This is the pinnacle of our sailing season, with the crews having already competed in Brisbane, Tasmania and Sydney. This year is also the first time that crews will be competing for the John Calvert-Jones Trophy, named after Australia’s first world champion and the only Australian to win a world championship overseas. John will be watching the regatta aboard Kokomo this weekend. The Australian series scoreboard is very busy at the top, with Transfusion currently holding the lead, followed closely by Kokomo and Estate Master. Other boats to keep an eye out for include Voodoo Chile, Lambourdini and Edake (who won the Corinthian award in last week’s NSW State Titles), as all showed good speed last weekend. POW, the new entry from Tasmania, is a genuine unknown and could be a dark horse. We are excited to be able to showcase exceptional One Design racing against the backdrop of Sydney’s magnificent harbour and anticipate highly competitive, international standard racing among the crews. We have eight Sydney boats competing in the fleet this weekend and these have been joined by two interstate boats who have travelled to be a part of this event. This fleet of ten boats is largest to have participated in many years, which will lead to a wonderful spectacle on Sydney Harbour. All crews have been out on the water honing their skills for the unpredictability of racing in the congested Sydney Harbour, with crews having to deal with the many ferries and other race and spectator craft. We look forward to you joining us for a wonderful weekend of sailing. Contact us www.aberdeenasset.com.au [email protected] 4 The Aberdeen Asset Management Farr 40 Australian Series About Farr 40 Farr 40 sailing is a contest between evenly matched 40-foot racing boats, helmed by their skilled and competitive amateur owners and guided by world-renowned tacticians. Boats in the Farr 40 class must meet strict One Design criteria. One Design racing in Australia is widely celebrated through successful classes such as Etchells and dinghy Olympic classes including the Lasers and 470s. The Farr 40 class follows similar principles in racing and complies with specific One Design rules; boats have been built to a specific design and competing boats in the class are not permitted to make amendments to the design. Any competitive advantage must be derived by the skill of the skipper and crew. Unique to the Farr 40 class is that the One Design rules are internationally governed, dictate an owner driver rule and impose limitations on number of professional crew members. The Farr 40 fleet in Australia consists of 27 boats, 20 of which will compete in the 2012/13 Farr 40 Australia Series. Crews in this Class consist of yachting luminaries such as Tom Slingsby, Malcolm Page, Mathew Belcher, Nathan Outteridge & Nina Curtis – all successful competitors in the London 2012 Olympic Games. The New South Wales Farr 40 State Titles is the third of a three part State Title series, with previous events held in Queensland (27-28 October 2012), and Tasmania (4-6 January 2013). After finishing 3rd in the CYCA Trophy Series the team is fully aware that there will 7 be even stiffer competition at 0 these regattas. Some core team 0 members remain from the Worlds in 2011 but there have been some exciting additions. These include Evan Walker, who returned last year from coaching the Finnish girls’ match racing squad to a very credible 3rd in the Olympics. Other team additions include Don McPhee, Tim Lake, Jaidan Stevens, Boat Edake Nicki Hodgson and Dan Nixon. The team will be competing in the Sail No. 007 Corinthian division and is keen to Fleet Sydney regain the Australian Corinthian title which it last won in 2010. Although the two owners are based in different states, Enigma is constantly campaigned in both One Design and handicap regattas. David is focusing on the One Design campaigns and, after a successful start to the season with a solid performance taking out the Forgacs Newcastle regatta, he’s looking forward to the competition in Sydney. David’s team is ably led by Steve McConaghy (Macca) on Tactics, Scott Hinton (Scooter) Boat Enigma trimming and supported by Sail No. 6151 experienced Farr 40 sailors from Sydney, Melbourne and Tasmania. Michael, a Laser world champion and Sydney U Bronze medallist in the Laser Class, has recently been made AIS joint A coach of the Year, having coached Tom Slingsby to Gold in the London Olympics. Estate Master is a seasoned global Farr 40 competitor with 4 World Championship to Boat Estate Master her credit with results 15, 8, 5 & 4. The yacht’s other international Sail No. AUS 615 highlights include 1st in 2010 Pre Fleet NSW Worlds and 1st in 2011 Sydney International Regatta.     For Immediate Release: Zhik SB3 World Championships 2011 Event Preview Date: 15th May 2011 Racing for the 2011 Zhik SB3 World Championships 2011 begins on Monday 16th May and runs until Friday 20th May hosted by the Royal Torbay Yacht Club in Torquay, UK. 103 entries represent 14 nations. 2 fleets will compete in 2 days of qualifying races, before splitting into Gold and Silver Fleets for the finals races. 14 races are scheduled for the Championships. The first race will start at 1100 hrs on Monday on the beautiful waters of Torbay. The sun has shone as measurement, registration and launching of the 103 boat fleet was undertaken. Now that this is all but complete, there is great anticipation as the fleet make their final preparations to their boats for the start of racing on Monday.     Club Marine Coaching Clinic 5th – 7th April – Mornington Yacht Club Optimist Rob Brewer Sam McKay Sam comes to us from New Zealand with a wealth of experience, including top 3 placings at the NZ Nationals in each of the Optimist, P Class, 420 and Starling classes. He was a member of the Nations Cup winning NZ team at the 2007 Optimist Worlds and placed in the top 20 in the 2008 Optimist Worlds. Sam is also an accomplished Match Racer, winning the NZ Youth Match Racing Nationals in 2014. Sam has been coaching since 2009. As Head Coach at Worser Bay Boating Club, Sam designed the program that saw the club achieve its best ever NZ Nationals result in 2015, including the National Champion. He was also invited by a club near Boston (USA) to spend last northern summer to run their race squad program. Sam spent this summer in Australia and was part of the VIODA coaching team for World Cup Melbourne and the Nationals. Minnow Paul Rogers Started coaching at Blairgowrie Yacht Club in 2005. Head Coach in the Victorian Minnow Association 2012 - present. Sailing Background - First boat was an old Minnow, sailed minnows for 4 years before moving onto Lasers. Followed the YV pathway program and then moved into 14ft Skiffs for a number of years. Highlights / Achievements - Successfully coaching 5 sailors into the top 10 at the Minnow Nationals over the past 4 Nationals. I am also proud to see the Minnow class holding strong as a sailing community filled with wonderful sailors and supportive parents.
