OTTON ranklin Delano Roosevelt’s (FDR) public image rose in his first Fterm, fell in his second, and rebounded in his third. The essen- tial focus of this paper is to examine how FDR portrayed himself to the public, as well as explain the tumultuous nature of his image over his three terms. This is significant, as other scholarship has overlooked this important part, leaving the understanding of FDR lacking. Other scholarship focuses mostly on policy and politics when concerned with FDR’s speeches, specifically the fireside chats, and the potential societal, economic, cultural, etc. impact the speech might have had. Davis Houck is a good exception to that. He has a discussion of FDR trying to insert the traits of a dictator into his pub- lic image, which one will discuss later.1 Even when looking at rhetoricians, many spend their time discussing the particular way FDR used language to be effectively persuasive. -

My name is Matthew Heafey and I am excited to serve as your chair for SMUNC 2020 in Franklin D. Roosevelt’s Brain Trust. I’m currently a sophomore, studying Political Science and Math, from the Bay Area, just about half an hour north of Stanford’s campus. I’ve participated in Model UN for about six years at this point, including attending SMUNC four times, and chairing SMUNC once before. Outside of Model UN, I love singing with my a cappella group, Stanford Talisman, and running, reading, and swimming. I’m looking forward to an educational and exciting committee, taking full advantage of the benefits that our virtual conference will provide us with and making the most of this conference. I hope this committee will provide you with the ability to explore such an important period of American and World history, one with strong connections to our modern world. Our committee will take place immediately following the inauguration of Franklin Delano Roosevelt to the presidency of the United States of America, in the height of the Great Depression. Agricultural and economic crises have ravaged the United States, and have fed political unrest, with reformers and revolutionaries of various political alignments pushing for the reconstruction of the country along their vision. -

History/Individual Interdisciplinary Program The Forgotten Man: The Rhetorical Construction of Class and Classlessness in Depression Era Media (206 pp.) Co-Directors of Dissertation: Katherine Jellison and Raymie McKerrow The following study is an analysis of visual and narrative cultural discourses during the interwar years of 1920-1941. These years, specifically those of the 1930s, represent a significant transitional point in American history regarding cultural identity and social class formation. This study seeks to present one profile of how the use of media contributed to a mythic cultural identity of the United States as both classless and middle-class simultaneously. The analysis is interdisciplinary by design and purports to highlight interaction between visual and oral rhetorical strategies used to construct and support the complex myths of class as they formed during this period in American history. These “fireside chats” were intended to assuage public fears about various aspects of the Depression. Chapter 24 Section 1: The End of Prosperity In this section you will learn that after the stock market crashed on October 29, 1929, many Americans lost their jobs and life savings. Chapter 24.1 Section Summary Many Americans believed that the stock market was a bull market , or one with rising stock prices. Many people began buying on margin —purchasing stocks on credit with a loan from their stockbroker. This type of activity is known as speculation —putting money into a high-risk investment in hopes of making a big profit. Few people considered the danger of a bear market , a time of declining stock prices. Then the stock market crashed on October 29, 1929. Many people lost everything they had. Business and political leaders tried to convince people that the economy was fine. -

Franklin Roosevelt and Presidential Power John Yoo* Along with George Washington and Abraham Lincoln, Franklin D. Roosevelt is considered by most scholars to be one of our nation's greatest presidents. FDR confronted challenges simultaneously that his predecessors had faced individually. Washington guided the nation's founding when doubts arose as to whether Americans could establish an effective government. FDR radically re-engineered the government into the modern administrative state when Americans doubted whether their government could provide them with economic security. Lincoln saved the country from the greatest threat to its national security, leading it through a war that cost more American lives than any other. FDR led a reluctant nation against perhaps its most dangerous foreign foe-an alliance of fascist powers that threatened to place Europe and Asia under totalitarian dictatorships. To bring the nation through both crises, FDR drew deeply upon the reservoir of executive power unlike any president before or since-reflected in his unique status as the only chief executive to break the two-term tradition. 1 * Emanuel S. Eldredge, Ph.D. Date approved: April 11, 2011 ii Abstract During the 1930s and 1940s, as the United States weathered the Great Depression, World War II, and dramatic social changes, heroes were sought out and created as part of an ever-changing national culture. American artists responded to the widespread desire for heroic imagery by creating icons of leadership and fortitude. Heroes took the form of political leaders, unionized workers, farmers, folk icons, historical characters, mothers, and women workers. The ideas they manifest are as varied as the styles and motivations of the artists who developed them. This dissertation contextualizes works by such artists as Florine Stettheimer, Philip Evergood, John Steuart Curry, Palmer Hayden, Dorothea Lange, Norman Rockwell, and Aaron Douglas, delving into the realms of politics, labor, gender, and race. The images considered fulfilled national (and often personal) needs for pride, confidence, and hope during these tumultuous decades, and this project is the first to consider the hero in American art as a sustained modernist visual trope. -

FDR, as he was often called, led the United States through the Great Depression and World War II, and greatly expanding the powers of the federal government through a series of programs and reforms known as the New Deal. Stricken with polio in 1921, Roosevelt spent much of his adult life in a wheelchair. A whole generation of Americans grew up knowing no other president, as FDR served an unprecedented four terms in office. Roosevelt’s social programs reinvented the role of government in Americans' lives, while his presidency during World War II established the United States' leadership on the world stage. Fireside Chats On March 12, 1933, just eight days after first taking office, Roosevelt initiated his first of more than 30 fireside chats. Broadcast live on the radio from the White House, the earnest and accessible speeches were a powerful tactic to rally American support around FDR’s New Deal and World War II policies. FDR and the New Deal Within his first 100 days after taking office in March of 1933, Roosevelt called for a "New Deal" for Americans, proposing sweeping economic reforms to address the Great Depression. The greatest crisis in American history since the Civil War, 13 million Americans were unemployed and hundreds of banks were closed.
