In a valuable historical note at the end of the book the author quotes her sources and outlines where she has changed history in order to involve her young characters in a daring escape that did not occur. I don't usually enjoy reading non-fiction stories but i definitely found the Chinese culture interesting. But things turn worse at home. Mar 08, Sophia Cha rated it it was amazing. She headed home scared that Niang might abuse her. This book is a historical novel and so there is a Historical Note at the end of the book, which I would recommend reading first. Now, for the parts of the story I thought Mah could have improved on. Shelves: must-read. Denied love from her parents, she finds some solace in relationships with her grandfather Ye Ye and her Aunt Baba, but they are taken from her as Niang deems them to exert bad influence on the children. The dragon society is partly a boarding school to help orphans, and those orphans are taught martial arts, kung Fu, inner strength, and friendship. Error rating book. The author tells the story from her point of view and gives a realistic account of her terrible childhood with historical insight. My favourite part is when Grandma Wu and CC are doing the tea ceremony and the whole cockroach thing is very wise in my opinion. One of the key plot ideas for this book is independence. They haven't gotten married yet, but Ye Xian is still told to call her "Niang", the Chinese term for "mother". The fantasy parts. Ye Xian is visited by an ancestor, who tells her if she buries the fish’s bones in four pots and puts them under the four corners of her bed, they can make her wishes come true. She attends a New Year’s celebration, where she leaves behind her magical slipper. The King of the To’Han islets stumbles upon the slipper and vows to marry the person who has a foot small enough to fit the slipper. He creates a pavilion and puts the slipper on display. Ye Xian tries to retrieve it but is mistaken for a criminal and is brought before the King. She tells him of the unfortunate details of her life, and he allows her to return home. Later, the King seeks her at her home and invites her to be his Queen. Rhodopis (Egypt) Rhodopis is a Greek servant at the Pharaoh’s palace, where the other servants treat her cruelly. One day, the Pharaoh stumbles upon Rhodopis dancing by herself and commends her by demanding a gift for her: rose-gilded slippers. While drying her slippers, a falcon steals one and carries it all the way to the lap of the Pharaoh. The Pharaoh marvels at the slipper but does not recognize it as the same gift he demanded for Rhodopis.

We strive to help students find and explore their own, unique voices. Cinderella is a great way for students to experience opera. The beautiful storyline and colorful production makes this a great opera for all ages. Throughout the program, students will be introduced to musical concepts including basic voice types found in classical music, diverse musical structures, and operatic terminology. Additionally, they will learn skills such as evaluating content and how language functions in differing contexts.
