The Polish railways are currently facing huge changes aimed at increasing their competi- tiveness and building a strong market position. We have at our disposal the largest source of EU funds in history for investments in this transport sector. Through the modernization of railway lines, the purchase of new rolling stock and the renovation of railway station buildings, we want the railways to be even more friendly to passengers, more modern and safer. Improving travel comfort, shortening travel times, restoring the rolling stock park and adapting it to the needs of people with disabilities are our priorities. In this brochure you will find the basic facts about the railway infrastructure in our country. Photo. MIC The most important investments regarding the lines and railway stations have been dis- cussed. Equally important topics include i.a. the issues of passenger and freight transport as well as the development of intermodal transport. I am convinced that as a result of the actions undertaken, Polish railways will become a means of transport, which will be even more eagerly chosen by passengers and business clients. Moreover, after many years, the railways have a real opportunity to successfully compete with road transport and thus can play a much greater role in the economic devel- opment of the country. Yours sincerely, Andrzej Adamczyk MINISTER OF INFRASTRUCTURE AND CONSTRUCTION 6 THE RAILWAYS TODAY Railway infrastructure in Poland Due to geographical location, the railway network in Poland plays an important role in the transit of people and goods in Europe. At the same time, it is the place where the 1435 mm European standard gauge network meets the 1520 mm wide gauge network.
