The development of settlements and the history of Longyearbyen A group of houses and buildings for a number of persons may appear to be a town or settlement, but does not necessarily constitute a community. It takes a certain permanency, a level of physical and social infrastructure and at least some degree of demographic variety before we can use the term (local) community. There are many short-lived settlements on Svalbard, with a varying degree of community features, such as Advent City (1905–08), Hiorthhamn (1917–26) or Tunheim on Bjørnøya (1915–25). These are examples of mining camps that hardly had the potential or ambition to become permanent communities. The American Arctic Coal Co. probably never intended to develop their “camp” Longyear City (1906–15) into a full-fledged local society, and little changed when Store Norske took over in 1916. The same seems to be true for the first phases of mining settlements like the Dutch Barentsburg (1920-26), the Swedish Sveagruvan (1917– 25) and Norwegian Ny-Ålesund (1917–29). Ny-Ålesund closed mining in 1929, but functioned as a fishery station in the 1930s. Coalmining was reopened in 1945 and continued until 1963. In this period there were families living in the town too. Thereafter, Ny-Ålesund has become a research station. The Soviet Trust Arktikugol started coal mining in Grumant and Barentsburg in 1931–32, expanding rapidly. There were a few women and small children, but nothing like a family community. From 1949 Pyramiden was built up.

On 12 March all universities in Norway were closed down. UNIS had at that time 180 regular course students. Our main task became to ensure that all of our students would receive their study credits and maintain the planned study progress. The lectures and seminars went digital. Thanks to our skilled staff that quickly adapted to digital learning despite working from home. The exam success rate of 97% speaks for itself. Jøran Moen is managing director of UNIS. Ulvang Mastergradsoppgave i nordisk språkvitenskap Fakultet for humaniora, samfunnsvitenskap og lærerutdanning Institutt for språkvitenskap Universitetet i Tromsø Høsten 2012 Forord I mitt tidligere liv tilbragte jeg to år som radiotelegrafist (1964-66) og ett år som stasjonssjef (1975-76) ved Isfjord Radio1 på Kapp Linné. Dette er nok bakgrunnen for at jeg valgte å skrive en masteroppgave om stedsnavn på Svalbard. Seks delemner har utgjort halve mastergradsstudiet, og noen av disse førte meg tilbake til arktiske strøk. En semesteroppgave omhandlet Norske skipsnavn2, der noen av navna var av polarskuter. En annen omhandlet Språkmøte på Svalbard3, en sosiolingvistisk studie fra Longyearbyen. Den førte meg tilbake til øygruppen, om ikke fysisk så i hvert fall mentalt. Det samme har denne masteroppgaven gjort. Jeg har også vært student ved Universitetet i Tromsø tidligere. Jeg tok min cand. philol.-grad ved Institutt for historie høsten 2000 med hovedfagsoppgaven Telekommunikasjoner på Spitsbergen 1911-1935. Jeg vil takke veilederen min, professor Gulbrand Alhaug for den flotte oppfølgingen gjennom hele prosessen med denne masteroppgaven om stedsnavn på Svalbard. Han var også min foreleser og veileder da jeg tok mellomfagstillegget i nordisk språk med oppgaven Frå Amarius til Pardis. Manns- og kvinnenavn i Alstahaug og Stamnes 1850-1900.4 Jeg takker også alle andre som på en eller annen måte har hjulpet meg i denne prosessen. Dette gjelder bl.a. Norsk Polarinstitutt, som velvillig lot meg bruke deres database med stedsnavn på Svalbard, men ikke minst vil jeg takke min kjære Anne-Marie for hennes tålmodighet gjennom hele prosessen.

In this study, we analysed the changes in the position of Hiorthhamn shoreline (Svalbard), which is affecting coastal cultural heritage sites, for a period of 93 years (1927–2020). Shoreline changes were mapped by using maps, ortophotos, drone images, terrestrial laser scanning (TLS), and topographic surveys. Also, TLS was used to 3D document the endangered coastal cultural heritage sites. Detailed sedimentological and mor- phological mapping was made in the field and from the newly acquired drone images in order to understand shoreline-landscape interaction and to depict changes occurring from 2019 to 2020.
