New releases for Aug/Sept 2018

What do you do when the unthinkable happens? Elle Wright had an admittedly easy pregnancy - her scans went well, she and her baby were healthy throughout, and in May 2016, she and her husband welcomed their son, Teddy, into the world. Just a few hours after giving birth, they woke to find a nurse holding a cold and unresponsive Teddy, who had stopped breathing during the night. The happiest day of Elle's life had turned into every parent's worst nightmare, and she had to let her beautiful baby boy go. Three days after delivering him into the world, Elle sat with Teddy in her arms as he took his last breaths, and tucked him in for the final time. Ask Me His Name is a moving account of Elle's pregnancy, Teddy's life, and what happens when a mother leaves a hospital with empty arms. In the UK, 1 in 4 pregnancies end in loss, but conversations about the heartbreakingly frequent issue of baby loss are few and far between. In this honest, beautifully written and hopeful exploration of mothering, Elle explores how she navigated a parenthood that no one had prepared her for.

South Holland District Council

SMEs in South Holland can tap into £1.3 million in European Regional Development Funds to help them expand their business. SHDC is administering the fund under its Grants4Growth scheme, and so far has made 95 awards worth over £747,000 to help businesses expand. These grants have resulted in the creation of 41 jobs, and together with £2.6 million in match funding from the businesses themselves, represents £3.4 million in investment in the area. Businesses can apply for be-tween £1,000 and £24,999 for projects that will help their business develop or build capacity. The grant can be for up to 28% of the total cost of the project they wish to fund, with the balance being met by the applicant. Servicemen and women both serving and retired were honoured for the service they have given for their country as part of the national Armed Forces Day celebrations. Amongst several events put together, as Chairman of the Council, Rodney raised the Armed Forces Day Flag and SHDC Priory Roads offices, with military personal in attendance . Approximately 11,600 households are being urged to tell South Holland District Council if they are claiming council tax discounts they are not entitled to. The council gives a 25 per cent council tax dis-count to more than 11,600 households where there is only one adult resident at the property. In the last financial year, this totalled more than £3.4million. The council will shortly be working with a third party to compare its council tax information with other databases. This will identify those cases where more than one adult is living at an address and a discount is still being claimed. Council tax payers can contact South Holland District Council’s Revenues service by ringing 01775 761161 and select option 4 or email [email protected]. As part of National Licensing Week held in June, SHDC highlighted the essential work that goes on behind the scenes by its licensing team, licensees, operators and regulators, ensuring safety and standards are adhered to across the district. The council’s dedicated licensing team works on a daily basis with vast array of businesses and individuals who require licensing support and appraisal. From kennels to charity collections, bingo halls to betting shops and scrap metal dealers to street traders, the licensing team works tirelessly to ensure that these businesses, amenities and leisure activities meet the standards that we all expect from them.

Cowbit Parish Council News

The playing field pavilion as you may be aware, had damage caused by a burst water pipe whilst the ‘Beast from the East’ descended upon us. Through our insurance we were able to claim for all the damage caused, new ceiling and floor and the electrical system replaced. Whilst working on the pavilion, the Parish Council resolved to completely refurbish the building. A new kitchen had been installed and the outside fascias and soffits had also been replaced. A coat of paint both inside and outside is to be done too. The pavilion can then be hired out for meetings and with it being next to the play area, can be hired out for children’s parties. New heavy duty tables and benches have now been installed on the field and ideas welcome on what you would like to see within the ‘park area’ for everyone’s enjoyment are most welcome. ROSPA is due during August for the play equipment annual inspection and the Parish Council will be guided by them as to the condition and any recommendations that should arise. The Cowbit football team no longer exists, so it was decided to turn the pitch into a 5-a- side pitch, much more inviting and manageable, updating the play area is also taking place and even though some residents asked for a dog exercise area on the field to be included, after much discussion with those residents who attended the meeting, it was resolved NOT to allow this as there is plenty of dog exercise areas over at . Residents have complained about dog poo everywhere. PLEASE be a responsible dog owner PICK UP YOUR DOGS POO. You will be fined if caught allowing your dog to foul the path. The ongoing problem with fly tipping and vehicles accessing Drain Bank North, has now been stopped as highways and IDB have put bunds across stopping access. The Parish Council would like to say a big thank you to Mr Gerald Pearson for cutting back some of the overgrown vegetation in parts around the village. If any resident wants to cut the grass verge outside their property, the Highways department have issued these instructions: > pick a quiet time when there is less traffic > wear a high-vis jacket and face oncoming traffic when at the edge of the road > check for utility covers, hidden holes and loose stones > stop mowing when people are passing Parish > not cut grass when it’s wet, if it’s raining or visibility is poor Council > not use strimmers Meetings > mow across with a push mower, if the site is sloping, but up and down with a ride-on mower 17th Sept > dispose of any grass cuttings in an appropriate manner. 7.30pm Mr Iain Hook joins us as the new Cowbit Councillor, Iain comes with a wealth of knowledge and was welcomed by all at his first meeting. The next Parish meeting is on 17th September at 7.30pm in the Village Hall. Carol Mackenzie Parish Clerk. [email protected] 01775670375

Don’t forget your pets in the hot weather!

Keep your pets comfy, cool and safe when the weather gets warm! Warm weather can be dangerous for our pets. It’s hard for pets to keep cool when the sun is beating down, because animals don’t sweat like humans, for example, dogs cool themselves through panting, and they sweat through their paws. When there is only hot air for a dog to breathe, it’s a lot harder for that dog to keep cool. Cats tolerate heat a little better than dogs, and even prefer it but that doesn’t mean that you should forget about your cat this summer! I have put together some summer safety tips for dogs and cats. * Never, ever, EVER leave your pet in a hot car. It can take minutes – yes, MINUTES –for a pet to develop heat stroke and suffocate in a car. * Keep the paws in mind. Surfaces such as asphalt can get really hot * It’s not a good idea to drive around with your dog in the bed of a truck – the hot metal can burn paws quickly . * Make sure they have water and shade. * Haircuts. If you have a pet with a thick coat, consider a haircut! One inch is a good length to avoid sunburn . * Ears; the tips the ears of cats, dogs, horses etc. are susceptible to sunburn as they only have a light covering of fur apply high factor sunscreen. * And perhaps most important, pay attention to your dog and cat – you’ll know when they seem uncomfortable or like they might be in some trouble.

Summer can be a great time to spend with your dog, cat or other pet (Rabbits, Guinea Pigs etc.), but it’s important to keep these tips in mind as the days grow longer!

STOP SPEEDING IN YOUR VILLAGE “GET INVOLVED” “COMMUNITY SPEED WATCH” We are looking for Community Speed Watch Volunteers who will not be employees and Police checks will not be needed to become a Volunteer. No expenses will be paid and everyone will have to wear high-visibility long sleeved Community Speed Watch Jackets. The high visibility nature of these checks is to show that the community cares about road safety and is safe for volunteers and motorists. The Lincolnshire Road Safety Partnership (LRSP) launched the Community Speed Watch (CSW) initiative in 2014 with the aim of enabling residents to tackle local speeding issues. In 2018 there are more than 200 parishes and town councils operating the scheme throughout the county. CSW uses highly visible passive notices coupled with battery powered speed indication devices (SIDs) to re-enforce residential speed limits. Both types of speed warnings, purchased and operated by communities, are attached to lamp posts or other available street furniture. The speed notices and SIDs are then moved around numerous sites within a community to ensure they are always fresh and impactive. Now, for the first time, CSW members can also register to carry out speed checks in a controlled and authorised manner within their own parish. Registered keepers of vehicles exceeding the speed limit will be sent letters of advice from the police. Rest assured, speed enforcement remains the responsibility of the Police and will continue to be carried out by trained police officers and staff in the roads policing, neighbourhood policing and Safety Camera teams. In addition, are introducing a specialist fatal four enforcement team using Special Constables. The newest addition to the CSW scheme is about providing a service in direct response to a clear and frequently requested desire by local communities to get involved and feel that they are contributing to making their communities safer. In addition to everything we already do we are committing extra resources and staff to oversee this new element of CSW. We will only operate in 30 & 40 mph limits during daylight hours, in areas where Town or Parish Council’s or Police have concerns about traffic speed. The volunteers will be able to run sessions as often as they like or are able. This initiative is about educating road users to be more considerate and to realise the dangers of speeding, to get speeding down and asking drivers to drive more safely. Are you interested in this new initiative, would you like to be a part of the new Community Speed Watch Scheme. Please will you tell your friends & family across the county to join in with this scheme, or become involved in setting up a new scheme in their area. We will be holding a meeting in the very near future to talk about the training and would like everyone who is interested in becoming a Volunteer to work with us, to please contact me. As soon as I have a date and a venue, I will invite you along. Please call me, Jan 07779895388 or email [email protected]; for more information.

Guthlac Dear Friends, Most of you who live in this area will be familiar with the name of Guthlac, the Anglo-Saxon monk who can be regarded as the founder of Crowland. After he came to Crowland Guthlac acquired a very good reputation on account of the good works he did for the people of this remote and sparsely populated area, a reputation so good that he came to be regarded as a saint. Although all Christians are called to be holy, as holy is technically the meaning of the word ‘saint,’ we commonly call saints those Christians whose lives are outstanding on account of their good deeds. In our churches these people are often depicted in stained glass windows with halos over their heads. And let’s be honest, these people, most of whom lived long ago, can seem to be very remote from us and from real life. Yet the interesting thing about Guthlac is that before he came to what is today Crowland he was not a very nice guy. He grew up in a world of violence, intrigue, back-stabbing, and betrayal, in short, a world of dog-eat-dog. Guthlac was very much a part of this world. He was a freebooting soldier who did his share of robbing, killing, and destroying. This was his way of life until something amazing happened: he came to know the God of Jesus Christ. When he was twenty-four years old his heart, rather like that of John Wesley many centuries later, was ‘strangely warmed’ by a mysterious encounter with God. After this experience he decided to give up his former ways and obey Jesus’ call to love our neighbours as we love ourselves. To do this he knew he had to make a complete break with his old life and his old companions, a break that eventually led him to the remote island of Crowland, deep in . He thought that by leading a simple and solitary life of prayer he might make amends for his past life and help to advance the kingdom of God. Although he tried to live in solitude, the people who lived on other islands in the area often came to him for help and advice. And so his reputation as a special man of God grew. Guthlac’s story is one I find very heartening, as it shows us that with God change is always possible for us, no matter what our previous life story may be. If the power of God working in a robber and murderer such as Guthlac can make him into a different, a better person, can’t God do the same for us? The possibility of change is something that is fundamental to the Christian faith. It is there in the water of baptism, water that stands for God’s cleansing, forgiving love. God in his love for us his children is always ready to forgive us and help us to make a new start, whenever we truly turn to him and from the depths of our hearts cry out to him in sincere sorrow for what we have done. God never forces us, but he is always there looking out for us, inviting us to turn to him and discover his way of life, the only way that can both truly satisfy us and at the same time enable us to change for the better. Just as he can bring life out of death, so God can bring good out of bad. If he had been a teenager living today Guthlac would probably have been a drug user, a gang member constantly getting into turf wars with other gangs, and more. But he would eventually have found a better way to live. So let’s all of us, young and old, for us older folk have our share of bad behavior to feel sorry about – it’s just that the sins of some of our young people are more publicly evident- take heart from Guthlac’s story. God is still very much at work in the world today. As he helped Guthlac defeat his demons, so he can help us defeat ours. Thanks be to him for offering us this help every day. Yours in Christ, Charles Brown,. 13

WESTON PARISH COUNCIL

Highways issues took centre stage at the July meeting. The Parish Council gave careful consideration to the Lincs. Road Safety Partnership proposal for the long campaigned for improving of the junction of Broadgate and Beggars Bush. LRSP have looked into various possible solutions and their proposal is to stop traffic turning on to Beggars Bush from Broadgate. Traffic would still be able to turn onto Broadgate from Beggars Bush. Broadgate from High Road to Beggars Bush would still be ‘two way’ traffic. The Parish Council voted on this proposal and by a majority decided to support its implementation, however concerns were raised that additional traffic flow would result on the Weston Hills end. It was agreed that the junction of Broadgate and Austendyke Road is also difficult because of restricted visibility. There is no indication of time scale as to when this proposal might be implemented. Although it sounds drastic the LCC Highways Public Notice of ‘stopping up’ of roads off Small Drove has no real affect - it is necessary to enable the re-development of the site which will mean the existing paths and roadways are redundant and others will be created to serve the new properties. Cllr. Dicks was able to report good progress in getting volunteers to take part in the Community Speed Watch scheme for our Parish. This is a county wide initiative and a co-ordinator for the South Holland area has now been appointed. Let us hope that the scheme is soon rolled out ! Parish Council meetings start at 7.30pm - the next one will be on Monday 6th August at Weston Hills Village Hall and following that on Monday 3rd September at Weston Village Hall .There is always a 15 minute Open Forum at the start of the meeting for any member of the public to have their say regarding matters which affect them.

It has been a very successful term for Weston St Mary CE Primary School and there has been much to celebrate. We received our first monitoring inspection from Her Majesty’s Inspectors (HMI) and were delighted that the report we received identified many strengths within the school. A copy of the report can be found on our school website. We were also delighted to receive the ‘leader of the year’ award at the Lincolnshire Anglican Academy Trust award ceremony earlier this month. It was awarded to the Mrs Flack, Mrs Walker, Mrs Adie and Mr Lunn for their leadership of both Weston St Mary and our sister school C of E Primary School. The evening was made even more memorable by the fact that children from both schools were invited to sing during the interval, which they did with great enthusiasm.

We have enjoyed developing deeper links with our local community and were delighted to welcome over 30 members of our community to school for lunch in the Spring. These links have continued to develop, and we have since hosted a Street Party in celebration of the Royal wedding and invited local residents to our Sports Day. The children were very excited to receive complimentary visits to Baytree Owl Centre and St Lamberts Hall Farm as a result of these improving relations with the local community and we look forward to hosting more events throughout the next academic year. The children have also had many achievements to celebrate. One hundred per cent of our Year 6 pupils have received their Level 3 swimming award and have met the national curriculum requirement of swimming 25m before leaving primary school. All of our pupils have enjoyed improving their swimming skills and confidence in the pool, and have approached their weekly swimming sessions at Whaplode with enthusiasm and determination. Our Key Stage 2 children have worked hard to prepare and perform a production Hansel and Gretel. The children performed under the trees on our school field and took great care decorating the woodland area, designing props and making costumes. The performances were very well received by parents and members of the wider community and we were extremely proud of them all.

Schools have broken up for summer Paul Winn holiday, 6 weeks to drive their parents mad The original idea of a long summer holiday was so that more hands were available for the gathering the harvest. Before the days of combines. Harvest is these days an all round occupation, flowers cabbages ,cauliflowers and quite a few other things. We still give thanks to God for all the food that we have. We should remember that he is the Creator and all things started with Him. We may plant and harvest but all things come from Him. So next time you eat whether a meal or an ice cream or a Mcdonalds just remember occasionally to say thank you to God. The dates of your church Harvest are in this magazine why not come to sing ,pray and say thanks.? Paul Winn 18
