Huntington fundó la Hispanic Society of America para establecer un museo y una bliblioteca públicos y gratuitos con el fin de difundir la cultura de España y América Latina. Cuando la Sociedad abrió sus puertas al público en 1908, Huntington ya había adquirido y puesto en exposición una de las colecciones más importantes de cerámica española del mundo, incluyendo 60 piezas hispanomusulmanas de reflejo metálico, contando hoy día con 150 ejemplares. Continuando con la labor de completar la colección, la Sociedad adquirió otras piezas de cerámica española y mejicana pro- cedentes de alfares como Talavera de la Reina, Buen Retiro, Alcora, Puente del Arzobispo, Toledo, Sevilla, la ciudad de Méjico y Puebla. En este trabajo se dá una visión de la colección de cerámicas españolas y mejicanas que posee la Hispanic Society y de la historia de su adquisición. Además, se examiná la difusión e influencia de la cerámica española en la cerámica meji- cana y su posterior evolución. El estudio de las colecciones de la Hispanic Society constata que en este museo se encuentran los ejemplares más sobresalientes de porcelana y de mayólica de España y de Méjico. "Archer Milton Huntington and the Ceramics Collection at The Hispanic Society of America" Archer Milton Huntington founded The Hispanic Society of America with the objective of establishing a free museum and reference library for the study of the arts and culture of the Iberian Peninsula and Latin America. When the Society opened its doors to the public, Huntington had already acquired and placed on exhibition one of the most important collections of Spanish ceramics in the world, including sixty pieces of Hispano-Moresque lustreware, which today totals to one hundred- and-fifty examples. Today, the Society's collection of ceramics includes pieces from workshops in Andalucia, Manises, Muel, Cataluña, Talavera de la Reina, Puente de Arzobispo, Alcora, Buen Retiro, Toledo, Sevilla, Puebla snd Mexico City. This lecture provides an overview of the ceramics collection at the Hispanic Society and the history of its assemblage. In addition, the impact of the Spanish ceramic tradition in Mexico during the colonial period and its subsequent development will be examined. El plato en la colección (fig. 5) con motivos florales de tamaño grande se muestra una influencia de diseños islámicos más pequeños encontrado en las piezas que usaron dos siglos antes. Las piezas doradas más antiguas que tiene el museo, datan de la segunda mitad del siglo catorce. En la colección, hay unos azu- lejos octogonales para suelo que probablemente vienen de la sala de las dos hermanas en el palacio de la Alhambra. La pieza lleva el escudo Nazaríe, la última dinastía musulmana, con la inscrip- ción: “No hay más vencedor que Dios.” El azulejo en fig. 6 fue regalado a Huntington por Guillermo Joaquín de Osma, investi- gador y museólogo de Madrid. Osma fue amigo y asesor de Huntington y le ayudó con las investigaciones de su colección de cerámica española. Otra pieza de la Alhambra, es un cuello de uno de los famosos vasos altos con asas en forma de alas de los cuales quedan pocos ejemplos (Fig. 7). Alice Frothingham, la antigua conservadora de cerámica, compara el cuello con un grabado del siglo dieciocho que ilustra el vaso desaparecido que existía en el jardín de la Alhambra hasta mediados del siglo pasado.4 Es posible que el cuello sea un fragmento del vaso desaparecido porque Huntington adquirió esta pieza en una galería de París en 1913, y se dice que este vaso se rompió en el siglo pasado y un viajero francés sacó unos fragmentos fuera del país hace más de cien años.5 Fig. 2. This paper attempts to recognize this Islamic legacy through an analysis of three levels of the Hispano-American built envi- ronment: ornamentation, architectural form, and open space. Historical Background Beginning in 711, a succession of Islamic dynasties ruled the Iberian Peninsula, including the Umayyads (711-750), Abbasids (750-1082), Almoravids (1082-1147), Almohads (1147-1184), and the Nasrids (1184-1492), producing many of Islamic architecture's finest monu- ments: the Great Mosque of Cordoba (786-991), the rural palatial complex of Medinat az-Zahra (936), and the Alhambra (1238-1492). Not long after the Islamic Empire reached its northernmost expansion at the Pyrenees Mountains of Spain in the eighth century, Christian R. These different coloured glazes or glasses have in common to be produced by the presence of micro or nanoparticles embedded into the glaze which give their special optical effect. Chemical and microstructural analyses are performed using a selection of complementary Microscopic and Spectroscopic techniques that are the most adequate for the analyses of each decoration. Physical optical properties are also modeled and measured by means of UV-Vis spectroscopy. The composition and structure of the different phases formed during the processing of the decorations in historical times is obtained with the object to learn about their stability and processing conditions and to relate them to their optical properties.

    Islamic Art and Material Culture Subject Specialist Network 1. An Introduction to Islamic Ceramics: Lustre across Time Ceramics with metallic glazes imitating precious metal, known as lustreware, was a Middle Eastern invention. The technology was adapted from the lustre decoration used on Egyptian and Syrian glass in the eighth century (Fig. 1). It was first used on pottery produced in Iraq during the Abbasid dynasty in the ninth century. The earliest was pottery or fired earthenware covered in a white tin-glaze. This was a lead glaze to which a small amount of tin (imported from South East Asia or Europe) was added. The tin opacified the glaze, turning it white during a second firing. The result was a vessel with a superficial resemblance to Chinese porcelain. To make lustreware, potters painted the white glazed surface with a clay-like mixture containing powdered metallic oxides from silver and copper. This was placed in a partially oxygen starved or reducing atmosphere - a third firing - executed at a much lower temperature (about 500-600°C). The heat leads to the formation of microscopic metal particles which remain imbedded on the surface, this is then burnished or rubbed to bring out the lustrous reflective painting. The knowledge of this costly technique used on elite ceramic ware was probably spread by the movement of potters throughout the Middle East; when one centre declined, another became more prosperous, attracting artisans looking for new patronage. From Iraq the technology spread to Egypt, in Fustat (old Cairo), where it was used to decorate fritware (also called stonepaste), an artificial ceramic body developed by Middle Eastern potters around the middle of the 11th century.
