Abstract: Revision of the species Hemidiadema rugosum AGASSIZ, 1846, and H. neocomiense (COTTEAU, 1869) (Euechinoidea, Camarodonta, Glyphocyphidae) from the Lower Cretaceous of the Basin of Paris (France).- Hemidiadema rugosum AGASSIZ, 1846, and H. neocomiense (COT- TEAU, 1869) are small and poorly known "regular" echinoid species. They were the source of much con- fusion due to their rarity and the inadequacy of their original descriptions. Both species are revised here to clarify their differences and taxonomic status. This revision is based on six specimens of H. rugosum (including the holotype, not shown by its original author), all from the locus typicus and stra- tum typicum (Clansayesian [Upper Aptian sensu gallico] "Grès ferrugineux" from Grandpré, Ardennes) and on a single specimen of H. neocomiense from the stratum typicum (Lower Hauterivian (? Lyticoce- ras nodosoplicatum Zone) "Calcaire à Spatangues" from Ville-sur-Saulx (Meuse), a locality near to the locus typicus (Auxerre, Yonne)). For this latter species, a neotype is designated to replace the holotype that is lost. Remarks on the paleoecology and stratigraphic and geographic distributions of these two species are given. The revision of these two species provides an opportunity to propose an emended diagnosis of the genus Hemidiadema AGASSIZ, 1846, a poorly known member of the Glyphocyphidae. Hopkins and Smith, SI Appendix SI Appendix for Hopkins, Melanie J, and Smith, Andrew B. Dynamic evolutionary change in post-Paleozoic echinoids and the importance of scale when interpreting changes in rates of evolution. Corrections to character matrix Before running any analyses, we corrected a few errors in the published character matrix of Kroh and Smith (1). Specifically, we removed the three duplicate records of Oligopygus, Haimea, and Conoclypus, and removed characters C51 and C59, which had been excluded from the phylogenetic analysis but mistakenly remain in the matrix that was published in Appendix 2 of (1). We also excluded Anisocidaris, Paurocidaris, Pseudocidaris, Glyphopneustes, Enichaster, and Tiarechinus from the character matrix because these taxa were excluded from the strict consensus tree (1). This left 164 taxa and 303 characters for calculations of rates of evolution and for the principal coordinates analysis. Other tree scaling methods The most basic method for scaling a tree using first appearances of taxa is to make each internal node the age of its oldest descendent ("stand") (2), but this often results in many zero-length branches which are both theoretically questionable and in some cases methodologically problematic (3). Several methods exist for modifying zero-length branches. In the case of the results shown in Figure 1, we assigned a positive length to each zero-length branch by having it share time equally with a preceding, non-zero-length branch (“equal”) (4). However, we compared the results from this method of scaling to several other methods. First, we compared this with rates estimated from trees scaled such that zero-length branches share time proportionally to the amount of character change along the branches (“prop”) (5), a variation which gave almost identical results as the method used for the “equal” method (Fig.

The fauna is characteristic for the Upper Eocene; Middte Eocene and Lower Otigocene species are subordinate. Comparisons with described faunas indicate Southern Atpine affinity. Introduction Upper Eocene formations of the Buda Hiiis are rich in echinoids. Collection and publication of the fauna started in the 19th century. A pioneer worker was ELEK PÁVAY (1874), who studied the echinoid fauna of the Bryozoa and Buda Marls, and described several new species. At the turn of the century and during the first decades of the 20th century faunal lists were published only on the echinoids of the 7VMfnmM/nes-D/scocyc7ma limestone. A list of the Martinovics-hegy locality was published by LŐRENTHEY (1897) and another by LŐWY (1928). The study of SZÖRÉNYI (1929) played an extremely important role in the investigation of the Buda Hills echinoids. Describing the fauna of the Buda Marl, a detailed discussion was provided on the material of new collections, too.

Index of Living and Fossil Echinoids 1924-1970 PORTER M. KIER and MARY HURD LAWSON SMITHSONIAN CONTRIBUTIONS TO PALEOBIOLOGY NUMBER 34 SERIES PUBLICATIONS OF THE SMITHSONIAN INSTITUTION Emphasis upon publication as a means of "diffusing knowledge" was expressed by the first Secretary of the Smithsonian. In his formal plan for the Institution, Joseph Henry outlined a program that included the following statement: "It is proposed to publish a series of reports, giving an account of the new discoveries in science, and of the changes made from year to year in all branches of knowledge." This theme of basic research has been adhered to through the years by thousands of titles issued in series publications under the Smithsonian imprint, commencing with Smithsonian Contributions to Knowledge in 1848 and continuing with the following active series: Smithsonian Contributions to Anthropology Smithsonian Contributions to Astrophysics Smithsonian Contributions to Botany Smithsonian Contributions to the Earth Sciences Smithsonian Contributions to the Marine Sciences Smithsonian Contributions to Paleobiology Smithsonian Contributions to Zoology Smithsonian Studies in Air and Space Smithsonian Studies in History and Technology In these series, the Institution publishes small papers and full-scale monographs that report the research and collections of its various museums and bureaux or of professional colleagues in the world cf science and scholarship. The publications are distributed by mailing lists to libraries, universities, and similar institutions throughout the world. Papers or monographs submitted for series publication are received by the Smithsonian Institution Press, subject to its own review for format and style, only through departments of the various Smithsonian museums or bureaux, where the manuscripts are given substantive review.

The lantern is powered by various paired and unpaired muscle groups. We describe how one set of these muscles, the lantern protractor muscles, has evolved a specialized morphology. This morphology is characterized by the formation of adaxially-facing lobes perpendicular to the main orientation of the muscle, giving the protractor a frilled aspect in horizontal section. Histological and ultrastructural analyses show that the microstructure of frilled muscles is largely identical to that of conventional, flat muscles. Measurements of muscle dimensions in equally-sized specimens demonstrate that the frilled muscle design, in comparison to that of the flat muscle type, considerably increases muscle volume as well as the muscle’s surface directed towards the interradial cavity, a compartment of the peripharyngeal coelom. Scanning electron microscopical observations reveal that the insertions of frilled and flat protractor muscles result in characteristic muscle scars on the stereom, reflecting the shapes of individual muscles.
