Zone. Upon receiving any planning application to develop the site for geodiversity across South East 100 dwellings or more, the local planning authority must consult Natural England for advice on how impacts Lincolnshire might be avoided or mitigated. Development of the site would lead to the loss of an area of open countryside, including some trees and hedging located adjacent to the eastern boundary. Several drainage channels run through the site and along all boundaries. Development may fragment interlinked habitats that exist or affect their hydrology and therefore their ecology. Although the size of the site means they could be protected from direct damage, their sustainability could be undermined by the effect the development would have on ecosystem services such as surface water pollution and movement of species, and by increased recreational pressure on the site. Furthermore, the site is within approx. 380m of a protected site (River Welland LWS) and so development may have an affect on habitats and BAP species and consequently biodiversity. For example, there is potential for increased residential development in this area to have an impact upon biodiversity due to increased footfall. Good design could generate a positive biodiversity impact by retaining trees and maximising opportunities for enhancement and mitigation given the site’s general lack of landscape features and the lack of semi-natural habitats.

Perhaps no place that has watched the passing of twelve centuries can show to modern generations so little contemporary history as Crowland. All its original charters were destroyed by fire in 1091, and of the chronicles, only two survive—one of the eighth and the other of the twelfth century. Several histories have been compiled by its monks and abbots who worked from legend and tradition, but the most detailed, that of Ingulf, the famous first Norman Abbot, has been recently exposed as a forgery of much later date. But in the carvings upon its West front, Crowland carries for ever an invaluable record of its past, which posterity may read and interpret. The coming of Guthlac, the patron saint, to Crowland in the eighth century, is one of the most picturesque incidents of early history, for there is an austerity and mystery in this first hermit of the fen country, seeking a place for meditation and self-discipline in the swamps which were shunned with terror by ordinary men. “Then,” says a chronicler, “he came to a great marsh, situated upon the eastern shore of the Mercians; and diligently enquired the nature of the place. A certain man told him that in this vast swamp there was a remote island, which many had tried to inhabit but had failed on account of the terrible ghosts there.

    South Holland IDB History A brief history of South Holland Internal Drainage Board The history of land drainage in the Fens and Marsh of South Holland in Lincolnshire is an ancient one: there was an intensive Roman British occupation in the Fens South of Whaplode and Holbeach where the land level, today ranging between + 2.15 metres and 3.05 metres O.D.N., must then have been much higher relative to the Spring tide level. Towards the end of the 4th. Century A.D. there was a period of subsidence with consequent flooding, and it is not until the 11th.Century that the Doomsday Book reveals that a narrow strip perhaps two miles wide on either side of the main road from Long Sutton to Spalding had been re-occupied and cultivated. It was bounded on the North by the so-called Roman Bank, beyond which lay the salt marshes and the sea, and on the South by a line of banks which protected it against the fresh water floods from the Rivers Welland and Nene. The settlers in this narrow strip soon began to follow their time honoured practice of inning or embarking land: banks were built to recover land both from the salt marshes, where there had been a thriving salt making industry - dating back to pre-Roman times and from the Fen. The basic pattern was founded on the individual parish: no village trusted its neighbour to keep their banks safe, so that the inhabitants of each, built lateral banks known as headings to join their Fen bank to the Roman Bank and then constructed a River or drain running from the southern end of the parish to the Roman Bank and thence into the sea.

    Lincolnshire Remembrance: Memories and Memorials Newsletter November 2014 Project Update: http://www.lincstothepast.com/home/lincolnshire-remembrance/ I am sure you will all have been involved in Remembrance events this November; my own village of Willoughton had an exhibition featuring both the men and women who served and those who died with contributions from the school on the Saturday and a Remembrance Service on the Sunday which seemed to be attended by the whole village and more! It was really lovely to see everyone so committed to remembering the sacrifices and honouring the people who died for us. Lincolnshire Remembrance Database: Richard has been valiantly editing all the people records on the database and we have very gradually been adding information about memorials, but we still have a lot of information to add. Thank you so much to all of you who have been checking that the information for your local memorial is right and sending us extra information. The quality of the information we have is really reliant on the dedication of you, our volunteer researchers.
