    Rutland Local History & Record Society Registered Charity No. 700273 Ketton Village Walk September 2010 (updated 2020) Copyright © Rutland Local History and Record Society All rights reserved INTRODUCTION The centre of the village contains many excellent buildings constructed with the famous butter‑coloured Ketton limestone which has been quarried locally since the Middle Ages. Ketton limestone is a 'freestone' because it can be worked in any direction. It is regarded as the perfect example of oolitic limestone. Many of the stone buildings are roofed in Collyweston slates. These frost-split slates have been extracted from shallow mines at Collyweston and Easton on the Hill just The Priory about 1925. (Jack Hart Collection) across the Valley from Ketton. This walk has been prepared from notes left by the late Geoff Fox and the late Jeffrey Smith, with some additions. THE VILLAGE MAP The map attached to this guided walk is based on the 25 inch to one mile Ordnance Survey 2nd edition map of 1899. Consequently, later buildings, extensions and demolitions are not shown. Numbers in the text, e.g. [12], refer to locations shown on the maps. Please: Respect private property. Use pavements and footpaths where available. Take great care when crossing roads. The church lychgate about 1925. (Jack Hart Collection) Remember that you are responsible for your own safety. The lychgate, of English oak and roofed with Collyweston slates, was erected by George Hibbins, THE WALK stonemason of Ketton, in 1909. This is a circular walk which starts and finishes at the Pass through the lychgate and walk to the Railway Inn.

    Groundwater in Jurassic carbonates Field Excursion to the Lincolnshire Limestone: Karst development, source protection and landscape history 25 June 2015 Tim Atkinson (University College London) with contributions from Andrew Farrant (British Geological Survey) Introduction 1 The Lincolnshire Limestone is an important regional aquifer. Pumping stations at Bourne and other locations along the eastern edge of the Fens supply water to a large population in South Lincolnshire. Karst permeability development and rapid groundwater flow raise issues of groundwater source protection, one of themes of this excursion. A second theme concerns the influence of landscape development on the present hydrogeology. Glacial erosion during the Middle Pleistocene re-oriented river patterns and changed the aquifer’s boundary conditions. Some elements of the modern groundwater flow pattern may be controlled by karstic permeability inherited from pre-glacial conditions, whereas other flow directions are a response to the aquifer’s current boundary conditions. Extremely high permeability is an important feature in part of the confined zone of the present-day aquifer and the processes that may have produced this are a third theme of the excursion. The sites to be visited will demonstrate the rapid groundwater flow paths that have been proved by water tracing, whereas the topography and landscape history will be illustrated by views during a circular tour from the aquifer outcrop to the edge of the Fenland basin and back. Quarry exposures will be used to show the karstification of the limestone, both at outcrop and beneath a cover of mudrock. Geology and Topography The Middle Jurassic Lincolnshire Limestone attains 30 m thickness in the area between Colsterworth and Bourne and dips very gently eastwards.

    King’s Cliffe: The Rockingham Forest Connection (With acknowledgments to our sources: ‘Rockingham Forest Revisited’ by Dr Peter Hill; ‘The Royal Forests of Northants 1558 – 1714’ by P A J Pettit; and ‘The Royal Forests of England’ by J Charles Cox.) Some early history … The ancient woodlands of the Rockingham Forest area were once part of a great prehistoric forest which stretched from Peterborough to Oxford. Stone Age man settled in the area and neolithic remains have been found in places such as Gretton, Oundle, Twywell, Weldon, Wansford and Brigstock. Bronze Age finds include pottery at Oundle, Corby, Weldon and Wakerley; a skeleton and bronze dagger near Corby; several burial sites; and a drinking cup at Fotheringay. Iron Age people are known to have settled on three pieces of high ground in the area – at Rockingham, Wadenhoe and at Wakerley. Remains of iron smelting furnaces at Wakerley show that our ancestors were already making use of iron ore deposits. The smelting process needed a lot of heat and they made charcoal to fuel their furnaces. The Romans also made use of the iron ore deposits. Extensive iron smelting from the Roman period has been unearthed close to Bulwick and in Bedford Purlieu woods. Roman occupation was not just a temporary affair. They drove a road west from Ermine Street running from Wansford to the foot of the hill outside King’s Cliffe. They also built villas in the area. Tessellated pavements have been excavated near Deene, at Lowick and Weekley, and a villa and large mosaics was found in the grounds of Apethorpe Hall in 1859.

It is supported through the Creative People and Places initiative What is Community Events? In 2014, the very successful Community Events strand worked with dozens of community organisers to bring arts activities to over twenty different local events, enabling thousands of people from all over Boston Borough and South Holland to experience quality, innovative and accessible art. In 2015, the Transported programme is focusing on developing long- term partnerships to promote sustainability. For this reason, this year, we are working with a smaller number of community event organisers from around Boston Borough and South Holland to collaboratively deliver a more streamlined programme of activity. Who is Zoomorphia? Zoomorphia provides participatory arts workshops run by artist Julie Willoughby. Julie specialises in family drop-in workshops at events and festivals. In 2015, Zoomorphia will be bringing a series of events with the theme “Paper Parade” to community events across Boston Borough and South Holland. Participants will learn simple techniques to turn colourful paper and card into large displays or individual souvenirs. Continue ahead past old school Walk Outline: (1907), then LEFT in front of the cemetery entrance to follow path around cemetery. At the corner pass through the kissing gate then RIGHT over This final section has a dramatic walk high above the Holywell Quarry disused railway bridge. At the next gate two waymarks point in similar followed by a route through Pickworth Great Wood, reputed to be the quietest directions to the left. A few yards beyond the path divides. Take the LEFT fork place in all England and then across John Clare country along The Drift, an old (initially straight ahead) and maintain a southerly direction then south/south drove road. Our reconnaissance groups could not agree which was the best east to arrive at a finger post on the roadside at gap in hedge. Cross over the route into Stamford and therefore we decided to publish both routes, one via road to another finger post to continue direction down to the field bottom, Ryhall and Belmsthorpe and the other direct to Stamford from Tolethorpe. then up the slope to pass dilapidated farm buildings left, shown on map as Whichever route you choose it will be a fitting end to a magnificent School Farm. Ahead to power post with waymark then FORWARD to cross recreational walk through some wonderful countryside.
