The ordination of Rev. Ruslan Romanyuk by Archbishop Stefan Soroka of the Ukrainian Catholic Archeparchy of Philadelphia was held at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Philadelphia, PA on September 20, 2009.

Among those who celebrated with Rev. Ruslan Romanyuk were members of his family including his mother, wife, and son.

The entire clergy and faithful of the Ukrainian Catholic Archeparchy of Philadelphia offer our joyous wishes and greetings to Rev. Ruslan Romanyuk as he continues his journey of service to our Lord and to all of our people.

September 27, 2009 12 JUBILEE CONCERT OF SACRED CHORAL MUSIC

On Saturday October 10 at 7:30 p.m., Holy Family Ukrainian Catholic Parish will celebrate its 60th anniversary with a concert of Ukrainian liturgical music. The program features the Yevshan Ukrainian Vocal Ensemble of Connecticut. This event offers a unique opportunity to hear selections from three centuries of sacred choral music in the acoustically-rich setting of the Ukrainian Catholic National Shrine at 4250 Harewood Road, NE, Washington, DC. As Holy Family Parish looks to the future, the preservation and development of liturgical music is of paramount importance.

In the Ukrainian Church, whether Orthodox or Greek Catholic, the role of the choir is to promote an intimate dialogue between the Word of God and the soul of Man. In most Eastern Churches, liturgy is incomplete without music. It is a vital element in the liturgical life of Eastern Christians. The Ukrainian Church has developed a unique fusion of Eastern and Western musical traditions combining classical and folk traditions.

Aware of the challenges that stand before every choir whenever it sings sacred music, the Yevshan Ukrainian Vocal Ensemble devotes considerable time to studying and promoting Ukrainian folk and classical liturgical music. Its members hail from all around the state of Connecticut and perform a repertoire of ancient liturgical chants of Eastern Christendom as well as classical compositions from the 18th through the 21st centuries. The October 10th program will feature the works of Dmytro Bortniansky, Artem Vedel, Mykola Leontovych, Kyrylo Stetsenko, Yevhen Stankîvych and others.

Music Director Alexander Kuzma is a graduate of the Hartt School of Music and Yale University. A native of Hartford, Connecticut, he is the former director of the Yale Russian Chorus (1974-1977) and has served as a parish choirmaster in Boston (1981-1989), Hartford (1987-1992) and New Haven (1996-2002). From 1996 to the present he serves as music director of Yevshan.

On Sunday October 11th at 10:30 am. Yevshan will sing the responses during a Pontifical Divine Liturgy at the Ukrainian Catholic National Shrine of the Holy Family.

September 27, 2009 15 PARISHIONERS GATHER TO CELEBRATE UKRAINIAN INDEPENDENCE DAY On Monday evening, August 24, 2009, about 200 parishioners of St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic parish, Passaic, NJ gathered on the front plaza of the church, to celebrate and witness the Celebration of the Independence of Ukraine on the 18th Anniversary.

As the afternoon sun shown down on the group gathered, several young children of the parish dressed in Ukrainian embroidered shirts and blouses, led the procession of altar boys and Fr. Andriy Dudkevych from the church’s front doors to the outdoor altar for the celebration of Moleben to the Mother of God, in thanksgiving for the blessings and freedom that our brothers and sisters in Ukraine have been struggling with since 1991.

The altar was adorned with an Icon of Our Lady as candles glowed and colorful mums reflected the joy of the people and the occasion.

As the Moleben service began at 6:00 pm, many had just finished work and yet took the time and made the effort to come and pray and celebrate. Fr. Andriy in his homily spoke of the difficulties and blessings our people are experiencing. He expressed his elation in seeing so many in attendance. Fr. Andriy also expressed that it is his wish that the celebration of the Independence of Ukraine be celebrated by the parish and the entire community on August 24th every year …”this should be an annual event of the parish with all civic and Ukrainian organizations coming together on the actual day of our Independence”. Fr. Andriy then invited Mr. Antin Mykych and Mr. Mykhaylo Paranchak to come forward to raise the Ukrainian flag, with all the children surrounding them. As the flag was raised, the yellow and blue of the flag fluttered in the breeze and stood out against the bright blue sky while everyone sang the Ukrainian National anthem. Fr. Andriy thanked everyone for their attendance and invited them to a short Concert/Program of Ukrainian songs and music, which was followed by a “Wine and Cheese” Social prepared by the young women of the parish.

This event was also part of the Pre-Centennial celebration preparations for St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church. The official opening of our “100 Year Celebration” will be on December 6, 2009, the Feast of St. Nicholas, Patron Saint of the parish. September 27, 2009 17 Ukrainian Flag Raising Ceremony in Toms River, NJ

St. Stephen Ukrainian Catholic Parish celebrated the 18th anniversary of Ukraine’s Independence with a flag- raising ceremony in front of the Ocean County Administration Building in Toms River, NJ. With many Ukrainian organizations and about 3,000 Ukrainians living in the Ocean County area, the Ukrainian Independence Day is marked annually in this community. The parishioners of St. Stephen Church attended the ceremony this year and were proud to see how the blue-and- yellow Ukrainian flag flew over the city for a one day. Various city officials attended the ceremony and issued a proclamation in honor of Ukrainian Independence.

Ihor Dworjan, a member of the Ukrainian American Club of Ocean County delivered a beautiful speech describing the centuries-long struggle of the Ukrainian nation seeking reinstatement of the independence they so wanted and deserved. In his remarks Mr, Dworjan, said that for us Ukrainian Americans in Diaspora, 1991 was the answer to uncountable prayers and the reward for many sacrificed lives.

Ukraine today is a beautiful, complicated and inspiring country. It is a democracy. And it is changing every day, in every way. Some people feel this change now, others will feel it later. For some the change is exhilarating, for others it is frightening and hard. But for the first time in our history, we take pride in our language and history and culture, we have our Independence and our freedom and our identity.

The Rev. Ivan Turyk – pastor of St. Stephen Parish, delivered the spiritual blessing in which he wishes the Ukrainian people strength and courage as they rebuild their state from the ruins of communism and implement the necessary reforms needed to establish a truly independent state.

September 27, 2009 18 Ukrainian Festival at St. Stephen Church in Toms River, NJ

On Saturday, August 22, 2009, it rained everywhere, but not on many visitors, who attended the Second Annual St. Stephen’s Ukrainian Festival, located at 1344 White Oak Bottom Road, Toms River, New Jersey. Beyond our expectations, the church grounds swelled with neighbors and those who traveled quite a distance, primarily Ukrainian-Americans, but mostly non-Ukrainians, to appreciate Ukrainian culture, crafts, foods and entertainment. Reverend Ivan Turyk, Pastor of St. Stephen Church, was elated with the overwhelming support and good will shared by all during this family and community oriented event.

Everywhere at this well-organized, fun-filled Festival, people could be seen enjoying themselves, eating the delicious Ukrainian food, and there certainly was plenty for everyone, listening to lively Ukrainian music, socializing with friends and neighbors, and enjoying the entertainment of our incredible Ukrainian dance performances.

People came to the Ukrainian Festival for a variety of reasons, and one of the biggest attractions was the food. It seems everyone loves Ukrainian food. Everywhere, people gathered at indoor and outdoor tables eating borscht, varenky, holubtsi and kovbasa. There were hundreds of delicious home-made cakes and pastries, all of which were consumed by the end of the Festival. Also offered were a variety of special Ukrainian beers, bottled water, soft drinks, tea and coffee, and an indoor and outdoor bar. Adding to the festivities, guests were entertained by a live band, singing and dancing, plus a fabulous concert presented by a Ukrainian Dancers from Perth Amboy, NJ. Other attractions included children’s games, hot dogs, ice cream, Gift Basket Raffles, Vendors, and even a raffle for the Bermuda Cruise that St. Stephen’s church is sponsoring in June 2010.

We cordially invite everyone to next year’s festival on Saturday, August 22nd. A great time will be had by all.
