With his history of the medical college at Woodstock, Vermont, which the Society had the honor to publish in 1945, this completes the story of the medical colleges in Vermont which had a great influence on a national scale until the Civil War interrupted. The projected history of the Medical Department of the University of Vermont, by another author, when completed and published, should bring up to date the history of all medical educational institutions in Vermont. It is impossible to praise too highly the great devotion and research and effort freely contributed by Dr. Waite. Many years have passed since he first considered it, and was urged to complete it, at his own expense. The Rutland County Medical Society has given $100 and Mr. George Adam Ellis has given $1,000 to pay for some of the expenses of preparation and publication which could not be met by the Society or by Dr. Waite. There have been other contributions of money and time. -

International Mechanical Engineering Heritage Collection Designated September 12, 1992 The American Society of Mechanical Engineers INTRODUCTION It has been said that an operating steam engine is ‘visual music’. The New England Museum of Wireless and Steam provides the steam engine enthusiast, the mechanical engineer and the public at large with an opportunity to experience the ‘music’ when the engines are in steam. At the same time they can appreciate the engineering skills of those who designed the engines. The New England Museum of Wireless and Steam is unusual among museums in its focus on one aspect of mechanical engineering history, namely, the history of the steam engine. It is especially rich in engines manufactured in Rhode Island, a state which has had an influence on the history of the steam engine in the United States out of all proportion to its size and population. Many of the great names in the design and manufacture of steam engines received their training in Rhode Island, most particularly in the shops of the Corliss Steam Engine Co. in Providence. George H. Corliss, an important contributor to steam engine technology, founded his company in Providence in 1846. Engines that used his patent valve gear were built in large numbers by the Corliss company, and by others, both in the United States and abroad, either under license or in various modified forms once the Corliss patent expired in 1870. The New England Museum of Wireless and Steam is particularly fortunate in preserving an example of a Corliss engine built by the Corliss Steam Engine Company. -

Volume IV, No. 1 JANUARY, 1930 Whole Number 23 George Henry Corliss, Engineer and Business Man THE full development of an art has always required two types of invention. No new thing under the sun ever came full fledged into being, and the pioneers in every art have necessarily left their in- ventions in sketchy form, the detailed arrangements which made them really practical being filled in by later comers. A package of letters patent, correspondence, etc., coming from Providence, Rhode Island, shed some personal sidelights on the history of a man, Mr. George Henry Corliss, who made a most im- portant contribution of the second type to the development of the steam engine. The first steam engine that ran, like most new in- ventions, was an inefficient affair. A walking-beam, arranged like a teeter-board, supported at one end a pump-rod, which hung down the mine shaft, and at the other, the moving piston of the engine which hung down its closely fitting upright cylinder. The weight of the pump-rod was greater than that of the piston and its rod. It therefore pulled the piston to the top of the cylinder, draw- ing in after it a cylinderful of steam of only atmospheric or " tea- kettle" pressure- To pull the pump-rod up again, this steam was condensed by spraying water into the cylinder. A vacuum, more or less complete, was thus created under the piston, whereupon the pressure of the atmosphere on its top pushed it down. -

The 1876 Centennial Exposed: How Souvenir Publications Reveal Contrasting Attitudes of Race and Gender in the Post-bellum United States Hope Hancock Mellon Scholars 1 “I declare the International Exhibition now open” President Ulysses S. Grant announces on the morning of May 10, 1876.1 Crowds roar as the American flag rises to the top of the Main Building.2 The chorus, orchestra, and organ join together in Handel’s “Hallelujah Chorus,” while a parade of dignitaries and 4,000 specially invited guests pave the way to Machinery Hall where the Corliss engine stands.3 The engine, providing enough energy to power all of the machines on the fairgrounds, with Image of the Corliss Engine from Frank Leslie’s Illustrated Historical Register of the Centennial Exposition, 1876 2,500 horsepower, is a forty-five foot tall steel giant and masterpiece of American engineering.4 President Grant and Brazilian Emperor Dom Pedro II ascend the engine’s platform, and at the signal of inventor George H. Corliss, they turn the wheels to arouse the engine from its slumber.5 As the engine awakes, the rest of the machines in the hall take their first breath and the Exhibition comes to life. Cheers erupt as the doors to all exhibits open, and spectators begin exploring the fairgrounds. The grounds display everything from food and fine art to extraordinary industrial machines.
