School District U-46 Job Description Information Services Department SCHOOL DISTRICT U-46 JOB DESCRIPTION INFORMATION SERVICES DEPARTMENT SYSTEMS ENGINEER JOB DESCRIPTION REVISION DATE: 8/21/2015 POSITION TITLE: Systems Engineer DEPARTMENT: Information Services REPORTS TO: Director of Information Services SUPERVISES: None POSITION GOAL: Implement, troubleshoot, analyze and maintain the information technology infrastructure environment; including network switching, routing, connectivity, wireless, network security, firewalls, Windows server administration, Linux server administration, server virtualization, enterprise Storage Area Network (SAN), data backup/restore, Windows desktop imaging, and Windows desktop management. Identify, research and resolve technical problems. Familiar with a variety of the technology networking and infrastructure concepts, practices, and procedures. Rely on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals. Perform a variety of complicated information technology tasks, and provides support for escalated trouble tickets. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: 1. Respond and resolve departmental requests and reports of exceptions regarding information technology infrastructure in a professional, timely, and efficient manner. 2. Take ownership of infrastructure issues, applying best practices, internal tools, and advanced techniques, exhausting all available resources to resolve before escalation. 3. Capture accurate, succinct information regarding issues as they occur, using the District’s Help Desk system to enhance management processes. 4. Facilitate communications about changes within the Information Services environment. 5. Embrace ITIL (formerly known as Information Technology Infrastructure Library) as the framework and structure to provide customer support to our organization. 6. Other duties as assigned. KNOWLEDGE AND CRITICAL SKILLS: 1. Current enterprise-class infrastructure/system engineering experience in networking, server 5/12/08 Rev 2 HR-STR-F009 Page 1 of 3 platforms, storage, and virtualization 2. Experience implementing and managing the following technologies: Microsoft Active Directory, Microsoft Windows Server (latest version), Domain Name System (DNS), Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP), Cisco IOS internetwork operating system, VMware ESXi virtual machine monitor, Storage Area Network (SAN) technology (Dell Compellent), SuSE Linux operating system, NetIQ Identity Manager, Novell ZENworks Configuration Manager, wireless networks (preferably Cisco Merakii and Meru) 3. Experience managing desktop infrastructure, preferably using Novell ZENworks Configuration Manager or Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager (SCCM) 4. Strong customer service focus. 5. Superior problem solving skills with excellent communication and broad technical abilities. 6. Ability to maintain a positive and constructive attitude and to work effectively in a dynamic work environment. 7. Organized, highly motivated. and able to prioritize and multi-task. 8. 3-10 years of dedicated technical work experience 9. College Bachelor’s degree (preferred) or equivalent work experience 10. Cisco & Microsoft Certifications are preferred Comments: The knowledge and critical skills listed above are typical for this position; however, any equivalent combination of education, training, and/or experience, may be acceptable. ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS: 1. Indoors in a busy technology environment. 2. Frequently work at a fast pace with unscheduled interruptions. 3. Required to leave the main work site. 4. Public contact requiring appropriate business-like apparel. PHYSICAL DEMANDS: 1. Ability to work in a very fast paced and stressful environment. 2. Ability to work on a computer over a major portion of the work day. 3. Ability to lift up to 40 pounds of server and network equipment.
