Mexican American Roots Music with a Vibrant, Contemporary Attitude Mexican American roots music with a vibrant, contemporary attitude Los Cenzontles (Nahuatl for “The Mockingbirds”) dig deep into cultural traditions, creating a vibrant, con- temporary sound infused with the gutsy soul of Mexi- co’s rural roots. Los Cenzontles (senn-SONT-less) have produced 19 albums with their 20th, Regeneration, re- leased with critical acclaim this past fall. The band has performed across the U.S., in Europe, the Dominican Republic, and throughout Mexico; they have collaborat- ed with artists including The Chieftains, Los Lobos, Los Tigres del Norte, Linda Ronstadt, Ry Cooder, David Hi- dalgo and Taj Mahal, among others. The group's core members also operate Los Cenzontles Mexican Arts Center in San Pablo, California. The nonprofit has been training Bay Area youth in traditional Mexican music, dance, and art since 1994. Los Cenzontles "both honors and upends traditional Mexican music, tapping deep roots as it flow- ers into something completely new, and distinctly American." — New York Times "Los Cenzontles’ gutsy rhythms and delightful voices reinvigorated my love of Mexican music." — Linda Ronstadt “Meeting Los Cenzontles was just like meeting a medieval clan of wonderful musicians from the West Coast of Ireland. The fusion of their music with ours was something that just had to happen. It was inevitable.” — Paddy Moloney, The Chieftains For more reviews and press materials, visit www.loscenzontles.com/band. • Irish Bands of the 60S & 70S | Sample Answer
Irish Bands of the 60s & 70s | Sample answer Ceoltóiri Cualann was an Irish group formed by Sean O’Riada in 1961. O’Riada had the idea of forming Ceoltóiri Cualann following the success of a group he had put together to perform music for the play “The Song of the Anvil” in 1960. Ceoltóiri Cualann would be a group to play Irish traditional songs with accompaniment and traditional dance tunes and slow airs. All folk music recorded before that time had been highly orchestrated and done in a classical way. Another aim of O’Riada’s was to revitalise the work of harpist and composer Turlough O’Carolan. Ceoltóiri Cualann was launched during a festival in Dublin in 1960 at an event called Recaireacht an Riadaigh and was an immediate success in Dublin. The group mainly played the music of O’Carolan, sean nós style songs and Irish traditional tunes, and O’Riada introduced the bodhrán as a percussion instrument. Ceoltóiri Cualann had ceased playing with any regularity by 1969 but reunited to record “O’Riada” and “O’Riada Sa Gaiety” that year. “O’Riada Sa Gaiety” was not released until after O’Riada’s death in 1971. The members of Ceoltóiri Cualann, some of whom went on to form “The Chieftains” in 1963 were O’Riada (harpsichord and bodhrán), Martin Fay, John Kelly (both fiddle), Paddy Moloney (uilleann pipes), Michael Turbidy (flute), Sonny Brogan, Éamon de Buitléir (both accordian), Ronnie Mc Shane (bones), Peadar Mercer (bodhrán), Seán Ó Sé (tenor voice) and Darach Ó Cathain (sean nós singer. Some examples of their tunes are “O’ Carolan’s Concerto” and “Planxty Irwin”.

  • Old-Style Mariachi Music Cascades out of Gritty Strip Mall to Infuse New Generations - Joel Selvin, Chronicle Senior Pop Music Critic Thursday, October 5, 2006
Old-style mariachi music cascades out of gritty strip mall to infuse new generations - Joel Selvin, Chronicle Senior Pop Music Critic Thursday, October 5, 2006 In a small strip mall in the East Bay near the end of San Pablo Avenue, Los Cenzontles Mexican Arts Center sits between a run-down coin laundry and a Smart & Final discount store, a few blocks from the Richmond/San Pablo city line. Nearby are some of the toughest neighborhoods in California, 24/7 drug dealing on every corner, death and violence at hand every day. More than 200 students traipse through the remodeled liquor store each week to take music lessons in this hardscrabble part of town, blowing gently on the glowing ember of their culture that Los Cenzontles director Eugene Rodriguez is keeping alive. "We are playing the old-style mariachi music," he says, "something very few people have any value for." Rodriguez and the people at Los Cenzontles are working hard to preserve traditional Mexican music, teaching their grandparents' songs and dances to a new generation. In the trophy case in the center's light, airy main room are a photo of first lady Laura Bush giving Los Cenzontles an award, some of the 15 CDs the center has recorded with its touring company and photos of Los Lobos and Linda Ronstadt meeting with the students. Leather chairs and a couch that one student's parents dropped off on their way to the dump make a little living room at the end of the recital hall, lovingly built by more parents, many who work in the building trades.
