THE TRADITION OF DAYS OF THE DEAD Días de los Muertos is the annual Mexican and Central American observance of the Catholic feasts of All Saints’ and All Souls’ Day on November 1 and 2. Although the intent of this celebration is to establish communion with departed loved ones, the rituals that accomplish this are varied and incorporate elements of pre-Hispanic beliefs and practices and Spanish Catholic ritual. It is a time of family reunion, not only for the living but also for the dead, who for a few brief hours are believed to return to be with their living relatives. Altars with offerings of food, candy, toys, candles, flowers, and incense are set up in the home for the returning spirits. Graves in the cemetery are cleaned and decorated with flowers in preparation for an all-night vigil. By sharing in these family and communal rituals, grief is appeased, relationships are reinforced, and life is celebrated. LA TRADICIÓN DE LOS DÍAS DE LOS MUERTOS Los Días de los Muertos es la práctica anual que realizan mexicanos y centroamericanos en las festividades católicas del Día de Todos los Santos y el Día de Todos los Muertos, el 1° y 2 de noviembre. Aunque el propósito de esta celebración siempre es establecer una comunión con los seres queridos que han partido, los rituales en que se basa son variados e incorporan elementos de creencias y prácticas prehispánicas y del ritual católico español. Son días de reunión familiar, no solo para los vivos sino también para los muertos, ya que la creencia dice que regresan por unas horas para estar con sus parientes vivos. En las casas se construyen altares con ofrendas de comida, dulces, juguetes, velas, flores e incienso para los espíritus que regresan. En los cementerios se limpian las tumbas y se las decora con flores como preparación para una larga vigilia toda la noche. Al compartir estos rituales familiares y comunitarios, el dolor se mitiga, las relaciones se refuerzan y se celebra la vida. THE OFRENDAS (OFFERING ALTARS) To welcome the arrival of the dead and to honor their contributions while they were alive, families erect ofrendas in homes and over graves as ephemeral artistic presentations of food offerings, family mementos, and folk decoration. These are prepared and exhibited with feelings of gratitude, love, and veneration. In keeping with this tradition, an ofrenda of the four cardinal points has been placed in the Museum Garden near the stage. The dedication of the four small cardinal points ofrendas initiates the ritual use of the altars as repositories for the community’s memorial cards and flowers.

    Old-style mariachi music cascades out of gritty strip mall to infuse new generations - Joel Selvin, Chronicle Senior Pop Music Critic Thursday, October 5, 2006 In a small strip mall in the East Bay near the end of San Pablo Avenue, Los Cenzontles Mexican Arts Center sits between a run-down coin laundry and a Smart & Final discount store, a few blocks from the Richmond/San Pablo city line. Nearby are some of the toughest neighborhoods in California, 24/7 drug dealing on every corner, death and violence at hand every day. More than 200 students traipse through the remodeled liquor store each week to take music lessons in this hardscrabble part of town, blowing gently on the glowing ember of their culture that Los Cenzontles director Eugene Rodriguez is keeping alive. "We are playing the old-style mariachi music," he says, "something very few people have any value for." Rodriguez and the people at Los Cenzontles are working hard to preserve traditional Mexican music, teaching their grandparents' songs and dances to a new generation. In the trophy case in the center's light, airy main room are a photo of first lady Laura Bush giving Los Cenzontles an award, some of the 15 CDs the center has recorded with its touring company and photos of Los Lobos and Linda Ronstadt meeting with the students. Leather chairs and a couch that one student's parents dropped off on their way to the dump make a little living room at the end of the recital hall, lovingly built by more parents, many who work in the building trades.

In 2022 he will present a boldly varied SF Symphony subscription program of works by Carlos Simon, Price, Brahms, and Franck—a concert that was originally to have taken place in April 2020 and was canceled due to COVID-19. From a young age, Canadian conductor Daniel Bartholomew-Poyser turned to orchestral music to bring light, beauty, and healing to his personal and professional life. Currently Artist-in-Residence and Community Ambassador at Symphony Nova Scotia, he is also on the Board of Orchestras Canada, where he serves as chair of the Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Accessibility Committee.     July 2018 Under the Freedom of Information Act, agencies are required to proactively disclose frequently requested records. Often the National Endowment for the Arts receives requests for examples of funded grant proposals for various disciplines. In response, the NEA is providing examples of the “Project Information” also called the ”narrative” for four successful Folk & Traditional Arts and three Folk Arts Partnerships projects that received NEA funding.
