Yoganandam Chhattisgarh College, Raipur C.G. Abstract: Holkar Dynasty was established by Malhar Rao on 29th July 1732. Holkar belonging to Maratha clan of Dhangar origin. The Maheshwar lies in the North bank of Narmada river valley and well known Ancient town of Mahismati region. It had been capital of Maratha State. The fort was built by Great Maratha Queen Rajmata Ahilya Devi Holkar and her named in 1767 AD. Rani Ahliya Devi was a prolific builder and patron of Hindu Temple, monuments, Palaces in Maheshwar and Indore and throughout the Indian territory pilgrimages. Ahliya Devi Holkar ruled on the Indore State of Malwa Region, and changed the capital to Maheshwar in Narmada river bank. The study indicates that the Narmada river flows from East to west in a straight course through / lineament zone. The Fort had been constructed on the right bank (North Wards) of River. Geologically, the region is occupied by Basaltic Deccan lava flow rocks of multiple layers, belonging to Cretaceous in age. The river Narmada flows between Northwards Vindhyan hillocks and southwards Satpura hills.

Forest Cover (Area-wise): Madhya Pradesh> Arunachal Pradesh> Chhattisgarh> Odisha> Maharashtra. Forest Cover (Percentage): Mizoram (85.4%)> Arunachal Pradesh (79.63%)> Meghalaya (76.33%) According to India State of Forest Report the recorded forest area of the state is 94,689 sq. km which is 30.72% of its geographical area. According to Indian state of forest Report (ISFR – 2019) the total forest cover in M.P. increased to 77,482.49 sq km which is 25.14% of the states geographical area. The forest area in MP is increased by 68.49 sq km. The first forest policy of Madhya Pradesh was made in 1952 and the second forest policy was made in 2005. Madhya Pradesh has a total of 925 forest villages of which 98 forest villages are deserted or located in national part and sanctuaries. MP is the first state to nationalise 100% of the forests. Among the districts, Balaghat has the densest forest cover, with 53.44 per cent of its area covered by forests. Ujjain (0.59 per cent) has the least forest cover among the districts In terms of forest canopy density classes: Very dense forest covers an area of 6676 sq km (2.17%) of the geograhical area. Moderately dense forest covers an area of 34, 341 sqkm (11.14% of geograhical area). Open forest covers an area of 36, 465 sq km (11.83% of geographical area) Madhya Pradesh has 0.06 sq km.

    2.0 HYDROGEOLOGY 2.1 Hydrometeorology The region experiences a tropical climate with wide variation in temperature. There are four seasons during the year. The summer season from March to Mid June, the monsoon season from Mid June to September, the post monsoon season in October- November, and the winter season from December to February, May is the hottest month, while January is the coldest. All the climatic parameters are shown in the Figure-2 The normal temperature varies between 8-120 C in winter to 420C in the peak summer. The maximum diurnal variation of temperature and humidity is during March. The maximum aerial variations in temperature also occur during this month. Monsoon rainfall is the main source of recharge to ground water and rainfall pattern has an important impact on groundwater levels in the phreatic aquifer. About 90% of the annual rainfall occurs during the south west monsoon periods from June to September. August is the wettest month. Most of the rainfall (more than 90%) occurs during the south-west monsoon season. The normal annual rainfall for the region is 1073 mm. The variation in normal annual rainfall is between 753.7 mm and 1427.7 mm. The rainfall decreases as we move from East to West and south to North. The highest normal annual rainfall occurs in Mandla district (1427.7 mm) followed by Annupur, Balaghat, and Dindori districts, which are in southern and south eastern parts of State whereas lowest normal annual rainfall is recorded in 753.7 mm in Morena district in the northern part of Madhya Pradesh.

The Malwa festival of Indore, Mandu and Ujjain and the dance festival of Khajuraho have a special contribution in keeping the folk-culture alive. Some Important Festivals :- Bhagauria festival- This festival of the Bhil tribe is celebrated on the occasion of Holi when the rabi crop is ripened. This festival starts seven days before Holika Dahan, mainly three festivals are celebrated in it. The first two days are followed by Gulaliya, then two days by Gol Gadedo festival and the last two days by Ujadia festival. This is also a festival of Bhagoria Bhils. Ghadalya festival :- In Ghadalya festival, the girls collectively dance together on the occasion of Navratri. This is the main festival of Malwa. In these, grains and money are collected in their area by placing a perforated pitcher on the head of a young woman and singing a song. Similar to Ghadalya festival, a festival called Chhala is also celebrated by unmarried youths. Karma Festivals :- Karma festivals are mainly celebrated by the people of Oraon tribe in the joy of coming to greenery. When the paddy is ready to be planted, the festival is celebrated and the Karma dance is performed. Suata festival :- Like the Ghadalya festival of Malwa, Suata festival is famous in Bundelkhand region. In this festival an ornate statue of the demon is installed on the wall and in the upper part of it, a statue of Shiva- Parvati is placed, the sun and moon are made on the wall, then the young women worship and sing.
